Book excerpt: Christian-Muslim Relations, a Bibliographical History, Volume 8 (CMR 8) covering Northern and Eastern Europe in the period 1600-1700, is a continuing volume in a general history of relations between the two faiths from the seventh century to the early 20th century. It comprises a series of introductory essays and also the main body of detailed entries which treat all the works, surviving or lost, that have been recorded. The result of collaboration between numerous leading scholars, CMR 8, along with the other volumes in this series is intended as a basic tool for research in Christian-Muslim relations. Book The Teaching and Learning of Arabic in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book The Teaching and Learning of Arabic in Early Modern Europe written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-02-13 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together the leading experts in the history of European Oriental Studies. Their essays present a comprehensive history of the teaching and learning of Arabic in early modern Europe, covering a wide geographical area from southern to northern Europe and discussing the many ways and purposes for which the Arabic language was taught and studied by scholars, theologians, merchants, diplomats and prisoners. The contributions shed light on different methods and contents of language teaching in a variety of academic, scholarly and missionary contexts in the Protestant and the Roman Catholic world. But they also look beyond the institutional history of Arabic studies and consider the importance of alternative ways in which the study of Arabic was persued. Contributors are Asaph Ben Tov, Maurits H. van den Boogert, Sonja Brentjes, Mordechai Feingold, Mercedes García-Arenal, John-Paul A. Ghobrial, Aurélien Girard, Alastair Hamilton, Jan Loop, Nuria Martínez de Castilla Muñoz, Simon Mills, Fernando Rodríguez Mediano, Bernd Roling, Arnoud Vrolijk. Book Studies on Locke Sources Contemporaries and Legacy

Download or read book Studies on Locke Sources Contemporaries and Legacy written by Sarah Hutton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-16 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Cottingham In the anglophone philosophical world, there has, for some time, been a curious relationship between the history of philosophy and contemporary philosophical - quiry. Many philosophers working today virtually ignore the history of their s- ject, apparently regarding it as an antiquarian pursuit with little relevance to their “cutting-edge” research. Conversely, there are historians of philosophy who seldom if ever concern themselves with the intricate technical debates that ll the journals devoted to modern analytic philosophy. Both sides are surely the poorer for this strange bifurcation. For philosophy, like all parts of our intellectual culture, did not come into existence out of nowhere, but was shaped and nurtured by a long tradition; in uncovering the roots of that tradition we begin see current philoso- ical problems in a broader context and thereby enrich our understanding of their signi cance. This is surely part of the justi cation for the practice, in almost every university, of including elements from the history of philosophy as a basic part of the undergraduate curriculum. But understanding is enriched by looking forwards as well as backwards, which is why a good historian of philosophy will not just be c- cerned with uncovering ancient ideas, but will be constantly alert to how those ideas pre gure and anticipate later developments.

Book Early Modern Universities

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book contains twenty essays by expert scholars of higher learning in the early modern period. Together they discuss topics that historians of universities have largely ignored: notably the extensive collaboration, and occasional conflicts, between university scholars, instructors, and administrators on the one hand, and students at academies, independent and dependent colleges, gymnasia, and Latin schools on the other. The contributions also cover a wide geographical range, covering universities, schools, academies, and the history of the book, in many European states, and Latin America"--
