Book Postsecondary Education Options for Students with Intellectual Disabilities Research to Practice

Download or read book Postsecondary Education Options for Students with Intellectual Disabilities Research to Practice written by Debra Hart and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exiting high school is an exciting and tense experience for all students and families. But when students with intellectual disabilities consider what will happen next, the possibility of college is usually not promoted as a viable option. This needs to change. Receiving a college education and experiencing that very exciting time in life is as beneficial for students with intellectual disabilities as for students without. The growth that students experience in college can be measured in a number of areas, including academic and personal skill-building, employment, independence, self-advocacy, and self-confidence. For students with intellectual disabilities, this growth is also reflected in increased self-esteem when they begin to see themselves as more similar to than different from their peers without disabilities. Being part of campus life, taking classes (whether auditing or for credit), and learning to navigate a world of high expectations develops the skills needed for successful adult life. When individuals keep college in the mix of possibilities as students with intellectual disabilities explore which steps to take after high school, it makes the statement that they believe in their potential for success. This brief presents the following information about postsecondary education for students with intellectual disabilities: (1) Definitions of "postsecondary education" and "intellectual disability"; (2) An overview of postsecondary education options; and (3) Research findings on current knowledge of postsecondary education options and outcomes, with recommendations for improving access to postsecondary education. A bibliography is included. (Lists 6 web resources.).

Book Navigating the Transition from High School to College for Students with Disabilities

Download or read book Navigating the Transition from High School to College for Students with Disabilities written by Meg Grigal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Navigating the Transition from High School to College for Students with Disabilities provides effective strategies for navigating the transition process from high school into college for students with a wide range of disabilities. As students with disabilities attend two and four-year colleges in increasing numbers and through expanding access opportunities, challenges remain in helping these students and their families prepare for and successfully transition into higher education. Professionals and families supporting transition activities are often unaware of today’s new and rapidly developing options for postsecondary education. This practical guide offers user-friendly resources, including vignettes, research summaries, and hands-on activities that can be easily implemented in the classroom and in the community and that facilitate strong collaboration between schools and families. Preparation issues such as financial aid, applying for college, and other long-term planning areas are addressed in detail. An accompanying student resource section offers materials for high school students with disabilities that secondary educators, counselors, and transition personnel can use to facilitate exploration and planning discussions. Framing higher education as a possible transition goal for all students with disabilities, Navigating the Transition from High School to College for Students with Disabilities supports the postsecondary interests of more than four million public school students with disabilities.

Book Factors that Influence the Decision of Rural High School Students with Learning Disabilities to Attend Postsecondary Education

Download or read book Factors that Influence the Decision of Rural High School Students with Learning Disabilities to Attend Postsecondary Education written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that influence the decision of rural high school students identified as having learning disabilities to attend postsecondary institutions. Currently, students with a learning disability represent the largest single category of all students identified with disabilities and they also represent the largest proportion of students with disabilities who choose to attend postsecondary education. The U.S. National Council on Disabilities reports that students with disabilities in higher education represent nearly 11% of all university students compared to 89% of non-disabled peers. Moreover, less than one half of students with disabilities have indicated a desire to attend postsecondary education after high school. Evidence indicates that students from rural communities attend postsecondary education at lower rates compared to their urban and suburban peers. Research suggests that students who attend postsecondary institutions have higher levels of economic and occupational success. Prolific research has addressed the contributing factors that lead to postsecondary attendance by students with disabilities in general however, little is known about how the same factors compare specifically to students with learning disabilities from rural communities. This study explored the question: "What factors contribute to the decision of rural students with learning disabilities to attend postsecondary educational institutions?" The study employed a decision-making conceptual framework. Using a mixed methods research design, 36 surveys and 12 interviews were conducted with students with learning disabilities from rural midwestern schools regarding their postsecondary decisions. The findings from the study suggests that students with disabilities are tangentially involved in the transition process and that previously identified factors which contribute to the decision to attend postsecondary education are generally confirmed with a rural student population. However, deeper levels of participation by students, families and staff need to be promulgated to ensure that postsecondary options for students with learning disabilities are seriously considered and explored. Leadership by administrative staff is necessary to facilitate this process.

Book The Effects of Secondary Transition Program Interventions on Students with Specific Learning Disabilities Preparing for Higher Education

Download or read book The Effects of Secondary Transition Program Interventions on Students with Specific Learning Disabilities Preparing for Higher Education written by Kelly Marie Walsh and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the perceptions of secondary special education teachers and postsecondary disability coordinators regarding the academic and functional strengths or weaknesses of transition program interventions for students with specific learning disabilities preparing for higher education and during the first year in higher education. Fourteen secondary special education teachers and twelve postsecondary disability coordinators participated in a researcher-constructed survey and researcher-designed interview questions. Secondary special education teachers believed that the transition program interventions prepared students with specific learning disabilities for the demands of higher education. Strengths of students with specific learning disabilities who received transition program interventions included: postsecondary goal development, career choices, curriculum selection, strength and weakness identification, interpersonal skills, and self-management. Weaknesses of students with specific learning disabilities who received transition program interventions included: self-determination skills and knowledge of documentation. Postsecondary disability coordinators did not believe that secondary transition program interventions were preparing students with specific learning disabilities for higher education. Strengths of students with specific learning disabilities who received transition program interventions included: postsecondary goal development, study and learning strategies, career choices, strength and weakness identification, utilization of postsecondary services, and self-disclosure. Weaknesses of students with specific learning disabilities who received transition program interventions included: knowledge of legal differences and linkage to postsecondary accommodations.

Book Postsecondary Educational Opportunities for Students with Special Education Needs

Download or read book Postsecondary Educational Opportunities for Students with Special Education Needs written by Mary Ruth Coleman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-18 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decision to go to college is a big one. It signifies a transition into young adulthood and the increasing expectations for independence that can feel exciting, liberating, and daunting! For students with disabilities this transition may be even more challenging. Despite the challenges, more and more students with disabilities are attending postsecondary colleges and universities. While this is certainly encouraging, students with disabilities are less likely to successfully complete their postsecondary programs when compared with their general population peers. So, what do we do? We can learn from our successes during early education and from successful postsecondary programs, taking what we have learned and bring these lessons to scale so that fully inclusive postsecondary programs are available for all students with special education needs. This book was originally published as a special issue of European Journal of Special Needs Education.
