Book Practical Exercises in Elementary Meteorology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Exercises in Elementary Meteorology Classic Reprint written by Robert Decourcy Ward and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Exercises in Elementary Meteorology The advance of meteorology as a school study has been much hampered by the lack of a published outline of work in this subject which may be undertaken during the school years. There are several excellent text-books for more advanced study, but there is no laboratory manual for use in the elementary portions of the science. In many secondary schools some instruction in meteorology is given, and the keeping of meteorological records by the scholars is every year becoming more general. There is yet, however, but little system in this work, and, in consequence, there is little definite result. The object of this book is to supply a guide in the elementary observational and inductive studies in meteorology. This Manual is not intended to replace the text-books, but is designed to prepare the way for their more intelligent use. Simple preliminary exercises in the taking of meteorological observations, and in the study of the daily weather maps, as herein suggested, will lay a good foundation on which later studies, in connection with the textbooks, may be built up. Explanations of the various facts discovered through these exercises are not considered to lie within the scope of this book. They may be found in any of the newer text-books. This Manual lays little claim to originality. Its essential features are based on the recommendations in the Report on Geography of the Committee of Ten. Book A Short Course in Elementary Meteorology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short Course in Elementary Meteorology Classic Reprint written by W. H. Pick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Course in Elementary Meteorology The British Empire has produced some of the world's foremost meteorologists - Halley, Beaufort, Abercromby, Blan ford, Eliot, and Sh aw, to mention only a few - but, until recently, no one but a few specialists thought it worth his while to make a serious study of meteorology. But things have now changed, for the war taught us the importance of meteorology in practical life, and the aviator has arrived with his active life in the region of nature which we meteorologists have only looked into from below. Meteorology, from being the hobby of a few and the life's work of a still smaller number of despised official weather prophets, has come into its own, and not only the aviator but the general public is asking for the means to study this neglected branch of science. It is, therefore, with the greatest pleasure that I welcome this little book and trust that it is only the first of a long series, for meteorology is still in its infancy, and as it develops text-books must be rewritten or they will become worse than useless. Download or read book A Short Course in Elementary Meteorology written by W. H. Pick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Course in Elementary Meteorology This unimposing little book is a remarkable one, for it marks an epoch; there are numerous books on elementary meteorology, but this is the first which has been written by a British teacher for a class of students who are learning meteorology as a qualification for their profession. The British Empire has produced some of the world's foremost meteorologists -Hailey, Beaufort, Abercromby, Blan - ford, Eliot, and Shaw, to mention only a few - but, until recently, no one but a few specialists thought it worth his while to make a serious study of meteorology. But things have now changed, for the war taught us the importance of meteorology in practical life, and the aviator has arrived with his active life in the region of nature which we meteorologists have only looked into from below. Meteorology, from being the hobby of a few and the life's work of a still smaller number of despised official "weather prophets," has come into its own, and not only the aviator but the general public is asking for the means to study this neglected branch of science. It is, therefore, with the greatest pleasure that I welcome this little book and trust that it is only the first of a long series, for meteorology is still in its infancy, and as it develops text-books must be rewritten or they will become worse than useless. This book has been written by a practical meteorologist for practical aviators and by a teacher for his students. This is an ideal combination and the product is not disappointing. I wish, however, to warn the student that there are many unsolved problems in meteorology, and therefore he should not be satisfied with any explanation or theory which the book contains. He has been given the best explanations which it is possible to give in the present state of our knowledge, limited in some cases by the need to use elementary considerations only. All this should, however, give him a greater interest in his work, for it will afford him plenty of opportunities to use his own brains, to say nothing of the possibility of his making an important discovery. Book Meteorology Practical and Applied Classic Reprint

Download or read book Meteorology Practical and Applied Classic Reprint written by John William Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meteorology Practical and Applied I have been able to bring no small practical experience of meteor ology to bear in the writing of the pages which follow. The work is divided into four parts. A brief introduction is succeeded by a full account of the methods which are employed in practical meteorology. The third part treats of climate and weather - necessarily in a somewhat condensed and concise manner. Finally, I have endeavoured to point out, in the fourth and concluding portion of the book, a few of the practical bearings of the subject. In those closing chapters the grave question of the influence of weather and season upon disease is in some measure discussed. The time seems opportune for the publication of a popular yet scientific d104book of Meteorology. The marvellous advances of Preventive Medicine within recent years, the institution of a registrable qualification in Public Health or State Medicine in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the establishment of a new order of public servants drawn from the ranks of the medical profession - I allude to Medical Officers of Health - the vast development of international telegraphy in modern times, the hearty co-operation of the various national Weather Bureaux - all these things have done much within the last quarter of a century to raise Meteorology to the rank of a science, and have given a wonderful impetus to the continuous or the periodic study of the weather. The literature of the subject is therefore daily increasing, and volume after volume is being added to the list of standard works on Meteorology and Climatology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Course of Meteorology Soon after the appearance of the original Ger. Man edition, a French translation with notes was published (1843) by M. Man'rms, a philosopher, well acquainted with practical meteorology, having taken the observations at Norway and Spitzbergen, in 1838 and 1839, in the voyage of La Recherche; as also observations at Paris, on the Faulhorn, and elsewhere. In August of the present year he reached the summit of Mont Blanc, in conjunction with his friend M. Baavus: to the latter gentle man we are indebted for several notes in the present volume, he having communicated all the result: that he had time to reduce from the observations of the Commission of the North, and from those made on the Faulhorn. His notes are indicated throughout the work by the letter B; those of M. Maarms, by the letter M. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seven Lectures on Meteorology The author's design in forming, from his notes and with the help of previous publications, the present work, is to present in a familiar and intelligible way the facts and principles of this art and study; now becoming also a science. He does not pretend, however, to satisfy the requisitions of science by his manner of treating the subject: though teachers of a higher grade may possibly find in his work a foundation capable of such a superstructure. He has no further ambition of his own, than to instruct and entertain those, who may be prepared for the course by an ordinary degree of acquaintance with the principles of natural philosophy, and the terms of his art.
