Book PRECIPITATE FREE ZONES AND STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IN A TERNARY Al Zn Mg ALLOY

Download or read book PRECIPITATE FREE ZONES AND STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IN A TERNARY Al Zn Mg ALLOY written by A. J. Sedriks and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made of the role of the precipitate-free zone (PFZ) in the stress-corrosion cracking of a ternary Al-5.3 w/o Zn-2.5 w/o Mg alloy in aqueous chloride solutions. For alloys heat treated to give the same hardness (140 D.P.N.), susceptibility was found to depend on the width of the PFZ (in the range 0.04-0.35 microns), both the time to initiate and to propagate stress-corrosion cracks decreasing significantly with decreasing PFZ width. Application of small anodic currents (e.g. 0.2 mA/sq cm) reduced failure times by about two orders of magnitude, while cathodic currents inhibited failure. Fractographic studies indicated that the mode of stress-corrosion failure differs from that obtained in normal tensile fracture; no evidence for discontinuous crack propagation was found. These and other observations are discussed in terms of the proposed mechanisms of stress-corrosion cracking, and shown to be consistent with a mechanism involving localized anodic dissolution of plastically deforming solid solution within the PFZ. Book Observations on the Stress Corrosion Cracking of an Al 5 Zn 2 5 MG Ternary and Various Quarternary Alloys

Download or read book Observations on the Stress Corrosion Cracking of an Al 5 Zn 2 5 MG Ternary and Various Quarternary Alloys written by J. A. S. Green and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies were undertaken to test a concept of controlling stress-corrosion crack propagation in Al-Zn-Mg alloys through the use of minor alloying additions of elements known to retard hydrogen ion recombination such as Cd, As, Zr and Cr. Results indicated that the concept was invalid since the minor alloying additions themselves exerted a more profound influence on the grain boundary microstructure. Specifically, the microstructural features of grain boundary particle size and interparticle spacing were found to correlate with stress corrosion susceptibility. Auger electron spectroscope studies also revealed a correlation between the concentration of Zn and Mg within the precipitate-free zone and the susceptibility to cracking. Book Stress Corrosion Cracking of Al Zn Mg Alloys The Corrosion Behavior of Grain Boundary Constituents

Download or read book Stress Corrosion Cracking of Al Zn Mg Alloys The Corrosion Behavior of Grain Boundary Constituents written by A. J. Sedriks and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the grain-boundary constituents in Al-Zn-Mg alloys are generally too fine for their corrosion behavior to be studied in situ, an experimental approach involving simulation was adopted. This involved the examination of the corrosion behavior of a small ingot of MgZn2, the Al-Zn-Mg alloy in the as-quenched state, and pure aluminum. The pure aluminum and the as-quenched alloy were considered to represent the two limiting cases of the material comprising the precipitate-free zone; pure aluminum representing the limiting case of the solute-depleted region and the as-quenched alloy the vacancy depleted region. Book Advances in Corrosion Science and Technology

Download or read book Advances in Corrosion Science and Technology written by M. G. Fontana and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series was organized to provide a forum for review papers in the area of corrosion. The aim of these reviews is to bring certain areas of corrosion science and technology into a sharp focus. The volumes of this series are published approximately on a yearly basis and each contains three to five reviews. The articles in each volume are sekcted in such a way as to be of interest both to the corrosion scientists and the corrosion technologists. There is, in fact, a particular aim in juxtaposing these interests because of the importance of mutual interaction and interdisciplinarity so important in corrosion studies. It is hoped that the corrosion scientists in this way may stay abreast of the activities in corrosion technology and vice versa. In this series the term "corrosion" is used in its very broadest sense. It includes, therefore, not only the degradation of metals in aqueous en vironment but also what is commonly referred to as "high-temperature oxidation." Further, the plan is to be even more general than these topics; the series will include all solids and all environments. Today, engineering solids include not only metals but glasses, ionic solids, polymeric solids, and composites of these. Environments of interest must be extended to liquid metals, a wide variety of gases, nonaqueous electrolytes, and other non aqueous liquids.

Book Grain Boundary Segregation in Al Zn Mg Alloys Implications to Stress Corrosion Cracking

Download or read book Grain Boundary Segregation in Al Zn Mg Alloys Implications to Stress Corrosion Cracking written by R. K. Viswanadham and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior studies on grain boundary segregation in Al-Zn-Mg have shown that free Mg is present along the grain boundaries in these alloys under all heat-treat conditions. In this paper, further studies on grain boundary segregation in Al-Zn-Mg alloys are outlined. A physical basis for the observed segregation profiles is provided through the vacancy pump model developed by Anthony. The implications of the observed segregation to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and other environmentally-induced embrittling phenomena (where hydrogen could possibly play a dominant role) are discussed in terms of a possible Mg-H complex formation. A wide body of circumstantial evidence from several areas for such an interaction is provided. The dependence of this segregation on boundary type is explored and texture control is proposed as a possible means of controlling segregation and enhancing resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Book Grain Boundary Segregation and Stress Corrosion Cracking of Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Grain Boundary Segregation and Stress Corrosion Cracking of Aluminum Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auger electron spectroscopy and chemical depth profiling by argon sputtering were employed to obtain the grain boundary segregation profiles of various aluminum alloys. Samples of both commercial (7075, 7050, and 7049) and high purity alloys based on the Al-Zn-Mg ternary in different heat treatments were examined following in situ fracturing in the spectrometer. Segregation profiles indicate that the grain boundaries in these alloys are considerably enriched in Mg and Zn. In commercial alloys, however, the grain boundaries are depleted in the minor elements Fe, Cu and Si. AES spectra of oxide films formed on Al-Zn-Mg alloys indicate that the enhanced segregation along the grain boundaries results in a film rich in Mg. It is postulated that incorporation of extensive amounts of these alloying elements into the film renders it less protective and leads to enhanced hydrogen entry and embrittlement by stress corrosion cracking.
