Book excerpt: The natural exponential decay of a radioisotope used as a heat source for a thermoelectric generator makes the use of a power flattening'' device highly desirable, especially when the duration of the mission is large compared to the half life of the radioisotope. Power-flattening devices are considered which either dump excess heat outside the thermoelectric generator or use the characteristics of the generator to absorb the excess heat and thereby regulate the hot junction temperature. A number of power-flattening devices were studied both analytically and experimentally with a view toward operability in space. The most promising concepts are (a) to utilize a secondary radiator of variable area; (b) to provide thermal shunts that are sequentially removed during the mission; (c) to use a secondary radiator coupled to the heat source through a slowly evaporating thermal connection. Book excerpt: The objective of this program was to investigation of a novel means of reducing the potential ecologic hazards that may be associated with radiosotopic thermoelectric generators (RTG's). A number of short lived isotopes have lower toxicities and are more ecologically acceptable than the Plutonium 238 used at present. In addition, the shorter half lives significantly reduce the time period during which isotope encapsulation must be assured (approximately 10 half lives). The technical approach involves the use of a gas controlled heat pipe to maintain a nearly constant heat input to the thermoelectric converter in spite of the decay profile of a short lived isotopic heat source. Excess thermal power available early in life, is automatically shorted around the thermoelectric module by way of the heat pipe. A development model of a gas controlled heat pipe capable of performing the required task was constructed and tested during this program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic aspects of power generation from underwater thermoelectric generators fueled with Mixed Fission Products (MFP) are given. Costs are estimated to be less than 15 per thermal watt for two year old MFP. Studies are on a conceptual design of a unit capable of withstanding pressures equivalent to 18,000 feet submergence on the ocean bottom and 300 year containment of the nuclear heat source. Low cost bioiogical shields of both high density concrete and cast iron were considered. Studies establish the possibility of power costs as low as per watt-year in the kilowatt size, to 0 per watt-year in the 10 watt range. A comparison of the MFP generator with an equivalent SNAP-7 strontium-90 type indicates that the MFP power costs are far below those for separated radioisotope power, primarily because the highest cost item in the SNAP unit is the purified strontium-90 fuel. A one kilowatt MFP unit would weigh in the order of 20 to 30 tons maximum depending on fuel energy density, and have a diameter of 8 to 10 feet. Optimization studies were made for such factors as fuel geometry, fuel age, energy density, and insulation thickness to determine the most productive areas of reducing the original cost and overall weight estimates.
