This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Signaling in Theory and Practice In the ensuing pages, it has not been my intention to treat the subject of railway signaling as practiced in America in anything but an elementary way. Even the elements are not always readily grasped by persons who have not had some practical railway experience, and are at least somewhat familiar with the ordinary methods pursued in constructing tracks, moving trains and in the nomenclature used by those whose daily life is spent in actual railway operation. My object has been to supply a want which I myself felt sorely at the beginning of my career as a Signal Engineer - that of an elementary text book bearing on the subject. The matter was originally compiled with a view to publishing it serially, and indeed nearly one-half of it has already appeared in that way. Although I have taken as much time as it was possible for me to spare from a busy life to arrange and revise the matter in proper form for its present appearance, I cannot but feel that I may have left a great deal yet to be done. I can only say that I have tried to do my best and that I hope the book will be well enough received to give me a chance to make any revisions which may appear advisable in a later edition. I have taken the liberty fully to express my own opinions where I have thought necessary, and have always endeavored to impress on the reader's mind that they were such so that he could take them for what they are worth. After more than eighteen years spent in the operat ing department of a large railroad, and nearly seven years as its Signal Engineer, I cannot but feel that these opinions must be worth something now if they ever will be. The reader must judge for himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Railway Signaling Classic Reprint

Download or read book Railway Signaling Classic Reprint written by Everett Edgar King and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Signaling It is the purpose of this book to collect from various sources that which is already in use in common practice in the field of railway signaling and to present it in text-book form suitable for the beginner in his study of this subject. Much of the descriptive material and many of the drawings were furnished by the various signal and supply companies specially for this book. Other descriptions and drawings were taken from catalogues and descriptive literature issued by these companies. I have not included any thing concerning specifications for the construction, installation and maintenance of materials. This is a voluminous subject in itself; besides, specifications for practically every item of equipment that enters into railway signaling are provided for in the Manual of the American Railway Association, Signal Section. In a few cases, I have quoted from the Proceedings of the American Railway Engineering Association, from the Signal Dictionary and from the Railway Signal Engineer. As I have drawn so largely from the Proceedings of the Railway Signal Association, it might be pertinent to state briefly that in its early days the organization was known as the Railway Signaling Club. Later it changed its name to the Railway Signal Association; and recently during the time when the railways were under the supervision of the Director General of Railroads, United States Railroad Administration, the organization amalgamated with the American Railway Association and took the name which it still retains, the American Railway Association, Signal Section. I might state in this connection, also, that the Manual and all the Proceedings of the organization under both the old and new regimes may be obtained from the Secretary, Mr. H. S. Balliet, 75 Church St., New York. I want to express my appreciation for the help received from all sources, for the material furnished, for the suggestions offered and for the corrections made in the preparation of the manuscript. Download or read book Railway Signal Engineering Mechanical Classic Reprint written by Leonard P. Lewis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Signal Engineering (Mechanical) The signalling of railways has developed rapidly, more especially during comparatively recent years, until it is now one of the most important branches of the Engineering Department. On its efficiency depends to a large extent the safety of the travelling public. That the Board of Trade recognises this fact is evidenced by the strict supervision which it exercises over the signalling of railways and the careful inspection made of new signalling installations. The demand of the public for greater facilities both for travelling and for merchandise, involving a greater density of traffic, has added to the complexity of railway working, while the modern necessity for speed and for heavier and longer trains has still further increased the difficulties which beset the signal engineer in providing immunity from accident. The advance in signal engineering practice has, however, been commensurate with the advance of railways. The efficiency of the system adopted on British railways may be gauged by the few accidents which occur compared with the enormous number of train movements, and of these accidents the majority are due not so much to any deficiency in'the system as to the personal equation, which unfortunately cannot be entirely eliminated. Book Railway Block Signalling

Download or read book Railway Block Signalling written by James Pigg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway "Block" Signalling: The Principles of Train Signalling and Apparatus for Ensuring Safety A considerable portion of this book appeared as a serial in T11: Electrical Engineer during the latter half of 1896. Since then the matter has been revised and considerably extended by the inclusion of descriptions of other apparatus, and by the insertion of examples of the codes used, and the regulations and rules under which signalling is carried out. Railway signalling appears to have now reached a stage at which some departure from the present methods seems probable. The lines upon which changes will be made will, in all probability, result in a greater degree of automatic control than obtains at present. The degree of control is, however, difficult to predict; and, moreover, the degree of such control desirable is a debatable subject. A study of the lines along which developments are proceeding shows at least two marked divisions. In one, the apparatus is entirely auto matic; in the other, the apparatus is so inter-connected with the operations involved in the movement of traffic, as to act as a check upon the actions of the controller of the traffic, for the time being, in such respects as experience shows to be desirable. The first is by far the more ambitious of the two, and adoption of such methods would constitute a revolution in signalling. The second is the most adaptable to present-day methods and apparatus. Which will be the survivor is difficult to indicate, but completely automatic systems admit of none of the selection which is the chief feature in the movement of heavy traffic of mixed character. The subject of signalling in all its branches is a most important one; and it is because of this importance and the difficulty of thoroughly estimating all the requirements in connection with railway signalling without an accurate knowledge of details, that the author has included the codes, regulations, and rules under which the work is carried out. A glance at the records of the Patent Office speaks volumes for the necessity of a study of detail before undertaking to supply apparatus for a given purpose. Or to meet such circumstances as have at some time given rise to accident. The applicability of apparatus to all circum stances that experience shows may arise is of quite as much importance. Electric railway signals are described as fully as seems advisable, since they are in a transitory state of rapid progress. Electro-gas and three-posi tion signals, representing the highest development of the art in America, have been treated not only from an electrical stand point, but also from a structural point of view. This book is intended for the signal and railway engineer, the electrician, and the layman; and it is modestly hoped that it Will appeal to all in any way concerned With signaling. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway-Signalling Automatic; An Introductory Treatment of the Purposes, Equipment, and Methods of Automatic Signalling and Track-Circuits for Steam and Electric Railways, for Railwaymen, Students, and Others I could not, as I looked through the accompanying pages of my son's book, help allowing my thoughts to wander over the changes that have been made, in my day, in railway-signalling. When I entered the railway service five-and-forty years ago, signal ling, generally, was very primitive. Now it is almost perfect; the machine itself has reached perfection, but the man behind the machine is human and, therefore, frail. It is in this latter respect that there is any weakness, and therein lies the main cause for the demand for automatic signalling and track circuit - the subject of the present work. I remembered, too, that, although this perfection has now been reached, its' development has been slow. It might have been reached much earlier, because, in 1872 - f0ur years before I joined the railway Sykes put down his first automatic signalling at the Victoria Station of the Metropolitan District Rail way and Dr. Robinson patented his method of track circuit on which all the automatic signalling of to-day is based. It is within the last twenty years that there has been this great development. At the time my first book was published, in May, 1900, there was no automatic signalling in this country, except that, since removed, on the Liverpool Overhead; there were not half-a-dozen installations of track-circuit, and only one power signalling plant, and that in a goods yard.
