Why Panama?, described the lengthy process she and Chris endured as they prepared to move to Panama upon retirement, the roller coaster of emotion involved, and the dos and donts of how to achieve this. Iris now picks up the thread and, with actually living in Panama, describes their first year of adaptation to the language and culture of a foreign country. At times funny, sometimes poignant, often perplexing, daily life is a cacophony of change in expectations. Herein lies the tale of one couple and their initial year in Panama!

Download or read book Post Card Exchange written by JD Weeks and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Golden Age of the Post Card was 1898 to around 1913. Millions of them were produced, and many think the oldest ones are the most valuable, but that is not necessarily true. There are still large numbers of them still available. Birmingham began producing them somewhere in the middle. As the automobile became available to the average person, the roads began to be so much better, and families began to travel more easily. They liked to bring home something that reminded them of their trip. They also liked to send postcards to family and friends, as they traveled farther from home. The Post Card Exchange was started in 1909 by William H. Faulkner. He first appeared in Birmingham in 1903, and apparently was a traveling salesman and roomed in a boarding house downtown. He went to work for the R.D. Burnette Cigar Company, who also had begun printing postcards locally. That is apparently about when Faulkner decided to go into the business himself."--Page 4 of cover

Download or read book Lost Adventures written by Edward Marshall Perdue and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If one wants to begin to understand the GULAG, he would read anyone of at least 131 books such as; - My twenty-two prisons and My Escape from Solovetski, 1929, by Bezonov, Eliuriai Dimitrevich - Red Gaols, a Woman's Experiences in Russian Prisons, 1935, by author did not want to be identified. - Prisoner of the OGPU, 1935, by Kitechin, George. - An Account of the Construction of the New Canal between the White Sea and the Baltic Sea, 1935, by Maxim Gorky, and 30 writers. Many people refer to the book The Gulag Archipelago, 1974, by Solzenitsyn, I., as "the" book on the GULAG partly from his experience and research thereof. The author started with a simple expression written about John W. Adkins: "He left home at an early age, and never returned home age". There was literally no information about him. Most people, familiar with my work, have been totally amazed at the amount of the information, documents, obtained by the author from the archives on one individual. After many years of work, the author did not want to leave this material to just a research project sitting on the bookshelf.
Download or read book The World in Half written by Cristina Henriquez and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-04-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "beautiful" (Chicago Sun-Times) novel from the prizewinning author of Come Together, Fall Apart and The Great Divide. Miraflores has never known her father, and until now, she’s never thought that he wanted to know her. She’s long been aware that her mother had an affair with him while she was stationed with her then husband in Panama, and she’s always assumed that her pregnant mother came back to the United States alone with his consent. But when Miraflores returns to the Chicago suburb where she grew up, to care for her mother at a time of illness, she discovers that her mother and father had a greater love than she ever thought possible, and that her father had wanted her more than she could have imagined. In secret, Miraflores plots a trip to Panama, in search of the man whose love she hopes can heal her mother—and whose presence she believes can help her find the pieces of her own identity that she thought were irretrievably lost. What she finds is unexpected, exhilarating, and holds the power to change the course of her life completely. In gorgeous, shimmering prose, Cristina Henríquez delivers a triumphant and heartbreaking first novel: the story of a young woman reconciling an existence between two cultures and confronting a life of hardship with an endless capacity to learn, love, and forgive.
