Book excerpt: The objective of the project reported in this paper, was to obtain a data set of post-yield behaviour of composite slab-on-girder bridges and to study the post-yield redistribution of the longitudinal positive and negative moments. Several experiments were performed to determine the post-yield response of a 1/3 scale three-span continuous composite concrete slab, steel girder bridge model. The bridge had a concrete deck supported by four steel girders. Four different load cases were performed; load cases 1 and 4 applied the loads to an outer girder and load cases 2 and 3 to an inner girder. In load cases 1 and 2 the load was applied to an end span, whilst in load cases 3 and 4 two point loads were applied to the previously unloaded spans and the previously loaded end span was not tied down, thus reducing the bridge to a two span bridge with an overhanging span. Under all load cases, the bridge did not develop either general or local collapse mechanisms. This indicates that the post-yield behaviour can be used to enhance the theoretical load carrying capacity of this type of bridge. Traditional elastic analysis methods of calculating the division of the equilibrium moment into positive and negative moment components are not valid when the flexural stiffnesses are different for positive and negative moments and the negative moments are consequently overestimated. Quasiplastic analysis, ignoring strain compatibility, is more appropriate, using the relevant yield moment at both the positive and negative moment sections was sufficient to permit the sections to develop over 90 percent of the calculated plastic capacities. Book excerpt: This report documents and presents results of a study to determine time-dependent behavior and relevant design criteria for simple-span precast, prestressed bridge girders made continuous. A questionnaire was used to determine current practice. Creep and shrinkage tests of steam-cured concrete loaded at an early age were made. Computer simulations were used to investigate the effects of time-dependent material behavior and variation in design parameters on the effective continuity for live load plus impact. The findings suggest that positive moment connections in the diaphragms at the piers are not required and provide no structural advantages. The findings also suggest that effective continuity for live load plus impact can vary from 0 to 100% dependent on the design parameters and timing of construction. Computer analyses were also used to determine an upper limit for the amount of negative moment reinforcement over the supports to insure full moment redistribution and attainment of maximum bridge strength. New computer programs were developed for simplified analysis to determine time-dependent effects and service moments. Recommendations for design procedures were presented and design examples given.
