Book Power Sums Gorenstein Algebras and Determinantal Loci

Download or read book Power Sums Gorenstein Algebras and Determinantal Loci written by Anthony Iarrobino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats the theory of representations of homogeneous polynomials as sums of powers of linear forms. The first two chapters are introductory, and focus on binary forms and Waring's problem. Then the author's recent work is presented mainly on the representation of forms in three or more variables as sums of powers of relatively few linear forms. The methods used are drawn from seemingly unrelated areas of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, including the theories of determinantal varieties, of classifying spaces of Gorenstein-Artin algebras, and of Hilbert schemes of zero-dimensional subschemes. Of the many concrete examples given, some are calculated with the aid of the computer algebra program "Macaulay", illustrating the abstract material. The final chapter considers open problems. This book will be of interest to graduate students, beginning researchers, and seasoned specialists. Prerequisite is a basic knowledge of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry.

Book Algebraic Geometry and Geometric Modeling

Download or read book Algebraic Geometry and Geometric Modeling written by Mohamed Elkadi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book spans the distance between algebraic descriptions of geometric objects and the rendering of digital geometric shapes based on algebraic models. These contrasting points of view inspire a thorough analysis of the key challenges and how they are met. The articles focus on important classes of problems: implicitization, classification, and intersection. Combining illustrative graphics, computations and review articles this book helps the reader gain a firm practical grasp of these subjects.

Book The Lefschetz Properties

Download or read book The Lefschetz Properties written by Tadahito Harima and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a monograph which collects basic techniques, major results and interesting applications of Lefschetz properties of Artinian algebras. The origin of the Lefschetz properties of Artinian algebras is the Hard Lefschetz Theorem, which is a major result in algebraic geometry. However, for the last two decades, numerous applications of the Lefschetz properties to other areas of mathematics have been found, as a result of which the theory of the Lefschetz properties is now of great interest in its own right. It also has ties to other areas, including combinatorics, algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, commutative algebra and representation theory. The connections between the Lefschetz property and other areas of mathematics are not only diverse, but sometimes quite surprising, e.g. its ties to the Schur-Weyl duality. This is the first book solely devoted to the Lefschetz properties and is the first attempt to treat those properties systematically.

Book Computational Algebraic Geometry

Download or read book Computational Algebraic Geometry written by Hal Schenck and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interplay between algebra and geometry is a beautiful (and fun!) area of mathematical investigation. Advances in computing and algorithms make it possible to tackle many classical problems in a down-to-earth and concrete fashion. This opens wonderful new vistas and allows us to pose, study and solve problems that were previously out of reach. Suitable for graduate students, the objective of this 2003 book is to bring advanced algebra to life with lots of examples. The first chapters provide an introduction to commutative algebra and connections to geometry. The rest of the book focuses on three active areas of contemporary algebra: Homological Algebra (the snake lemma, long exact sequence inhomology, functors and derived functors (Tor and Ext), and double complexes); Algebraic Combinatorics and Algebraic Topology (simplicial complexes and simplicial homology, Stanley-Reisner rings, upper bound theorem and polytopes); and Algebraic Geometry (points and curves in projective space, Riemann-Roch, Cech cohomology, regularity).

Book Classical Algebraic Geometry

Download or read book Classical Algebraic Geometry written by Igor V. Dolgachev and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic geometry has benefited enormously from the powerful general machinery developed in the latter half of the twentieth century. The cost has been that much of the research of previous generations is in a language unintelligible to modern workers, in particular, the rich legacy of classical algebraic geometry, such as plane algebraic curves of low degree, special algebraic surfaces, theta functions, Cremona transformations, the theory of apolarity and the geometry of lines in projective spaces. The author's contemporary approach makes this legacy accessible to modern algebraic geometers and to others who are interested in applying classical results. The vast bibliography of over 600 references is complemented by an array of exercises that extend or exemplify results given in the book.

Book Yetter Drinfel d Hopf Algebras over Groups of Prime Order

Download or read book Yetter Drinfel d Hopf Algebras over Groups of Prime Order written by Yorck Sommerhäuser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-19 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being the first monograph devoted to this subject, the book addresses the classification problem for semisimple Hopf algebras, a field that has attracted considerable attention in the last years. The special approach to this problem taken here is via semidirect product decompositions into Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebras and group rings of cyclic groups of prime order. One of the main features of the book is a complete treatment of the structure theory for such Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebras.

Book Projective Varieties with Unexpected Properties

Download or read book Projective Varieties with Unexpected Properties written by Ciro Ciliberto and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains refereed papers related to the lectures and talks given at a conference held in Siena (Italy) in June 2004. Also included are research papers that grew out of discussions among the participants and their collaborators. All the papers are research papers, but some of them also contain expository sections which aim to update the state of the art on the classical subject of special projective varieties and their applications and new trends like phylogenetic algebraic geometry. The topic of secant varieties and the classification of defective varieties is central and ubiquitous in this volume. Besides the intrinsic interest of the subject, it turns out that it is also relevant in other fields of mathematics like expressions of polynomials as sums of powers, polynomial interpolation, rank tensor computations, Bayesian networks, algebraic statistics and number theory.

Book Manis Valuations and Pr fer Extensions I

Download or read book Manis Valuations and Pr fer Extensions I written by Manfred Knebusch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-19 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is devoted to a study of relative Prüfer rings and Manis valuations, with an eye to application in real and p-adic geometry. If one wants to expand on the usual algebraic geometry over a non-algebraically closed base field, e.g. a real closed field or p-adically closed field, one typically meets lots of valuation domains. Usually they are not discrete and hence not noetherian. Thus, for a further develomemt of real algebraic and real analytic geometry in particular, and certainly also rigid analytic and p-adic geometry, new chapters of commutative algebra are needed, often of a non-noetherian nature. The present volume presents one such chapter.

Book Variational Methods for Problems from Plasticity Theory and for Generalized Newtonian Fluids

Download or read book Variational Methods for Problems from Plasticity Theory and for Generalized Newtonian Fluids written by Martin Fuchs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-12-12 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variational methods are applied to prove the existence of weak solutions for boundary value problems from the deformation theory of plasticity as well as for the slow, steady state flow of generalized Newtonian fluids including the Bingham and Prandtl-Eyring model. For perfect plasticity the role of the stress tensor is emphasized by studying the dual variational problem in appropriate function spaces. The main results describe the analytic properties of weak solutions, e.g. differentiability of velocity fields and continuity of stresses. The monograph addresses researchers and graduate students interested in applications of variational and PDE methods in the mechanics of solids and fluids.
