Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Grace Soccio. My writing could not please this kindhearted woman, no matter how hard I tried. Although Gifed and Talented seventh-grade math posed no problem for me, the same was not true for Mrs. Soccio’s English class. I was frustrated that my frst assignment only netted me a C. I worked harder, making re- sion afer revision, a concept I had never really put much faith in before. At last, I produced an essay that seemed the apex of what I was capable of wr- ing. Although the topic of that essay is now lost to my memory, the grade I received was not: a B?. “Te best I could do was a B??” Te realization sank in that maybe I was not such a good writer. In those days, my youthful hubris did not understand abouc t apacity bui- ing. In other words, being challenged would result in my intellectual growth— an academic restatement of Nietzsche’s “What does not destroy me, makes me stronger.” Consequently, I asked to be withdrawn from Gifed and Talented English in the eighth grade.

Book Practical Authorship Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Authorship Classic Reprint written by James Knapp Reeve and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Authorship Thorough preparation for literary work is most desirable; but how few, in determining to enter upon a literary career, give to this any thought or attention. The young man or woman just out of school, the woman of fashion, the weary housewife, the professional man or the man of business, may conclude that he or she possesses undeveloped literary talent, and forthwith prepares to enter the arena. We say "prepares," but rather the entry into the arena is without preparation of any sort. The tyro does not understand why he is not as competent to write for editors and for the public as Jones, who appears to be successful in that line, whom he knows well and is very certain is no smarter than himself. That point of view may be correct, but he overlooks the fact that Jones has served an apprenticeship of many years. The beginner should ask himself if he is willing to do the same, and if not, would better resign his literary ambitions at once. When the time arrives that men and women who wish to become writers will look upon the idea exactly as they would upon that of becoming a blacksmith, or an artist, or an opera singer, there will be fewer incompetents knocking at editorial doors. When they realize that training is all-important, that success is to be expected only after this training, and as the result of concentrated effort and experience; that any other success is phenomenal and unusual; and that this course pursued with great patience, allied to some amount of inherent aptitude and ability will bring a measure of success, then writing will be a less sad business all around. Book excerpt: This book provides medical students and physicians with a practical, step-by-step guide on how to write and publish a medical case report. The case report is the traditional way for physicians to describe their unique or unusual cases to a broad audience and it plays an important role in the discovery of new diseases or syndromes, unusual manifestations of disease, important adverse drug reactions, and the generation of hypotheses for further study. This book guides readers through the process from choosing a case to report on to finding a publisher and then comment on future directions and potential new uses of case reports, including expanded computer case databases to optimize care for individual patients and new applications in medical education. Interspersed throughout the text are example case reports, many written by the authors, with commentary on their experiences working with those reports to provide context and aid readers in creating clear, concise, and useful case reports.
