Book Livelihood and Urban Poverty Reduction in Ethiopia

Download or read book Livelihood and Urban Poverty Reduction in Ethiopia written by Tegegne Gebre-Egziabher and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international development policy agenda is currently dominated by the theme of poverty reduction. The theme has been vigorously pursued by multilateral donors, such as The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Bank, and others. Their assistance has also been tuned to pro-poor policy frameworks. Poverty, however, is understood mainly to be a rural phenomenon. This is based on the fact that rural poverty is widespread and pervasive and affects a large segment of the population since the majority of people in less developed countries reside in rural areas. There is, however, an increasing trend of urban growth and with it urban poverty all over the world. In Ethiopia urban poverty, in comparison to rural poverty and national level poverty, has increased over time. This has necessitated urban poverty reduction as an important area of intervention in urban development and planning. The objective of this study is to understand the livelihood situations of the poor in big and small towns, and identify the gaps and linkages between the livelihood requirements of the poor and policies at municipal level. The study was conducted in nine cities and towns of the country, including the capital city.

Book excerpt: This strategic paper discusses Ethiopia’s growth and transformation plan (GTP) for the periods 2010/2011 and 2014/2015. The basis for the GTP has been the policy matrix, which is the benchmark placed in the government's existing Welfare Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) System since 1996. The M&E system provides the government with reliable mechanisms to measure the efficiency of those government actions and the effectiveness of public policies in achieving the objectives stated in the GTP. The paper discusses the structure and legal framework of the policy matrix.

Book Coordinating National Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers and the Millennium Development Goals

Download or read book Coordinating National Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers and the Millennium Development Goals written by Magdalena Zettl and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - Topic: International Organisations, grade: 1.4, , language: English, abstract: Poverty reduction strategy papers (PRSPs) are claimed to be the 'crucial link' between the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on the global level and poverty reduction and growth strategies on the nation level as PRSPs incorporate more and more MDG goals and indicators. Ethiopia, a low-income country in Sub-Saharan Africa, is used as a case study as it has not only made significant advancements in terms of achieving the MDG goals since 2000 but has also made extensive use of PRSPs. Ethiopia has already issued its third generation of PRSPs (2002; 2006; 20011), including an interim PRSP in 2000. The essay analyzes how well MDG 2 'Primary Universal Education' and MDG 5 'Maternal Health' have been absorbed into Ethiopia's PRSPs. Findings confirm that PRSPs are a crucial means to implement MDGs within national policies and programs. Moreover, the study hints to how different processes of MDG incorporation into PRSPs influence the achievement of the respective MDGs on the national level. PRSPs have to be given considerable importance in the post- 2015 agenda; however, a revision of PRSPs is urgently needed to compensate PRSP's criticism and its lack in adhering to some of its most crucial principles, which play a significant role in the post 2015 agenda.

Book Structural change and poverty reduction in Ethiopia Economy wide analysis of the evolving role of agriculture

Download or read book Structural change and poverty reduction in Ethiopia Economy wide analysis of the evolving role of agriculture written by Dorosh, Paul and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores these issues for Ethiopia utilizing an economy-wide computable general equilibrium (CGE) model based on a detailed social accounting matrix (SAM). We present the results of four alternative investment scenarios -- faster investment in i) cities; ii) crop agriculture; iii) the rural non-farm sector and agro-industry; and iv) livestock. The simulations suggest that investments in cities generate faster economic growth and structural transformation. However, given the large share of the population with incomes linked to agriculture and the rural economy, investments in the rural economy are likely to continue to be more pro-poor than urban public investments through the mid-2020s. After the mid-2020s, investments in cities become more pro-poor. In short, though rapid economic growth and structural transformation have diminished the relative importance of the agricultural sector in Ethiopia’s economy, continued public investments in agriculture and the broader agri-food system remain crucial for equity and poverty alleviation in Ethiopia, as well as for reducing food import dependency.

Book excerpt: This paper presents a Joint Staff Advisory Note on the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia’s Poverty Reduction Strategy. Excessive domestic bank financing of the budget deficit could crowd out the private sector, increase pressure on reserve and inflation targets, and, given the already high levels of domestic debt, increase vulnerability to macroeconomic shocks. Public infrastructure investment recently increased substantially despite the lack of sound cost-benefit analysis. The strong pro-poor emphasis of government expenditure is paying off in terms of improvements in education and provision of health services.

Book Rural Development Strategy Review of Ethiopia

Download or read book Rural Development Strategy Review of Ethiopia written by OECD and published by Org. for Economic Cooperation & Development. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing rural development is key for Ethiopia's growth process. A series of government-led structural reforms have contributed to sustained growth in the country over the last two decades as well as to considerable poverty reduction in rural areas. However, Ethiopia faces critical challenges it will need to overcome to meet the needs of a growing rural population. In practice, this will require updating the existing rural development strategy in order to better integrate the interaction of rural and urban areas. Policy approaches that account for the fast urbanisation process experienced in the country will therefore be key to improving the well-being of rural populations and promoting national growth. This report takes a spatial approach to study Ethiopia's rural development strategies. It highlights the need to develop stronger and more functional linkages between rural and urban areas. As such, the development of intermediary cities and small urban centres provides large scope for inclusive rural transformation. The report is the result of rigorous analysis, and extensive consultations with national and international stakeholders. It identifies some of the key challenges faced by rural areas and provides a series of recommendations to enhance Ethiopia's rural development strategies.
