Book The Relationship Between Vocational Rehabilitation Services Demographic Variables and Outcomes Among Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities

Bromet and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the types of vocational rehabilitation services provided to individuals with psychiatric disabilities through the federal-state vocational rehabilitation program and the relationship of these services to employment outcome. With the cooperation and support of the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA), the data for this study consisted of consumers with psychiatric disabilities who received services during federal fiscal year 2002 (n = 79,967). In addition, this study evaluated and described the demographic variables that were involved in successful employment outcome such as gender, race/ethnicity, age, diagnosis, significant disability, years of education, and disability benefits. To ensure that the regression model had both generalizability and transferability to the population and situations for which it was intended, model validation was accomplished by splitting the sample approximately in half, resulting in a top (n = 40,000) and bottom sample (n = 39,967). Correlational analyses and chi-square analyses were used to assess the bivariate relationship between the dependent variables (program closure status) and each of the predictor variables to identify high intercorrelations and assist in determining which variables were entered into the logistic regression model. The best fit model was identified and interpreted based on the top and bottom halves of data. Neither race/ethnicity nor gender were predictors of employment outcome and after being force entered into the initial logistic regression model, race/ethnicity was dropped in the final model. However, job placement services, on-the-job services, job search assistance and other support services were somewhat predictive of a positive employment outcome for individuals with psychiatric disabilities. This may be due in part to the use of these services as a conduit toward achieving competitive employment, thus consumers receiving such services would be closer to achieving employment. In contrast, recipients of disability benefits, most especially individuals receiving SSI and SSDI, were the least likely to have an employment outcome after receiving services. Likewise, significant disability was also associated with fewer closures with employment outcomes. Many of the results of this study mirrored the existing literature on individuals with psychiatric disabilities, suggesting that additional research is needed to clarify the conflicting results of many studies. Model limitations and recommendations for further research are suggested.

Book Models that Predict Competitive Employment Outcomes in the United States Federal State Vocational Rehabilitation Program for Clients who are Blind and Clients with Other Disabilities

Download or read book Models that Predict Competitive Employment Outcomes in the United States Federal State Vocational Rehabilitation Program for Clients who are Blind and Clients with Other Disabilities written by Paula R. Warren-Peace and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of clients in the Federal/State Vocational Rehabilitation program (VR) have been successful in achieving competitive employment in recent years. However, one disability group - clients who are legally blind - has traditionally lagged and currently lags behind in obtaining similar proportions of competitive employment outcomes as their counterparts in the VR system. In this study, the 2007 RSA 911 data were used to explore potential explanations for the discrepancy between outcomes for clients who are legally blind and clients with other disabilities. Similar to previous studies, frequency analyses confirmed that clients who are legally blind are far less likely to obtain a competitive employment outcome in the VR program. Although the most recent data reveals that 62.4% of clients who are legally blind attained a competitive outcome in 2007, 96.6% of clients with other disabilities achieved the same outcome. Backwards stepwise logistic regression generated two models yielding likelihoods of competitive employment for people who are blind and people with other disabilities, respectively. The model that predicts competitive closure for clients who are blind was generally similar to the model that predicts competitive closure for clients with other disabilities. Most of the service variables that predicted competitive outcomes for clients with other disabilities also predicted competitive outcomes for clients who are legally blind. However, the rates with which clients who are legally blind received these services were lower when compared to clients with other disabilities. One difference between the two models was that the variables predictive of competitive employment in both models often had larger odds ratios for clients who are legally blind. The models generated in this study will hopefully provide VR professionals with information that will contribute to helping clients who are legally blind achieve higher percentages of competitive employment outcomes.

Book Individual Placement and Support

Download or read book Individual Placement and Support written by Robert E. Drake and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employment is the highest priority for many people with severe mental illness and it is a central aspect of recovery. Over the past two decades, the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model of supported employment has emerged as the prominent evidence-based approach to vocational rehabilitation. This comprehensive monograph synthesizes the research and experience on IPS supported employment: historical context, core principles, effectiveness, long-term outcomes, non-vocational outcomes, cost-effectiveness, generalizability, fidelity, implementation, policy, and future research. A collaboration of the top researchers in the area, this book will have broad appeal to professionals and researchers working with populations with psychiatric disabilities and in community mental health and social service settings. In tracing the evolution of IPS, readers are equipped with an elegant example of the transition from needs assessment, to model development, to testing, and to dissemination.

Book Predictors of Starting Wage for Individuals with Schizophrenia Successfully Employed After Receiving State federal Vocational Rehabilitation Services

Download or read book Predictors of Starting Wage for Individuals with Schizophrenia Successfully Employed After Receiving State federal Vocational Rehabilitation Services written by Ashley Ann Kaseroff and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess which state-federal vocational rehabilitation (VR) services were capable of advancing an already successful employment outcome to a potentially financially meaningful outcome for the consumer with schizophrenia. This study examined demographic, state-federal VR services, and supported employment fidelity predictors of starting wages for consumers with schizophrenia in supported employment and not in supported employment. Sample: A total of 4,318 state-federal VR consumers with schizophrenia who were closed with a successful employment outcome were selected from the Rehabilitation Service Administration (RSA) 911 database for the year 2014. Cases were divided into two groups: consumers receiving supported employment (n=1,106) and consumers who were not receiving supported employment (n = 3,213). Methodology: A hierarchical regression analysis (HRA) was conducted on each group to determine which demographic and state-federal VR services predicted starting wage, and to see if receiving services in a state promoting high-fidelity supported employment (i.e. Individual Placement and Support, IPS) predicted higher wages after controlling for demographic and service variables. Results: The final HRA model for the supported employment group showed demographics and state-federal VR services explained 11.9% of the variance in starting wages, while all three factors explained 9.2% of the variance in starting wages for the non-supported employment group. Receiving services in an IPS promoting state was not a significant predictor for consumers with schizophrenia in supported employment. Results indicated that state-federal VR consumers with schizophrenia who were African American/black, younger, not receiving cash benefits from the social security administration, and engaged in post-secondary education were predicted to have higher starting wages regardless of participation in supported or non-supported employment. If not receiving supported employment programming, then being Hispanic or Latinx was also associated with higher starting wage. Significant state-federal VR service variables predicting higher starting wage included transportation for both groups, and maintenance and diagnosis and treatment of impairment for the supported employment group. Some services significantly predicting lower starting wages were most likely a function of symptom severity. Implications for rehabilitation counselors, and future directions for both researchers and state-federal VR policy-makers are discussed.

Book Demographic and Service Variables as Predictors of State federal Vocational Rehabilitation System Competitive Employment Outcomes Among Consumers with Traumatic Brain Injury

Download or read book Demographic and Service Variables as Predictors of State federal Vocational Rehabilitation System Competitive Employment Outcomes Among Consumers with Traumatic Brain Injury written by Paola Premuda-Conti and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state-federal vocational rehabilitation system helps people with disabilities obtain and maintain employment in their communities. Although some people with traumatic brain injury return to work with minor adjustments, high proportions do not return to former employment or find work after their injuries. This study examined the association of types and degree of limitations to functional capacities, and competitive employment outcomes; and selected VR services, and competitive employment, after controlling for demographic variables. The degree of limitation across all areas of functional capacity, used by VR counselors to determine severity of disability and priority for services, were not found to be significantly related to competitive employment among customers with TBI.

Book The Effects of Race ethnicity Comorbid Disabilities and Vocational Rehabilitation Services on Employment Outcomes of Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury

Download or read book The Effects of Race ethnicity Comorbid Disabilities and Vocational Rehabilitation Services on Employment Outcomes of Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury written by Zaccheus James Ahonle and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuals with TBI are among the fastest growing population served in the state – federal vocational rehabilitation programs. The increasing rates of individuals with TBI accessing VR programs and the higher rates of unemployment among this population have been reported in the literature. Using the Rehabilitation Services Administration National Case Services Report (RSA-911) fiscal year (FY) 2012, this study examined the predictors of employment outcomes. In order to determine the effective VR services across groups, the moderating effects of race/ethnicity, comorbid disabilities on the effects of VR services on employment outcomes of individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) were also examined. A logistic regression was run and results showed a significant disparity in the rate of successful employment outcomes of individuals who are White versus those individuals from racially/ethnically diverse backgrounds, especially Blacks. After controlling for demographic characteristics, on-the-job support, job placement, and on-the-job training emerged as the most important positive set of VR services predictors of successful employment outcome, regardless of race/ethnicity. Maintenance, assistive technology, and job search assistance emerged as the second set of positive predictors. Diagnosis and treatment service was significantly negatively related to employment outcome, regardless of the race/ethnicity of the individual with TBI. College training and assessment services were found to significantly increase the odds of being successfully employed for Blacks compared to the odds of being successfully employed for individuals who are White. Transportation and supported employment services significantly increased the odds of being successfully employed for individuals from ‘Other’ ethnic minority groups (i.e., American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islanders) compared to the odds of being successfully employed for those individuals who are White. VR Service variables were stronger predictors of successful employment than demographic variables and pre-employment status as application. Depression was negatively related to successful employment outcome, but did not moderate the effect of VR services on employment outcome. Limitations, implications, and directions for future studies are also discussed.

Download or read book Patterns of Service Delivery to Transition age Vocational Rehabilitation Consumers with Psychiatric Disabilities written by Paige N. Dunlap and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With psychiatric disabilities representing a large number of transition-age youth in the US and low employment rates for individuals with disabilities in general, it is necessary to identify the patterns of service variables that are more likely to lead to a competitive employment outcome for this population. This study was an investigation of the vocational rehabilitation case service variables provided through the federal-state vocational rehabilitation system to transition-age consumers with psychiatric disabilities. The identified variables were then studied to determine relationships that exist as they pertain to employment outcomes.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between demographic covariates and vocational rehabilitation (VR) services, on employment outcomes among consumers of state-federal VR with schizophrenia who received Social Security Administration (SSA) benefits. This study employed a secondary data analysis of the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) 911 data for the fiscal year 2009. There were 10,477 closed cases that met the criteria for the study. Hierarchical logistic regression was conducted to identify predictors of employment outcomes (i.e., successful vs. unsuccessful). Results indicated, of the 10,477 consumers with schizophrenia, receipt of SSA cash benefits was a substantial predictor of unsuccessful outcomes and had an inverse relationship with employment. Among the 10 variables with the highest odds ratios, only four were VR service variables: job placement (OR = 2.513; 95% CI: 2.270 - 2.738), on-the-job-supports (OR = 2.166; 95% CI: 1.951 - 2.405), maintenance (OR = 1.299; 95% CI: 1.148 - 1.469), and VR counseling and guidance (OR = 1.201; 95% CI: 1.079 - 1.336). Of the four service variables that had a significant relationship with employment, Job placement related activities were the most significant, followed by on the job supports, and VR counseling and guidance.
