Book Practical and Ethical Dilemmas in Researching Sensitive Topics with Populations Considered Vulnerable

Download or read book Practical and Ethical Dilemmas in Researching Sensitive Topics with Populations Considered Vulnerable written by Ana Patrícia Hilário and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to support social science researchers who interact with vulnerability and/or sensitivity in the context of their research. Whilst there has been some important debate about the theoretical, methodological and ethical issues of conducting research on sensitive topics, and/or with vulnerable populations, the number of scholarly publications focused solely on these topics is limited and not up to date. The book intends to fill this gap by providing various research experiences, as well as the elements that characterize them. The articles selected for this book intend, first and foremost, to stimulate reflexivity amongst the use of the concepts of sensitive topics and vulnerable groups, and to provide tools that will allow researchers to improve their research practices The book integrates several articles that explore a wide range of dilemmas that, to a certain extent, might allow the reader to access the backstage of this type of research. The reader will find here a rich and fruitful space for theoretical and empirical reflection, where several social science researchers with different backgrounds share their experiences and research paths in a rigorous and creative way.

Book Sharing Research Data to Improve Public Health in Africa

Download or read book Sharing Research Data to Improve Public Health in Africa written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharing research data on public health issues can promote expanded scientific inquiry and has the potential to advance improvements in public health. Although sharing data is the norm in some research fields, sharing of data in public health is not as firmly established. In March 2015, the National Research Council organized an international conference in Stellenbosch, South Africa, to explore the benefits of and barriers to sharing research data within the African context. The workshop brought together public health researchers and epidemiologists primarily from the African continent, along with selected international experts, to talk about the benefits and challenges of sharing data to improve public health, and to discuss potential actions to guide future work related to public health research data sharing. Sharing Research Data to Improve Public Health in Africa summarizes the presentations and discussions from this workshop.

Book Ethical Considerations for Research on Housing Related Health Hazards Involving Children

Download or read book Ethical Considerations for Research on Housing Related Health Hazards Involving Children written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-11-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethical Considerations for Research on Housing-Related Health Hazards Involving Children explores the ethical issues posed when conducting research designed to identify, understand, or ameliorate housing-related health hazards among children. Such research involves children as subjects and is conducted in the home and in communities. It is often conducted with children in low-income families given the disproportionate prevalence of housing-related conditions such as lead poisoning, asthma, and fatal injuries among these children. This book emphasizes five key elements to address the particular ethical concerns raised by these characteristics: involving the affected community in the research and responding to their concerns; ensuring that parents understand the essential elements of the research; adopting uniform federal guidelines for such research by all sponsors (Subpart D of 45 CFR 46); providing guidance on key terms in the regulations; and viewing research oversight as a system with important roles for researchers, IRBs and their research institutions, sponsors and regulators of research, and the community.

Book Ethics in Qualitative Research

Download or read book Ethics in Qualitative Research written by Dr Melanie Mauthner and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2002-11-19 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the theoretical and practical aspects of ethical dilemmas in qualitative research. To many researchers, `ethics' has been associated with following ethical guidelines and gaining ethics approval from academic bodies. However, the complexities of researching private lives and placing accounts in the public arena increasingly raise ethical issues which are not easily solved by rules and guidelines. This book addresses the gap between research practice and ethical principles that inform it, focusing on responsibility and accountability in applied feminist research practice. The book explores ethical issues in research from a range of angles, including: - Access and informed consent - Negotiating participation - Rapport - The intentions of feminist research - Epistemology and data analysis - Tensions between being a professional researcher and a `caring' professional The book includes practical guidelines to aid ethical decision-making rooted in feminist ethics of care. Ethics in Qualitative Research is designed for academics, professionals and students carrying out research, and is a timely teaching text for ethics in research across the social sciences.

Book Elder Abuse and Its Prevention

Download or read book Elder Abuse and Its Prevention written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elder Abuse and Its Prevention is the summary of a workshop convened in April 2013 by the Institute of Medicine's Forum on Global Violence Prevention. Using an ecological framework, this workshop explored the burden of elder abuse around the world, focusing on its impacts on individuals, families, communities, and societies. Additionally, the workshop addressed occurrences and co-occurrences of different types of abuse, including physical, sexual, emotional, and financial, as well as neglect. The ultimate objective was to illuminate promising global and multisectoral evidence-based approaches to the prevention of elder maltreatment. While the workshop covered scope and prevalence and unique characteristics of abuse, the intention was to move beyond what is known about elder abuse to foster discussions about how to improve prevention, intervention, and mitigation of the victims' needs, particularly through collaborative efforts. The workshop discussions included innovative intervention models and opportunities for prevention across sectors and settings. Violence and related forms of abuse against elders is a global public health and human rights problem with far-reaching consequences, resulting in increased death, disability, and exploitation with collateral effects on well-being. Data suggest that at least 10 percent of elders in the United States are victims of elder maltreatment every year. In low- and middle-income countries, where the burden of violence is the greatest, the figure is likely even higher. In addition, elders experiencing risk factors such as diminishing cognitive function, caregiver dependence, and social isolation are more vulnerable to maltreatment and underreporting. As the world population of adults aged 65 and older continues to grow, the implications of elder maltreatment for health care, social welfare, justice, and financial systems are great. However, despite the magnitude of global elder maltreatment, it has been an underappreciated public health problem. Elder Abuse and Its Prevention discusses the prevalence and characteristics of elder abuse around the world, risk factors for abuse and potential adverse health outcomes, and contextually specific factors, such as culture and the role of the community.
