Book Effects of Climate Variability and Fishing on Gadid crustacean Interactions in Subarctic Ecosystems

Download or read book Effects of Climate Variability and Fishing on Gadid crustacean Interactions in Subarctic Ecosystems written by Laurinda A. Marcello and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) are a vital economic and biotic resource to many subarctic ecosystems. Their abundance varies greatly, but what causes large changes in production and early life survival is unknown. My overall goal is to improve our understanding of snow crab population dynamics during early life history stages. Chapter 1 provides background information on subarctic ecosystems, addresses possible mechanisms of population control and potential drivers of variability, describes snow crab life history, and reviews recent population trends in snow crab and their major cod predators. Chapter 2 details a regression study examining the effects of snow crab spawning stock biomass, environmental conditions, and Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) or Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) biomass on snow crab recruitment. This study compares three ecosystems: the eastern Bering Sea, the Newfoundland-Labrador Shelf, and the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. Cold ocean conditions during early life history were associated with increased snow crab recruitment or recruitment indices in all three ecosystems. However, there was no consistent observed effect of spawning stock biomass or gadid predation on subsequent recruitment. The dominant role of environmental conditions in driving snow crab recruitment highlights the importance of an ecosystem-based management approach for these stocks.

Book Status of Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio Stocks in the Gulf of St Lawrence

Download or read book Status of Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio Stocks in the Gulf of St Lawrence written by Richard Bailey and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Despite a growing importance of the snow crab fishery, particularly in the northeast New Brunswick, very few biological statistics of the snow crab population in the Gulf of St. Lawrence have been analyzed and interpreted. This document is an attempt to provide an assessment of the snow crab stocks and to orientate future work"--Introduction, page 2.

Book The Effects of Windchill Exposure on the Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio

Download or read book The Effects of Windchill Exposure on the Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio written by Jonathan James Warrenchuk and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Millions of snow crabs, 'Chionoecetes opilio, ' are aerially exposed during sorting in the annual Bering Sea commercial fishery. A laboratory experiment measured snow crab responses to windchill exposure. Crabs were exposed to 8 to 16 m/s windspeed and air temperatures from -2 to -10 C̊ for 5 minutes. Mortality, autonomy, and righting response were assessed for seven days post-treatment. Crabs experienced 40% to 100% mortality at windchill from -10 to 16 C̊. Reduced exposure time significantly reduced mortality. Autonomy was variable but pronounced below -10 C̊ windchill. The righting response was impaired after all but the least severe treatment. Estimates of mortality of discarded snow crab in 1998 were calculated from deadloss of retained crab, a windchill model, and a temperature/windspeed model. No relationship existed between catch deadloss and the windchill conditions when the crabs were caught. Mortality of non-retained snow crab was estimated at 3.6% by the windchill model and 19.6% by the temperature /windspeed model"--Leaf 3.

Book The 2021 Assessment of the Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio Stock in the Southern Gulf of St Lawrence areas 12 12E 12F and 19

Download or read book The 2021 Assessment of the Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio Stock in the Southern Gulf of St Lawrence areas 12 12E 12F and 19 written by T. J. Surette and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stock status of southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (sGSL) snow crab, Chionoecetes opilio, in 2021 is in the healthy zone based on the defined reference points for this stock, with an a commercially exploitable biomass of 80,950 t projected for 2022. The exploitation rate of the 2021 fishery was estimated at 31.5%, a relatively low value stemming from a 15% reduction in commercial biomass estimates made in response to concerns of over-estimation of stock indices during the 2019 and 2020 surveys. Fishery recruitment biomass is estimated at 62,473 t, while residual biomass was estimated at 19,144 t. Based on the harvest control rule, the commercial stock biomass index corresponds to a target exploitation rate of 40.96% resulting in a Total Allowable Catch (TAC) of 33,163 t for the 2022 fishery. Based on this catch option, a risk analysis indicates that there is a very low likelihood that the residual stock biomass would be below the limit reference point and a very high likelihood that the 2022 commercial stock biomass would be above the upper stock reference point. Mature female abundance remains high, though at lower levels than those observed in 2019 and 2020 and the population recruitment index is very high"--Abstract, page iv.
