Download or read book Pot for Profit written by Joseph Mello and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has experienced a dramatic shift in attitudes towards cannabis use from the 1970s, when only 12% of Americans said that they thought that cannabis should be legal, to today. What once had been a counterculture drug supplied for the black market by socially marginal figures like drug smugglers and hippies has become a big business, dominated by a few large corporations. Pot for Profit, traces the cultural, historical, political, and legal roots of these changing attitudes towards cannabis. The book also showcases interviews with dispensary owners, bud tenders, and other industry employees about their experience working in the legal cannabis industry, and cannabis reform activists working towards legalization. Mello argues that embracing the profit potential of this drug has been key to the success of cannabis reform, and that this approach has problematic economic and racial implications. The story of cannabis reform shows that neoliberalism may not be an absolute barrier to social change, but it does determine the terrain on which these debates must occur. When activists capitulate to these pressures, they may make some gains, but those gains come with strings attached. This only serves to reinforce the totalizing power of the neoliberal ethos on American life. The book concludes by meditating on what, if anything, can be done to move the cannabis legalization movement back onto a more progressive track.

Book Guide to Grow Marijuana Business Steps to Earn Profit in First Year of Business

Download or read book Guide to Grow Marijuana Business Steps to Earn Profit in First Year of Business written by S. Mahajan and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pot dash for unheard of wealth is in full effect, dictated by which part of the country you live in. For those around the west coast, cannabis keeps on being decriminalized and legitimized for sporting use across the whole Pacific Rim, with the rejection of California -- in spite of the fact that it seems like 2016 might be the season enactment passes in the country's most crowded state. Alongside marijuana authorization has come both for government and individual interests, significant benefit. Until this point, Washington and Co have seen much more than $200 million in charge income complete state coffers, and those that been able to get business permitting and get in the game have improved lawful business sectors. This isn't to imply that that it hasn't been an uneven street, however as a full assemblage of work, the legitimization test gives off an impression of being giving promising outcomes.

Book How to Profit from Legal Marijuana

Download or read book How to Profit from Legal Marijuana written by Sws Inc and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans spend roughly $42bn annually on legal and illegal marijuana. Their appetite is almost certain to increase as it becomes easier to legally access the drug and the industry continues to promote pot as compatible with a healthy adult life.In California alone, tens of thousands of farms grow the plant, which is increasingly processed into gorgeously packaged vape pens and edibles marketed to customers outside the core stoner demographic of young men. Today, seniors are the fastest-growing group of marijuana users in the US.The future looks very green indeed. But since New Year's Day 2014, when Colorado opened the world's first regulated recreational marijuana market, the business climate for weed companies has proven immensely difficult for a range of reasons, including high taxes, rapidly changing regulations and a still robust illicit market.Besides the business challenges, America's legal marijuana industry also has to reckon with an unavoidable moral dimension. The US has been engaged in a "war on drugs" since Richard Nixon declared it in 1971. While white Americans use marijuana and other drugs at roughly equal rates to African Americans and Latinos, in virtually every respect, racial minorities have been disproportionately incarcerated and otherwise punished for involvement with drugs, including selling marijuana. In addition, marginalized groups - Aids patients, disabled people, veterans - who championed legalization when it was far riskier to do so now find themselves ill-equipped to compete against well-capitalized corporate refugees looking to jump on the bandwagon. One company, Acreage Holdings, which closed on $119m in investment capital this summer, has enlisted the former Republican speaker of the House John Boehner to help it navigate the market. Boehner has never smoked pot - "he hasn't felt the need or inclination", according to a spokesperson - and he declared himself "unalterably opposed" to legalization when he was in office...

Book excerpt: "Greg Campbell is just about the last person you'd suspect of growing pot in his basement. A few ill-fated experiences in college revealed he was a terrible stoner, and in the years since, he's not given the green stuff another thought. But his attitude changed when medical marijuana was legalized in his home state of Colorado in 2009. It set off a tsunami activity that was viewed by opposing camps as either Nirvana or the Apocalypse. Dispensaries popped up overnight, and as Greg watched the flurry, he thought: Why not me? POT OF GOLD chronicles Greg's venture into ganjapreneurealism. Along the way, he learn not only how to grow pot, but he also gained an invaluable education into the truth about marijuana's value as a medicine. Traveling from California's famed Humbolt County to the first-annual Medical Marijuana Education Expo to Oklahoma (where a man was sentenced to 93 years for growing marijuana to treat chronic arthritis), Greg unearths ignorance about pot's centuries-old therapeutic value (an ignorance the government is desperate to maintain) as well as his own personal connection to its medicinal value. Book excerpt: In the vein of Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief and Deborah Feldman's Unorthodox, journalist Emily Brady journeys into a secretive subculture--one that marijuana built. Say the words "Humboldt County" to a stranger and you might receive a knowing grin. The name is infamous, and yet the place, and its inhabitants, have been nearly impenetrable. Until now. Humboldt is a narrative exploration of an insular community in Northern California, which for nearly 40 years has existed primarily on the cultivation and sale of marijuana. It's a place where business is done with thick wads of cash and savings are buried in the backyard. In Humboldt County, marijuana supports everything from fire departments to schools, but it comes with a heavy price. As legalization looms, the community stands at a crossroads and its inhabitants are deeply divided on the issue--some want to claim their rightful heritage as master growers and have their livelihood legitimized, others want to continue reaping the inflated profits of the black market. Emily Brady spent a year living with the highly secretive residents of Humboldt County, and her cast of eccentric, intimately drawn characters take us into a fascinating, alternate universe. It's the story of a small town that became dependent on a forbidden plant, and of how everything is changing as marijuana goes mainstream.
