Book Word and Sentence Book Vol 2

Download or read book Word and Sentence Book Vol 2 written by John H. Haaren and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Word and Sentence Book, Vol. 2: A Graded Course in Spelling The plan of work begun in the former book of this course has been continued and extended in this second book. As in that book, so in this, there are abundant exercises for copying and dictation, many lists of words, and frequent opportunities for practice in the application of the rules for spelling. Punctuation, capitalization, and syllabication receive continued attention. The features specially prominent in this book are the exercises in the use of the dictionary, the study of prefixes, suffixes, and roots, and the excellence of the selections for copying, dictation, and writing from memory. To use a dictionary, directory, encyclopaedia, or similar book of reference, one must know the order of the letters of the alphabet, a knowledge which modern methods of teaching reading have neglected. An endeavor has been made in this book to supply such knowledge if it is wanting and to strengthen it if it is weak. The study of words should not be restricted to their spelling. Their meaning as determined by prefix, suffix, and root should also receive attention. But the etymological meaning of many words has been lost to sight in the customary use of language. Book The Dewey Speller Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dewey Speller Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Edward McLoughlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dewey Speller, Vol. 2 The ability to spell well is a practical and, therefore, a desirable accomplishment. It is a mark of intellectual power and a source of intellectual pleasure. Under normal conditions there is no excuse for poor spelling. That many otherwise good scholars are poor spellers is a well-known fact, but it is an inexcusable and humiliating fact. Poor spelling is an intellectual defect, and its prevalence is without reason or justification. It is not due to a lack of interest on the part of pupils or teachers, but to a lack of proper appreciation of the value of the subject and to inefficient methods of teaching. Spelling cannot be taught with success incidentally any more than history or geography can be so taught. Its importance is not incidental, and its teaching should not be indirect nor haphazard it should be regular and systematic. Lessons should be assigned in an orderly and methodical way, they should be studied carefully and attentively, and they should be recited separately and independently of other subjects. Some pupils are eye-spellers and some are ear-spellers; some learn to spell by seeing words and others learn by hearing words. Eye-spelling is pronounced in some, and ear-spelling is equally pronounced in others. Eye-spellers predominate, and, therefore, written spelling should prevail. There are pupils whose memory of word forms secured through the eye or ear is so poor that they learn to spell by writing words the muscular spelling. Those facts suggest a method of teaching spelling that combines eye, ear, and muscle impressions. Such a method is presented in Sug gestions to Teachers. Book Yale Classics Vol 2

Download or read book Yale Classics Vol 2 written by Lucius Annaeus Seneca and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 5587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is based on the required reading list of Yale Department of Classics. Originally designed for students, this anthology is meant for everyone eager to know more about the history and literature of this period, interested in poetry, philosophy and rhetoric of Ancient Rome. Latin literature is a natural successor of Ancient Greek literature. The beginning of Classic Roman literature dates to 240 BC. From that point on, Latin literature would flourish for the next six centuries. Latin was the language of the ancient Romans, but it was also the lingua franca of Western Europe throughout the Middle Ages. Consequently, Latin Literature outlived the Roman Empire and it included European writers who followed the fall of the Empire, from religious writers like Aquinas, to secular writers like Francis Bacon, Baruch Spinoza, and Isaac Newton. This collection presents all the major Classic Roman authors, including Cicero, Virgil, Ovid and Horace whose work intrigues and fascinates readers until this day.
