Download or read book The Spatial and Economic Transformation of Mountain Regions written by Manfred Perlik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain regions are subject to a unique set of economic pressures: they act as collective enterprises which have to valorize rare resources, such as spectacular landscapes. While primarily rural in nature, they often border large cities, and the development of industries such as hydroelectric power and the rapid development of tourism can bring about sweeping socio-economic change and vast demographic alterations. The Spatial and Economic Transformation of Mountain Regions describes the socio-economic changes and spatial impacts of the last four decades, with the transformation of mountain areas held up as an example. Much of the real-world context draws on the Alps, spanning as they do the significant economies of France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Chapters address academic discourse on regional development in these mountain areas and suggest alternative approaches to the liberal-productivist societal model. This book will be essential reading for professionals, institutions, and NGOs searching for counter-models to the existing marketing approaches for peripheral areas. It will also be of interest to students of regional development, economic geography, environmental studies, and industrial economics.

Download or read book Balancing the Commons in Switzerland written by Tobias Haller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balancing the Commons in Switzerland outlines continuity and change in the management of common-pool resources such as pastures and forests in Switzerland. The book focusses on the differences and similarities between local institutions (rules and regulations) and forms of commoners’ organisations (civic communities and corporations) which have managed common property for several centuries and have shaped the cultural landscapes of Switzerland. At the core of the book are five case studies from the German, French and Italian speaking regions of Switzerland. Beginning in the late medieval ages and focussing on the transformative periods in the 19th and 20th Century, it traces the internal and external political, economic and societal changes and examines what impact these changes had on commoners. It goes beyond the work of Robert Netting and Elinor Ostrom, who discussed Swiss commons as a unique case of robustness, by analysing how local commoners reacted to, but also shaped changes by adapting and transforming common property institutions. Thus, the volume highlights how institutional changes in the management of the commons on the local level are embedded in the public policies of the respective cantons, and the state, which generates a high heterogeneity and an actual laboratory situation. It shows the very different ways that local collective organisations and their members have followed in order to cope with the loss of value of the commons and the increased workload for maintaining common property management. Providing insightful case studies of commons management, this volume delivers theoretical contributions and lessons to be learned for the commons worldwide. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the commons, natural resource management and agricultural development.
Download or read book Problems of the Agricultural Development of Less Favoured Areas in Europe written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-03 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems of the Agricultural Development of Less-Favoured Areas in Europe is a collection of papers from a symposium of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and Food and Agriculture Organization held in Geneva on May 22-26, 1978. This collection of papers covers European countries with areas where agricultural development is limited. This book defines less-favored agricultural areas as those places where there is limited agricultural development, of different sizes and economic and social importance. These areas are also defined as suffering serious deterioration of the natural environment and of economic and social activities. This book then presents country reports covering problem areas in Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Finland, France, and Germany. In reviewing each of these countries, and other countries as well, the text presents each government's objectives concerning the rural areas, the actual strategies and policies pursued by the state, and the problems encountered when implementing these policies. This text also gives the methodologies used in evaluating these programs. This book can prove useful for government officials and ministries dealing with the agricultural sector, heads of volunteer organizations dealing with countryside development, and academicians in political science and developmental planning.
