The last 12 months have been marked by more than usual activity in the development and use of such lamps; several new patterns have been put on the market; other patterns are being developed; old models have been improved; and much interest in the performance of the lamps has been shown by mine operators. Reports from mines where the lamps are being tried indicate that the men prefer portable electric lamps to safety lamps, and in at least one State the use of portable electric lamps in coal mines has been authorized by law. Therefore it seems reasonable to believe that the movement toward a general adoption of portable electric lamps, especially in gaseous mines, has begun and that the number in use will gradually increase. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Approved Electric Lamps for Miners When small electric bulbs, with their clear, white light, and small electric storage batteries became available, the advantage of com bining these elements for a miner's lamp seemed manifest. The com bination looked simple and safe, but was soon found to have ele ments of danger and weakness peculiar to itself. The Bureau of Mines showed, in 1911, that the breaking of a miniature electric bulb in an inflammable mixture of gas and air might ignite the mixture, so that only the fragile glass of the lamp bulb might stand between the miner and injury or death. There was also a possibility that sparks from the small battery would ignite gas, and the accidental spilling of the contents of a battery on the miner's clothing or skin was a possible source of injury. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Safety Lamps and Colliery Explosions The fearful explosions which are continually occurring in various parts of the world, notably that of the Universal Colliery in South Wales, the Fraterville coal-mine in Tennessee on the r9th of last May, and lastly the one at the Fernie No. A tunnel workings of the Crow's Nest coal field, on the 22nd of May, about p.m., are sufficient in themselves to cause those who have the charge of mines which give out firedamp, as well as those who have money invested in them, to seriously consider in what way this risk may be lessened, if not almost totally prevented. It is suggested by the newspaper reports on the Fernie disaster, that the explosion originated from blasting in the coal. Similarly it was also suggested that the explosion at the Universal Colliery, Senghenydd, was caused in a similar way, but in the latter case only one witness could be found to suggest that an explosive had originated the disaster, though many witnesses proved that it could not have thus originated, and that it was in all probability caused by a totally different cause, and in a totally different part of the mine. The other cause and in all probability tbc true one, was the failure of a safety lamp to prevent the flame inside the lamp igniting the firedamp outside. When passing between two charcoal points, its duration renders it the most splendid source of light which is under the command of art. When the poles of a powerful battery are gradually separated after contact, the discharge takes place through an interval which increases with the heating of the air by the ignited charcoal. With the original battery of the Royal Institution of plates, the discharge passed through four inches of air; and with the constant battery of 70 cells the flame is much more volumi nous, and extends to the distance of one inch.
