Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I looked up, I was startled by a vision that invaded all of my view. From out of the sun, I watched a line of people walking across the sky toward me. They were covered with sunlight and seemed to be of the sunlight. The first person to appear from within the sunlight was a man. Following behind him was a woman who had a large load in her arms as she walked. The person to follow her was a greater Man. He held an even greater load in His arms. As I looked at this third person, The Lord spoke into my heart and said, "You are carrying a load, but while you carry this load, I will carry you. You are pregnant. Now go and carry Isabella to her parents." Following that man from within the sun, many people were walking. Some of them held things like instruments, and some held tools and equipment while marching. And in this large group, there were others who seemed to be dancing while following in this great formation. The vision came to an end, and I became aware of myself lying on my sheet again. I was in awe at what I had seen and began thinking about what The Lord had spoken to my heart, as I was absolutely sure of His communication with me in that moment. Though every piece of the vision was yet to be interpreted to me, I knew I was pregnant, and I was sure that that baby girl growing inside of me was to be named Isabella.

Download or read book We Will Be Free written by Nancy Koester and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sojourner Truth’s powerful voice calls to us through this evocative narrative of faith in action—and her words are more relevant than ever. Though born into slavery, Sojourner Truth would defy the limits placed upon her as a Black woman to become one of the nineteenth century’s most renowned female preachers and civil rights advocates. In We Will Be Free, Nancy Koester chronicles her spiritual journey as an enslaved woman, a working mother, and an itinerant preacher and activist. On Pentecost in 1827, the course of Sojourner Truth’s life was changed forever when she had a vision of Jesus calling her to preach. Though women could not be trained as ministers at the time, her persuasive speaking, powerful singing, and quick wit converted many to her social causes. During the Civil War, Truth campaigned for the Union to abolish slavery throughout the United States, and she personally recruited Black troops for the effort. Her activism carried her to Washington, DC, where she met Abraham Lincoln and ministered to refugees of Southern slavery. Truth’s faith-driven action continued throughout Reconstruction, as she aided freed people, campaigned for reparations, advocated for women’s rights, and defied segregation on public transportation. Sojourner Truth’s powerful voice once echoed in the streets of Washington and New York. Her passion rings out again in Nancy Koester’s vivid writing. As the legacy of slavery and segregation still looms over the United States today, students of American history, Christians, and all interested readers will find inspiration and illumination in Truth’s story.

Download or read book Isabella of Castile written by Giles Tremlett and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1474, a twenty-three year old woman ascended the throne of Castile, the largest and strongest kingdom in Spain. Ahead of her lay the considerable challenge not only of being a young, female ruler in an overwhelmingly male-dominated world, but also of reforming a major European kingdom that was riddled with crime, corruption, and violent political factionism. Her marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon was crucial to her success, bringing together as it did two kingdoms, but it was a royal partnership in which Isabella more than held her own. Her pivotal reign was long and transformative, uniting Spain and setting the stage for its golden era of global dominance. For by the time of her death in 1504, Isabella had laid the foundations not just of modern Spain, but of one of the world's greatest empires. Acclaimed historian Giles Tremlett chronicles the life of Isabella of Castile as she led her country out of the murky middle ages and harnessed the newest ideas and tools of the early Renaissance to turn her ill-disciplined, quarrelsome nation into a sharper, modern state with a powerful, clear-minded, and ambitious monarch at its centre. With authority, insight and flair he relates the story of this legendary, if controversial, first initiate in a small club of great European queens that includes Elizabeth I of England, Russia's Catherine the Great, and Britain's Queen Victoria.

Download or read book Living Faith written by Susan Crawford Sullivan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have made urban mothers living in poverty a focus of their research for decades. These women’s lives can be difficult as they go about searching for housing and decent jobs and struggling to care for their children while surviving on welfare or working at low-wage service jobs and sometimes facing physical or mental health problems. But until now little attention has been paid to an important force in these women’s lives: religion. Based on in-depth interviews with women and pastors, Susan Crawford Sullivan presents poor mothers’ often overlooked views. Recruited from a variety of social service programs, most of the women do not attend religious services, due to logistical challenges or because they feel stigmatized and unwanted at church. Yet, she discovers, religious faith often plays a strong role in their lives as they contend with and try to make sense of the challenges they face. Supportive religious congregations prove important for women who are involved, she finds, but understanding everyday religion entails exploring beyond formal religious organizations. Offering a sophisticated analysis of how faith both motivates and at times constrains poor mothers’ actions, Living Faith reveals the ways it serves as a lens through which many view and interpret their worlds.
Download or read book The Bleeding Heart written by Shellbie Breaux and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bleeding Heart: The Eternal Love Novels By: Shellbie Breaux What would you do in a world that was not what it seemed? In a world that our deepest, darkest fears, and the boogie monsters that we swore were under our beds at night were real. Join me in a story about a girl that should have never existed and a guy that was disowned by his pack and left to fight for himself. What will happen and is love to overcome all boundaries and taboos of their world? My feet pounding against the ground. My heart racing to keep up, I ran, I ran as hard I could, I can’t fail. I thought I can’t fail her, she must live for Abigail, she must live for all who suffered at the hands of those monsters. His speed slowed at the memory of his beautiful wife that died only a couple hours ago giving birth to his one and only baby girl. FLEE!! His Bain screamed at him. They are right behind me. RUN!! He could sense his pursuit behind him, he could hear them thrashing through the forest screaming at and cursing as they chased him. He increased his speed. Yes, he thought chase me because every step you take is a step away from my angel Isabella, you will not have her. “Give up they screamed behind me there is nowhere to run you will burn for the crimes you committed against your race.” He couldn’t help but laugh at that as he ran through the thick brush and undergrowth of the forest in the northern mountains of Montana, he laughed so hard he almost lost his footing, gathering his wits again, he screamed over his shoulder, “If loving another is a crime, then I would do it a thousand times more.” The Bleeding Heart follows a young lady who progresses through life that is constantly challenging her in her mortality, her personality, and basically everything about her. It throws obstacles at her that normal people probably wouldn't get over and with her. It makes her personality and her overall character grow in to a story line hero, even though she doesn't really want to be a hero. The Bleeding Heart reminds us that we should never think we don't have a voice, and even though this life may make us seem as if we are on a rollercoaster going up and down and we can't seem to stop, we can't seem to make anything go right, we do have people who surround us who care enough about us to help.

Download or read book Lee s Maverick General written by Hal Bridges and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the high-ranking gray uniforms Daniel Harvey Hill caused a stir as a sash of red in a bullpen would. Hot-tempered, outspoken, he stormed his way through the Civil War, leading his soldiers at Malvern Hill and Antietam, and sometimes stepping on the toes of superiors. But he was much more than a seemingly impervious shield against Union bullets: a devout Christian, a family man, a gloomy fatalist, an intellectual. Lee’s Maverick General makes clear that he was often caught in the crossfire of military politics and ultimately made a scapegoat for the costly, barren victory at Chickamauga. Hal Bridges, drawing on Hill’s unpublished papers, offers an outsider’s inside views of Lee, Jefferson Davis, Braxton Bragg, James Longstreet, Stonewall Jackson, and others up and down the embattled line. In his introduction, Gary W. Gallagher rounds out the portrait of the controversial Hill, whose reading of military affairs was always perceptive.
