Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Illumination Before going into the details of the various points involved in artificial lighting, a short statement of some of the principal reasons why present attempts at efficient illumination are so often found faulty will aid to an understanding of the subject. One reason why much light is wasted is that frequently too much of the light goes in directions where it is not needed and too little in directions where it is needed. If light coming from a lamp were a tangible thing, as, for example, water coming from a hose, failure to direct it where needed would be more apparent than it is. No one would think of trying to wash windows, flush off pavements or do similar work calling for a concentrated stream of water with a hose fitted with a lawn sprinkler which throws a gentle spray in all directions. Nor would one think of using a nozzle giving a powerful stream on a flower bed or a soft, newly-made lawn. The light thrown in different directions around a lamp can be modified with globes and reflectors just as the direction and character of a stream of water issuing from a hose can be modified bv the nozzle. The important point is to pick the right kind of nozzle and the right kind of reflector or globe for the particular work in hand. Although a certain amount of light on ceilings and walls is a good thing, it is quite likely to be the case that a much larger proportion of the total light goes in those directions than is at all necessary, while a smaller proportion than is necessary is thrown in places where it can be utilized. On the other hand, there are cases where the reverse of this is true. It is of first importance to know what effects various reflectors, shades and globes will produce. It can now be said quite positively that this gas is the light of the future for country houses and works, unless, of course, some thing better' and cheaper should be devised, which is very unlikely. Acetylene can now be made (given a proper gene rator) bya lad or any unskilled person, without super 'vision and with no risk; and it can be had at a cost that compares equally With coal gas at about 3s. 6d. Per thousand feet for a given candle-power or brilliancy of illumination. This is after allowing for wear and tear and interest on outlay. Should the present price of carbide go down, or should its gas-yielding qualities be increased, then acetylene will compare, of course, more favourably still. 'acetylene. The present cost of the gas, however, is no obstacle to its free adoption, for it is' in very few country places that coal gas costs less than 3s. 6d. Per thousand feet, and in many districts it exceeds this greatly. Probably most people would rather pay a little more for coal gas supplied by a gas company, as the trouble of making the acetylene, small as it is or should be, is still a trouble, and the outlay for the apparatus has to be considered. Therefore acetylene is unlikely to displace coal gas where the latter exists but it is already a possible and strong rival to coal gas if it should be a question of which gas plant shall be laid down to light a village. For single-residence plants acetylene has nothing to fear from coal' gas, neither need it fear much from gasoline, which is dirty, ill - smelling and expensive in compari son with the later illuminant. Notwithstanding the extensive possibilities in fighting at the present time and the myriad ramifications of the attendant problems into various sciences and arts, there is still a tendency on the part of many to look upon a lighting problem primarily from the engineering standpoint regardless of the nature of the problem. Bearing witness to this fact are the books on lighting which consist largely of engineering data and considerations. A vast amount of lighting which has been well done, has been accomplished through applications of scientific and artistic principles not covered by engineering data.
