Book Object Oriented Technology ECOOP 98 Workshop Reader

Download or read book Object Oriented Technology ECOOP 98 Workshop Reader written by Serge Demeyer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of writing (mid-October 1998) we can look back at what has been a very successful ECOOP’98. Despite the time of the year – in the middle of what is traditionally regarded as a holiday period – ECOOP'98 was a record breaker in terms of number of participants. Over 700 persons found their way to the campus of the Brussels Free University to participate in a wide range of activities. This 3rd ECOOP workshop reader reports on many of these activities. It contains a careful selection of the input and a cautious summary of the outcome for the numerous discussions that happened during the workshops, demonstrations and posters. As such, this book serves as an excellent snapshot of the state of the art in the field of object oriented programming. About the diversity of the submissions A workshop reader is, by its very nature, quite diverse in the topics covered as well as in the form of its contributions. This reader is not an exception to this rule: as editors we have given the respective organizers much freedom in their choice of presentation because we feel form follows content. This explains the diversity in the types of reports as well as in their lay out.

Book Database and Expert Systems Applications

Download or read book Database and Expert Systems Applications written by Trevor Bench-Capon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-08-20 with total page 1123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA) conferences bring together researchers and practitioners from all over the world to exchange ideas, experiences and opinions in a friendly and stimulating environment. The papers are at once a record of what has been achieved and the first steps towards shaping the future of information systems. DEXA covers a broad field, and all aspects of database, knowledge base and related technologies and their applications are represented. Once again there were a good number of submissions: 241 papers were submitted and of these the programme committee selected 103 to be presented. DEXA’99 took place in Florence and was the tenth conference in the series, following events in Vienna, Berlin, Valencia, Prague, Athens, London, Zurich, Toulouse and Vienna. The decade has seen many developments in the areas covered by DEXA, developments in which DEXA has played its part. I would like to express thanks to all the institutions which have actively supported and made possible this conference, namely: • University of Florence, Italy • IDG CNR, Italy • FAW – University of Linz, Austria • Austrian Computer Society • DEXA Association In addition, we must thank all the people who have contributed their time and effort to make the conference possible. Special thanks go to Maria Schweikert (Technical University of Vienna), M. Neubauer and G. Wagner (FAW, University of Linz). We must also thank all the members of the programme committee, whose careful reviews are important to the quality of the conference.

Book Multimedia Database in Perspective

Download or read book Multimedia Database in Perspective written by Peter M.G. Apers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, multimedia has emerged as a major research and de velopment area. Pushed by advanced technology like huge-capacity storage de vices, fast networks, and powerful work stations, new applications have arisen. Many definitions of multimedia systems exist, one of them being computer sys tems that support interactive use of at least one of the following information sources: graphics, image, voice, sound, and video. These systems have caused a boom in the world of entertainment, but also in other business areas great opportunities for novel products and services are available. The size of multi media data is often huge, and the storage of huge amounts of data is a task normally allocated to database management systems. Although some modern database management systems offer facilities to support development of multi media applications, many problems related to multimedia support are still not well understood. This book reports on research efforts to solve some of these problems. An in troductory knowledge of databases, and also of operating systems and network technology is assumed. The book is very suitable as material for courses at senior or graduate level, but also for upgrading the skills of computer scientists working on database management systems, multimedia systems or applications. The book consists of four parts. Part I is called "Requirements for a Mul timedia Database" and comprises chapters one to three. Chapter one presents an outline of the book.

Book Quality of Future Internet Services

Download or read book Quality of Future Internet Services written by Jon Crowcroft and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-29 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this book present various viewpoints on the design and - plementation of techniques for QoS engineering for Internet services. They were selected from more than 70 submissions to the 1st International workshop on “Quality of future Internet services” (QofIS) organized by COST Action 263. The main focus of the papers is on the creation, con?guration and deployment of end-to-end services over a QoS assured Internet using the IntServ (Integrated Services) and Di?Serv (Di?erentiated Services) models. The main technical p- gramme was completed by two keynote talks: IETF Chair Fred Baker opened the workshop with a discussion on major Internet development directions and Andrew M. Odlyzko of AT&T Labs Research gave the closing talk on Internet charging issues. The presentation of papers was organised in 9 sessions. The emphasis of Session 1 is on an assessment of the essential building blocks for a QoS assured Internet, i.e., queueing and scheduling, which basically de?nes the space for end-to-end services. The papers of this session discuss the bounds we may expect from these building blocks, the issues of queueing and scheduling management, and the parameters we need to tune in a dynamic implementation. Flow control and congestion control cannot be considered without regard to the dominating impact of TCP. The keyword of Session 2 is, therefore, Intern- friendly adaptation. Four papers in this session are complementary and together present an emerging understanding of a basic optimal area for such adaptation.

Download or read book CSL 87 written by Egon Börger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-09-14 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers which were presented to the workshop "Computer-Science Logic" held in Karlsruhe on October 12-16, 1987. Traditionally Logic, or more specifically, Mathematical Logic splits into several subareas: Set Theory, Proof Theory, Recursion Theory, and Model Theory. In addition there is what sometimes is called Philosophical Logic which deals with topics like nonclassical logics and which for historical reasons has been developed mainly at philosphical departments rather than at mathematics institutions. Today Computer Science challenges Logic in a new way. The theoretical analysis of problems in Computer Science for intrinsic reasons has pointed back to Logic. A broad class of questions became visible which is of a basically logical nature. These questions are often related to some of the traditional disciplines of Logic but normally without being covered adequately by any of them. The novel and unifying aspect of this new branch of Logic is the algorithmic point of view which is based on experiences people had with computers. The aim of the "Computer-Science Logic" workshop and of this volume is to represent the richness of research activities in this field in the German-speaking countries and to point to their underlying general logical principles.

Book Distributed Interactive Media

Download or read book Distributed Interactive Media written by M. Mauve and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Networked computer games, distributed virtual reality systems and shared whiteboard presentations are prominent examples of distributed interactive media - they allow a group of users to interact with the medium itself. This book investigates the distributed interactive media class in detail. Topics include: abstract media model, how to ensure consistency, an application-level protocol and how to develop reusable functionality such as support for late-comers and session-recording. The main intention of this book is to demonstrate that distinct distributed interactive media have many problems in common and to show how to solve these problems in a generic and reusable fashion for the whole media.

Book Applications of Declarative Programming and Knowledge Management

Download or read book Applications of Declarative Programming and Knowledge Management written by Dietmar Seipel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the 15th International Conference on Applications of Declarative Programming and Knowledge M- agement, INAP 2004, and the 18th Workshop on Logic Programming, WLP 2004, which were held jointly in Potsdam, Germany, from March 4th to 6th, 2004. Declarative programming is an advanced paradigm for the modeling and solving of complex problems. This speci?cation method has become more and more attractive in recent years, for example, in the domains of databases, for the processing of natural language, for the modeling and processing of combinatorial problems, and for establishing knowledge-based systems for the Web. The INAP conferences provide a forum for intensive discussions of appli- tions of important technologies around logic programming, constraint problem solving, and closely related advanced software. They comprehensively cover the impact of programmable logic solvers in the Internet society, its underlying te- nologies, and leading-edge applications in industry, commerce, government, and social services. The Workshops on Logic Programming are the annual meeting of the Society for Logic Programming (GLP e.V.). They bring together researchers interested in logic programming, constraint programming, and related areas like databases and arti?cial intelligence. Previous workshops have been held in Germany, A- tria, and Switzerland. Thetopicsoftheselectedpapersofthisyear’sjointconferenceconcentrateon three currently important ?elds: knowledge management and decision support, constraint programming and constraint solving, and declarative programming and Web-based systems.

Book Concrete and Abstract Voronoi Diagrams

Download or read book Concrete and Abstract Voronoi Diagrams written by Rolf Klein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1989-12-20 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Voronoi diagram of a set of sites is a partition of the plane into regions, one to each site, such that the region of each site contains all points of the plane that are closer to this site than to the other ones. Such partitions are of great importance to computer science and many other fields. The challenge is to compute Voronoi diagrams quickly. The problem is that their structure depends on the notion of distance and the sort of site. In this book the author proposes a unifying approach by introducing abstract Voronoi diagrams. These are based on the concept of bisecting curves, which are required to have some simple properties that are actually possessed by most bisectors of concrete Voronoi diagrams. Abstract Voronoi diagrams can be computed efficiently and there exists a worst-case efficient algorithm of divide-and-conquer type that applies to all abstract Voronoi diagrams satisfying a certain constraint. The author shows that this constraint is fulfilled by the concrete diagrams based on large classes of metrics in the plane.
