Book Electron Positron Interactions

Download or read book Electron Positron Interactions written by B.H. Wiik and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio Recombination Lines is a comprehensive guide to the physics and observations of Radio Recombination Lines from astronomical sources. It includes the history of RRL detections, the astrophysics underlying their intensities and line shapes including topics like departures from LTE and Stark broadening, the maximum possible size of an atom, as well as detailed descriptions of the astronomical topics for which RRLs have proved to be effective tools. In addition, the appendix includes detailed physics underlying the Bohr atomic model, tables of RRL frequencies including fine structure components, techniques for calculating hydrogenic oscillator strengths, and formulas for converting telescope intensity units to astrophysical ones. Radio Recombination Lines is written for astronomers and physicists. It is also suitable as a graduate-level textbook. This softcover contains updates and corrections from the previous hardcover published in 2002. "We now have a splendid book written by two of the pioneers, M.A. Gordon of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Tucson and R.L. Sorochenko of the Lebedev Institute. In their Preface the authors say that the book was written by exchanging email. They give a fascinating account of the history of the subject, a detailed discussion of the atomic physics required for the interpretation of the observations, and describe astronomical results obtained using RRL observations for a wide range of astronomical objects."--Mike Seaton, Former President, Royal Astronomical Society, 1979-1981

Download or read book Positrons in Solids written by P. Hautojärvi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In condensed matter initially fast positrons annihilate after having reached equi librium with the surroundings. The interaction of positrons with matter is governed by the laws of ordinary quantum mechanics. Field theory and antiparticle properties enter only in the annihilation process leading to the emergence of energetic photons. The monitoring of annihilation radiation by nuclear spectroscopic methods provides valuable information on the electron-positron system which can directly be related to the electronic structure of the medium. Since the positron is a positive electron its behavior in matter is especially interesting to solid-state and atomic physi cists. The small mass quarantees that the positron is really a quantum mechanical particle and completely different from any other particles and atoms. Positron physics started about 25 years ago but discoveries of new features in its interac tion with matter have maintained continuous interest and increasing activity in the field. Nowadays it is becoming part of the "stock-in-trade" of experimental physics.

Book Currents in Astrophysics and Cosmology

Download or read book Currents in Astrophysics and Cosmology written by G. G. Fazio and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-10-28 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currents in Astrophysics and Cosmology focuses primarily on cosmic-ray physics, X-ray, gamma-ray and neutrino astronomy and cosmology, the main research areas of Professor Maurice M. Shapiro, whose 75th birthday the collection of articles celebrates. Professor Shapiro is internationally distinguished for his contributions to the development of cosmic-ray physics. Each chapter is written by a leading scientist in the field. The scope extends from the inner solar system to distant radio galaxies. The book is ideal for graduate students and scientists working in cosmic-ray astrophysics. This valuable survey will be welcomed not only for its articles by world-renowned scientists but also for its coverage of many topics in high-energy astrophysics, the combination of which makes the book unique.

Book Electron Positron Physics at the Z

Download or read book Electron Positron Physics at the Z written by M. G. Green and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive summary of studies of the Z boson in electron positron interactions. The results that have been obtained have achieved unprecedented accuracy and have firmly established the Electroweak Standard Model as the cornerstone of our current understanding of modern particle physics. The book introduces the background to the Standard Model and the role of the Z boson and describes briefly the accelerators and experiments involved in these results. The five main chapters deal with the detailed measurements of the electroweak parameters of the Z, the study of QCD, heavy quark physics, tau lepton physics and the search for new particles. Each chapter ends with a summary and outlook to prospects of future accelerators. Most of the results are from the first six years running at the first phase of electron positron collider, LEP, at energies corresponding to the Z mass, but results from the SLAC Linear Collider and some new results at higher energies are also included.
