Book Jules Breton Painter of Peasant Life

Download or read book Jules Breton Painter of Peasant Life written by Annette Bourrut Lacouture and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jules Breton (1827-1906), known as one of the first 'peasant painters', created beautiful scenes of rural French life and was a highly popular figure among the Salon artists of his era. Taking his inspiration from his native Artois and from the landscapes of Brittany, where he stayed for long periods, he painted peasant women and men performing their daily activities, meticulously observing their world and making it a place of peace and harmony. During the second half of the nineteenth century, rewards and official decorations were heaped upon him, and his paintings were purchased not only by the emperor but also by collectors in America, Britain and Ireland. However, Breton's work became eclipsed by the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century, and he was eventually forgotten. This book now pays Breton the tribute that he deserves. It traces the development of his career and the forces that influenced him from his childhood through his early training in Belgium and Paris to his years in Brittany. The book presents and discusses a number of important paintings by Breton, some of which have been almost unknown until now, and it shows how they reflect the artist's social and humanitarian concerns as well as his painterly abilities.

Book excerpt: Christian Roberts is a 19-year old art student who is attracted to his 36-year old humanities professor, a statuesque French beauty named Solange Doucette. A chance meeting between the two at school late one night sets them on a trajectory that seals their destiny. After their first night together they realize there is a deep, mystical connection between them that transcends their age difference. After an enlightening sojourn at a Tantric Yoga ashram in India, Solange convinces Christian to move to her family's villa outside Paris. With Christian attending art school in Paris and making a name for himself as a sculptor of functional art, and Solange now expecting their first child, it seems that a happy, fulfilling life is assured for the unlikely couple, despite Solange's nagging fears that life is a tenuous thread. Then, one day, the thread snaps and their idyllic existence is forever upended by a catastrophic event that no one ever saw coming - except, perhaps, Solange, but she was powerless to stop it.

Book France and the Visual Arts Since 1945

Download or read book France and the Visual Arts Since 1945 written by Catherine Dossin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking on the myth of France's creative exhaustion following World War II, this collection of essays brings together an international team of scholars, whose research offers English readers a rich and complex overview of the place of France and French artists in the visual arts since 1945. Addressing a wide range of artistic practices, spanning over seven decades, and using different methodologies, their contributions cover ground charted and unknown. They introduce greater depth and specificity to familiar artists and movements, such as Lettrism, Situationist International or Nouveau Réalisme, while bringing to the fore lesser known artists and groups, including GRAPUS, the Sociological Art Collective, and Nicolas Schöffer. Collectively, they stress the political dimensions and social ambitions of the art produced in France at the time, deconstruct the traditional geography of the French art world, and highlight the multiculturalism of the French art scene that resulted from its colonial past and the constant flux of artistic travels and migrations. Ultimately, the book contributes to a story of postwar art in which France can be inscribed not as a main or sub chapter, but rather as a vector in the wider constellation of modern and contemporary art.
