Book Professional Development on Positive Behavior Intervention Supports PBIS and Its Implications for School Culture

Download or read book Professional Development on Positive Behavior Intervention Supports PBIS and Its Implications for School Culture written by Erika Tobia and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to ameliorate the American educational system, the federal government authorized new legislation under Race to the Top in 2011. One of the legislation’s directives was the connection of student accountability to teacher and principal evaluation. Educators across the country examined existing practices including those governing traditional forms of professional development. Their findings emphasized the need for effective and high quality professional development. Research indicates traditional leadership preparation programs do not provide school leaders with explicit tools to create change in the area of school culture, but there is no agreement in the field regarding methodology. Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS), a comprehensive prevention program, is a research-based framework, which provides professional development for school leaders concerning school culture. Moreover, school leaders across the country have chosen the PBIS platform to help build a contextual, framework in order to develop and maintain a positive school culture. This qualitative research study explored the professional development received by thirteen New York City principals in Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS), and presented their responses. All of the principals, according to the data collected, stated the PBIS professional development they received influenced their own leadership practice causing them to develop a different approach to staff and students. In addition, all of the school leaders asserted that PBIS implementation had a positive influence on school culture. These findings may be useful for school leaders seeking to change school culture through the use of a researched based systematic framework like PBIS.

Book Handbook of Positive Behavior Support

Download or read book Handbook of Positive Behavior Support written by Wayne Sailor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-02 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolution in working with difficult students began during the 1980s, with a dramatic shift away from dependence on simply punishing bad behavior to reinforcing desired, positive behaviors of children in the classroom. With its foundation in applied behavior analysis (ABA), positive behavior support (PBS) is a social ecology approach that continues to play an increasingly integral role in public education as well as mental health and social services nationwide. The Handbook of Positive Behavior Support gathers into one concise volume the many elements of this burgeoning field and organizes them into a powerful, dynamic knowledge base – theory, research, and applications. Within its chapters, leading experts, including the primary developers and researchers of PBS: (1) Review the origins, history, and ethical foundations of positive behavior support. (2) Report on applications of PBS in early childhood and family contexts, from Head Start to foster care to mental health settings to autism treatment programs. (3) Examine school-based PBS used to benefit all students regardless of ability or conduct. (4) Relate schoolwide PBS to wraparound mental health services and the RTI (response to intervention) movement. (5) Provide data and discussion on a variety of topics salient to PBS, including parenting issues, personnel training, high school use, poorly functioning schools, and more. This volume is an essential resource for school-based practitioners as well as clinicians and researchers in clinical child, school, and educational psychology.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlling Our Children: Hegemony and Deconstructing the Positive Behavioral Intervention Support Model represents the first steps in a protest movement. It is a microscopic look into a system that educators take for granted as a positive force for children. In a thorough and detailed fashion, Thomas David Knestrict deconstructs the troubling history, development, and eventual embrace of a ubiquitous system of control that our public schools and government now mandate for use. Knestrict uses a powerful social justice lens to reconstruct the framework of a more responsive and just system of supports that result in autonomy, not scripted control. Controlling Our Children is perfect for pre-service teachers learning how to manage a classroom that fosters autonomy and an internal locus of control. It is also a perfect book for a graduate-level course in discipline discourse or disability studies. This book is for anyone who is at all worried about imposed systems of control that hinder the development of free will, freedom of choice, and personal autonomy in an age of false news, political manipulation, and control.
