Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The postgraduate community is far more complex and diverse both in its requirements and expectations of postgraduate courses than its undergraduate colleagues. This diversity of background and experience is addressed in this book, reflecting the differing needs and aspirations of postgraduate students. Each postgraduate student experiences their education with a set of challenges unique to them. The aim of Postgraduate Study in the UK: Surviving and Succeeding is to reflect some of these challenges through the lived experiences of others. The book highlights some of the difficulties that can occur when studying (such as having to interrupt due to bereavement) and offers advice on how to manage these situations. The authors use their own experiences but the advice is more general e.g. whatever your reason for interrupting, the process is explained and advice provided. Students feel they are not alone in their experiences, situations are therefore normalized and practical advice is provided on how to manage. The book is an honest account of real people s experiences, it is like asking a friend for advice knowing the response will be clear, useful and positive.

Book Approximation Theory and Methods

Download or read book Approximation Theory and Methods written by M. J. D. Powell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-03-31 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most functions that occur in mathematics cannot be used directly in computer calculations. Instead they are approximated by manageable functions such as polynomials and piecewise polynomials. The general theory of the subject and its application to polynomial approximation are classical, but piecewise polynomials have become far more useful during the last twenty years. Thus many important theoretical properties have been found recently and many new techniques for the automatic calculation of approximations to prescribed accuracy have been developed. This book gives a thorough and coherent introduction to the theory that is the basis of current approximation methods. Professor Powell describes and analyses the main techniques of calculation supplying sufficient motivation throughout the book to make it accessible to scientists and engineers who require approximation methods for practical needs. Because the book is based on a course of lectures to third-year undergraduates in mathematics at Cambridge University, sufficient attention is given to theory to make it highly suitable as a mathematical textbook at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Book How the PhD Came to Britain

Download or read book How the PhD Came to Britain written by Renate Simpson and published by Open University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of postgraduate studies and the establishment of the Ph.D. in Britain are discussed. Events leading to the introduction of the Ph.D. degree between 1917 and 1920 are traced, and Germany and America's influence on the acceptance of postgraduate education and research in Britain is addressed. An analysis of the highly developed college system peculiar to the ancient English universities is included to identify factors that delayed the introduction of the Ph.D. in Britain. Individual provincial universities are chronicled, together with Cambridge, London, Scotland, Wales, and Oxford (the first to institute the Ph.D.). In analyzing the political forces at work in the inception of the research degree, attention is directed to the vital role played by the Universities Bureau of the British Empire (predecessor of the Association of Commonwealth Universities) and the pressures exerted by government to persuade the universities to cooperate with each other in providing postgradute courses and degrees. It is concluded that the arrival of the Ph.D. at British universities symbolized the modern era of organized training in research that was conceived and nurtured in Germany and imported and commercialized by America. Book Online Postgraduate Education in a Postdigital World

Download or read book Online Postgraduate Education in a Postdigital World written by Tim Fawns and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume builds upon the premise that online learning is not separate from the social and material world, and is made up of embodied, socially-meaningful experiences. It is founded on a “postdigital” perspective in which, much more than interactions with keyboards, computer screens, hardware or software, the learning that happens on online postgraduate programmes spills out into professional and informal settings, making connections with what comes before and after any formally-scheduled tasks. Unlike other books relating to online education, this book combines a theoretical perspective, in which the digital, physical and social are all interconnected within complex educational ecologies, with a focus grounded in postgraduate practice. This focus has important implications for the kinds of students and learning that are explored in the chapters of the book. This book provides an important contribution to the knowledge of what is required to produce quality, online postgraduate programmes at the level of teachers, curriculum designers, faculty developers and policy-makers.
