Book Practical Piety Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Piety Classic Reprint written by De Sales Francis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Piety St. Francis de Sales was born on August 21, 1567, at the Castle of Sales, near Annecy, the seat of the ancient and noble family of that name, to which he belonged. His father was Francis Count of Sales, and his mother, who was also descended from a noble stock, Frances de Sionas. The history of his infancy is pleasing and beautiful. Before his birth, the holy countess his mother offered the fruit of her womb to God, and prayed fervently that he would rather deprive her of the happiness of seeing herself a mother, than that her child should hereafter become an enemy of God. Her prayers were heard: for the young Francis, even from his earliest years, showed an extraordinary goodness and sweetness of disposition. He loved God as soon as he began to know him; and it is said that the first words which he uttered were, "God and my mother love me well." The countess took great pains to bring up her son in innocence and holiness, and he did not disappoint her watchful care. He loved to read holy books, to be often in church, to visit the poor, and to deny himself food as far as he was able, in order to bestow it on them. His capacity for learning was no less remarkable; and on his arriving at the proper age, he was sent to the college of Annecy. He there applied himself with great diligence to his studies, without, however at all relaxing his zeal for devotion. He very early wished to consecrate himself to Almighty God in the ecclesiastical state, and with the consent of his father he received the tonsure in 1578, at the age of twelve year. Some time afterwards his parents sent him to the University of Paris, where he went through a course of rhetoric and philosophy at the schools of the Jesuits, and also studied theology, partly there and partly at the Sorbonne. His principal teacher was the celebrated Maldonatus, and he studied the learned languages under Genebrard, with a view chiefly to a more profound acquaintance with the sacred scriptures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vital Godliness: A Treatise on Experimental and Practical Piety The test of real character is to be sought in each man's experience. He who has never exercised faith, repentance, love, humility, hope, and joy, cannot be profited by his theo ries and speculations on these subjects. All knowledge which is unfelt and inoperative puffs up the mind and hardens the heart. It is better to have the workings of gracious affections than to be able to define them, or to Speak ever so learnedly respecting them. The great use of a large part of divine truth is rightly to affect our minds and hearts, and so to control our practice. It is often doubted whether the present age is remarkable for depth of religious feeling. In many cases ministers preach a low experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Piety: Four Discourses Delivered at Central Music Hall, Chicago I honor the prudence that foresees the rainy day and anticipates the wants of old age. I would not have man less provident than the ant that does have a care for the non-productive winter. Before I begin to talk about the Economies of Religion, let me admit that there are some phases of religion that must be classed among the last luxuries of the wealthy; they are too costly for many, perhaps for most of you to indulge in. The religion of outward form is very expensive. It is a luxury that demands very good clothes, and a costly church to show them off in. Impressive architecture, beautiful interiors, artistic music, professionally rendered, are all desirable, but they are scarcely for those who are struggling to feed and train growing families. I believe in this material world and all the good it contains. I believe in creature comforts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Piety, or the Influence of the Religion of the Heart on the Conduct of the Life, Vol. 1 of 2 While the orator boldly strove to check the ambition, and arrest the injustice of the king, the simple herald barely reminded him, how short would be the reign of injustice, how in evitable and how near was the final period of ambition. Let it be remembered to the credit of the Monarch, that while the thunders of the Politician were intolerable, the Monitor was of his own appointment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Piety Without Asceticism, or the Protestant Kempis: A Manual of Christian Faith and Practice It must, indeed, be admitted, that, in the pre sent day, there is no deficiency of religious publi cations; several excellent in their kind. But, it. Cannot be denied, that many Offend against good taste; and, what is Of far graver consequence, that many give erroneous and distorted views of the Gospel System. With either Of these defects, the works which form this compilation do not, in any degree, seem chargeable. On the contrary, it may truly be affirmed, that they are written with great purity and elegance of manner, and that they present, to all capable minds, the very 'pith and kernel' of inward practical Christianity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT is true I am continually imploring that many graces may descend upon your soul; but above all, and for the sake of all, do I ask for Divine love; for therein is our all. It is our honey, in which, and by which, all the affections of our hearts should be preserved and sweetened. My God, how happy is the interior kingdom, when this holy love reigneth there! How happy are the faculties of our soul, which obey a king so holy and so wise! No, under His obedience, and in this state, He suffereth not great sins to dwell, nor even any affection for them. True, He allows them to approach nigh to the frontiers, in order to exercise the interior virtues in war, and to make them valiant; and He suffers venial sins and imperfections, like spies, to run up and down in His kingdom: but that is only to make us know that without Him we should be a prey to all our enemies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Progress: The Practical Christianity of Christ I early became impressed with the importance of that maxim of our Saviour, which teaches us that eternal happiness is not to be earned by merely crying, Lord! Lord! In the emotions of speculative piety, but by earnestly and actively doing the will of the Father, striving to conquer the evil tendencies of our nature, and devoting our intelligence, our abilities and our means, to furthering the welfare of our brethren on earth. It is of course necessary that we should guard against being misled by impulsive zeal, and very essential that we should observe in our manifestations of the love of our neighbour, the gradations of devotedness marked for us by the natural ties of relationship and affection. Download or read book Men and Women of Deep Piety Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Clara McLeister and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Women of Deep Piety We owe a special debt of gratitude to Rev. E. E. Shel hamer who, as a father in the Gospel, so kindly encouraged us in this work and undertook the publishing of it. He has very helpfully criticised our manuscripts, and abridged them for publication, and in addition has contributed several original sketches. His many fruitful years of labor, as author and evangelist, his holy and unblameable life, his magnanimity of soul, and his God-given insight into human character, lend special weight and value to whatever passes through his hands. We realize that the value of the book has been very much in creased by his practical co-operation. Let us approach holy lives reverently and, drawing aside the curtain to study the secrets of their success and power, may the Holy Spirit breathe upon our hearts, and transform us more perfectly into the image of God's dear Son. If these pages become blest to the awakening of sinners and the edifying of the body of Christ, may all the glory be ascribed to Him who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peou liar people.
