Book Gender and Land Tenure in the Context of Disaster in Asia

Download or read book Gender and Land Tenure in the Context of Disaster in Asia written by Kyoko Kusakabe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of gender and development studies, disaster and land tenure policy. It is well known that women generally have weaker claims to land. But how does that translate to increased vulnerability during disaster? Using case studies from Asia, this book argues that land tenure is a key factor in mitigating the impact of disasters on women. The scale and frequency of disasters have been increasing in recent decades due to human impact on the landscape and climate. Unsustainable farming and land management systems have increased environmental risks and social vulnerabilities. However, around the world the costs of disasters are disproportionately borne by women, due largely to their reduced mobility and lack of control over assets. In post-disaster settings, women’s vulnerabilities increase due to gendered rescue and rehabilitation practices. As such, a gendered approach to land rights is critical to disaster preparedness and recovery.

Book Conserving Biological Diversity in Managed Tropical Forests

Download or read book Conserving Biological Diversity in Managed Tropical Forests written by Jill M. Blockhus and published by IUCN. This book was released on 1992 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the meeting of the International Tropical Timber Organization held in Bali in 1990, ITTO adopted the target of ensuring that all tropical timber marketed internationally should, by the year 2000, come from forests that are managed sustainably. This study is an attempt to determine whether the member countries of the ITTO have a legal and administrative basis for managing their production forests in ways which will allow these forests to contribute to biological diversity conservation. It also attempts to assess the extent to which such management is already applied on the ground through member country studies. A set of guidelines on ways in which management of production forests could be improved is included.

Book People and Forest Policy and Local Reality in Southeast Asia the Russian Far East and Japan

Download or read book People and Forest Policy and Local Reality in Southeast Asia the Russian Far East and Japan written by M. Inoue and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: leading to an overall decrease in the world's forest cover. The forests of Asia, in particular, have been strongly impacted. A number of initiatives have suggested forest policy reforms, and the need for the sustainable management of forests has been widely recognized and encouraged. But because implementation of reforms at the local level has been insufficient, it is imperative that local people begin to effectively participate in forest planning and management as well as in protected-area management. The Forest Conservation Project, launched in April 1998 by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), has carried out research activities on forest strategies, including policy analysis and on-site surveys. This book gives an overview of the project's research activities in its first three-year phase (April1998-March 2001). Since viable forest strategies work best when based on the involvement of local people, this report is addressed to stakeholders in the communities of the relevant countries, including local people and authorities, community-based organizations, experts, national agencies, and international institutions.
