Research shows that there is a strong relationship between mothers who respond promptly and contingently to their child and cognitive and social development. The effect of maternal responsiveness relies on the child's ability to elicit guidance as she acquires more sophisticated competencies. Further, children reared in home environments rich in literary exposure and shared-reading experiences are competent in a range of developmental outcomes. Of interest in the present study was the relation between maternal responsiveness and the home literacy environment (HLE) and preschool outcomes. More specifically, this longitudinal study investigates maternal responsiveness and the HLE in the second and fourth year of life as they relate to school-readiness and language development. Data were collected from 29 parent-child dyads (children's ages ranging from 4 years, 3 months to 5 years, 11 months) and compared with archival data from children's previous laboratory visits. Maternal responsiveness and child language complexity and diversity was assessed through a 10-minute observation of free toy play. The Home Literacy Environment (HLE) was assessed through parent report on the HLE Questionnaire (HLEQ). Language proficiency was evaluated from the following measures: language complexity, measured by mean length of utterance in morphemes; language diversity, measured by number of different word roots used in the first 50 utterances, and narrative complexity. Finally, school readiness was assessed by The Lollipop Test: A Diagnostic Screening Test of School Readiness. It was predicted that the HLE would be stable over time, and that the HLE and maternal responsiveness would be associated with language proficiency and school readiness. As predicted, the HLE was stable overtime. Surprisingly, the HLEQ did not predict school readiness or language outcomes. Maternal responses that guided conversation were negatively associated with school readiness, language diversity, and narrative complexity. However, maternal responses that asked more conceptual questions, tested the child's knowledge, classified objects into categories, discussed beliefs and needs of others, and answered the child's questions were significantly related to higher language diversity and language complexity scores. In addition, an indirect relationship between maternal responsiveness and school readiness was found; fostered by language diversity and narrative complexity. Directions for future research include exploring the multidimensionality of maternal responsiveness at different milestones as well as confirming the current results using a larger sample.

Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

The purpose of this study was to examine if the home literacy environment for preschool-aged children is a predictor for letter identification scores. The current research examined parent/care giver responses to the Get Ready to Read Home Literacy Environment checklist and students' scores on the curriculum-based measure for letter identification. This investigation examined parent/care giver responses to the Get Ready to Read Home Literacy Environment checklist and student scores on the curriculum-based letter identification measure. The participants included 83 preschool-aged children in an urban Southern Arizona school district. The students attended an inclusive school district preschool program; therefore, both students with and without disabilities were included in the sample. The findings of the study suggested a significant relationship between home literacy environment and letter identification scores for preschool-aged children.

Led by UNESCO, the World Bank, the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution and UNICEF, the initiative aims to promote feasible, accurate and useful measurement of childrenâs development and learning at the start of primary school, and of the quality of their pre-primary learning environments. Items are designed for children between the ages of 4 and 6 years. Following the premise that many existing tools include similar items, the leading organizationsâ core team worked with a consortium of experts, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and multilaterals to build upon current measurement tools to create a common set of items organized into modules for measuring: 1) early childhood development and learning, and 2) the quality of pre-primary learning environments. The MELQO core team and experts also collaborated to outline a process for context-specific adaptation of the measurement modules resulting from lessons learned from field-testing in several countries in 2015 and 2016. The modules are designed to be implemented at scale, with an emphasis on feasibility for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Book excerpt: The current study examined relationships between the home literacy environment (HLE), classroom literacy environment (CLE), and emergent literacy skills for young children from low socioeconomic, linguistically diverse backgrounds (N = 1043). Parents and teachers completed surveys, and specialists administered language assessments to children. Language groups included "English," "Spanish," "English and Spanish," and "English and Other." Results indicated that, within the HLE, reading frequency was lower for the "English and Other" group, however recitation of poems was higher for this group. Availability of literacy materials and reading frequency were positively related to children's book knowledge. This pattern held for children 3 years and older, but not for those under 3. For those 3 years and up, reading frequency was positively related to auditory comprehension. For those under 3, number of literacy materials was positively related to language skills. For native English-speakers, reading frequency and expressivecommunication were negatively related, while they were positively related for Spanish speakers. For English and Spanish speakers, number of literacy materials was positively related to auditory comprehension and book knowledge. Within the classroom, whole and small group reading were occurring less often than desired. CLE quality was negatively related to expressive communication, while it was positively related to book knowledge. Cluster analyses revealed that classrooms clustered into two groups, and children 3 years and older in the higher-quality cluster scored higher on language naming, auditory comprehension, expressive communication, book knowledge, and book interest than those in the lower-quality cluster. Though child gender and the HLE accounted for significant variance in early literacy skills, the CLE only had an effect beyond this for expressive communication skills. It also did not moderate the effects of the HLE. Future research should focus on the gap between the HLE and CLE, especially for children from low-income, linguistically diverse families.
