Book Voltage Stability Analysis with High Distributed Generation DG Penetration

Download or read book Voltage Stability Analysis with High Distributed Generation DG Penetration written by Rashid Al-Abri and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in Distributed Generation (DG) in power system networks has been growing rapidly. This increase can be explained by factors such as environmental concerns, the restructuring of electricity businesses, and the development of technologies for small-scale power generation. DG units are typically connected so as to work in parallel with the utility grid; however, with the increased penetration level of these units and the advancements in unit's control techniques, there is a great possibility for these units to be operated in an autonomous mode known as a microgrid. Integrating DG units into distribution systems can have an impact on different practices such as voltage profile, power flow, power quality, stability, reliability, and protection. The impact of the DG units on stability problem can be further classified into three issues: voltage stability, angle stability, and frequency stability. As both angle and frequency stability are not often seen in distribution systems, voltage stability is considered to be the most significant in such systems. In fact, the distribution system in its typical design doesn't suffer from any stability problems, given that all its active and reactive supplies are guaranteed through the substation. However, the following facts alter this situation: - With the development of economy, load demands in distribution networks are sharply increasing. Hence, the distribution networks are operating more close to the voltage instability boundaries. - The integration of distributed generation in distribution system introduces possibility of encountering some active/reactive power mismatches resulting in some stability concerns at the distribution level. Motivated by these facts, the target of this thesis is to investigate, analyze and enhance the voltage stability of distribution systems with high penetration of distributed generation. This study is important for the utilities because it can be applied with Connection Impact Assessment (CIA). The study can be added as a complement assessment to study the impacts of the installation of DG units on voltage stability.

Book Robust Control for Grid Voltage Stability High Penetration of Renewable Energy

Download or read book Robust Control for Grid Voltage Stability High Penetration of Renewable Energy written by Jahangir Hossain and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes the area of integration of renewable energy into the existing electricity grid accessible to engineers and researchers. This is a self-contained text which has models of power system devices and control theory necessary to understand and tune controllers in use currently. The new research in renewable energy integration is put into perspective by comparing the change in the system dynamics as compared to the traditional electricity grid. The emergence of the voltage stability problem is motivated by extensive examples. Various methods to mitigate this problem are discussed bringing out their merits clearly. As a solution to the voltage stability problem, the book covers the use of FACTS devices and basic control methods. An important contribution of this book is to introduce advanced control methods for voltage stability. It covers the application of output feedback methods with a special emphasis on how to bound modelling uncertainties and the use of robust control theory to design controllers for practical power systems. Special emphasis is given to designing controllers for FACTS devices to improve low-voltage ride-through capability of induction generators. As generally PV is connected in low voltage distribution area, this book also provides a systematic control design for the PV unit in distribution systems. The theory is amply illustrated with large IEEE Test systems with multiple generators and dynamic load. Controllers are designed using Matlab and tested using full system models in PSSE.

Book Voltage Stability Analysis of Power Systems with Doubly fed Induction Generators Based Distributed Generation

Download or read book Voltage Stability Analysis of Power Systems with Doubly fed Induction Generators Based Distributed Generation written by Ayub Machiri Wanjala and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing energy demand over the last few decades has led to more stresses on the power system. With the demand being equal to the available supply capacity and in some cases exceeding it, there is a need to increase the capacity of the electric system ensuring that the network security is maintained. Distributed Generation located in the Distribution Network provides the ability to meet the growing demand. With increasing concerns on the environmental impacts of conventional power stations, initiatives such as the Kyoto Protocol for Climate Change have encouraged the diversification and development of energy efficient systems. These systems rely on renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and tidal energy. However, the existing power system was not designed to include generating systems on the distribution network. As a result, the unplanned integrations of Distributed Generating Systems might cause some technical problems to the grid. Wind-based Distributed Generation Systems offer an economical and efficient solution. However, the incorporation of wind energy on the Distribution Network not only alters the power flow but in some cases results in imbalanced voltages at specific points in the network. Advances in technology has resulted in increased capacity of the Wind Energy Conversion System with some having the capability to generate more than 1MVA from a single turbine resulting in the possibility of higher Distributed Generation penetration levels on the Distribution Network. The main focus of this research is to analyse the impact of high Distributed Generating Systems penetration on the voltage stability of the network under various loading conditions. It will also analyse the control strategies to be employed to deal with any effects on the stability of the network.

Book Distributed Transmission Distribution Coordinated Energy Management Based on Generalized Master Slave Splitting Theory

Download or read book Distributed Transmission Distribution Coordinated Energy Management Based on Generalized Master Slave Splitting Theory written by Zhengshuo Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To ensure the security and economy of future power system operation in the context of a high degree of renewable energy penetration, this thesis proposes a new distributed algorithm called generalized master-slave-splitting (G-MSS) theory and a new transmission-distribution coordinated energy management (TDCEM) method that is based on the G-MSS theory. The thesis studies the mathematical properties of the G-MSS theory in detail. Based on the G-MSS theory, a distributed TDCEM method – which involves distributed security analysis, distributed voltage stability analysis, distributed economic dispatch and distributed optimal power flow for an integrated transmission-distribution system – is then developed for the first time. The thesis demonstrates that the proposed TDCEM method significantly contributes to more reliable and optimal operation in power systems. The book will benefit researchers, scientists and engineers in the field of power system operation and optimization.

Book Distribution Power Systems and Power Quality

Download or read book Distribution Power Systems and Power Quality written by Birgitte Bak-Jensen and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High penetration of fluctuating renewable power units, such as wind turbines and photo voltaic systems, and new heavy loads, such as electrical vehicles and heat pumps, which so far might not be controlled according to the actual distribution grid condition, but rather according to actual consumption of the devices, influences the distribution grid in several ways, and it may lead to voltage disturbances, frequency deviations and harmonic content beyond limits. Over voltages might be generated at power production which is too high, whereas under voltage might occur at heavy load situations; both phenomena might be seen at the same distribution radial, where harmonic injections can also come from the devices, if equipped with power converters. This has led to the main target object for this book being power quality in distribution grids. This book offers 10 papers regarding power quality issues at distribution grids. It looks into hosting capacity issues, stability analysis, reliability assessment, mitigation of voltage rise using reactor installation, power quality assessments, harmonic analysis and damping, frequency control in weak and isolated power systems, and the focus is therefore broad within the overall topic of power quality.
