Book excerpt: Residents and visitors strolling through the streets of Portsmouth may wonder about the changes the city has seen over the years. Though much of Portsmouth's charm comes from an appearance that little has been altered, the community has transitioned over the centuries from rural farms to a bustling port to a modern New England city that carefully balances the best of old and new. In Then & Now: Portsmouth, authors William T. and Constance S. Warren share their collection of photographs, postcards, and maps to illustrate Portsmouth scenes of days gone by alongside contemporary photographs. Readers will enjoy the country seaport town that Portsmouth was and look at the urban metropolis that it has become. From Market Square and its earliest merchants to the port that gave the town its name, the authors' extensive research will bring to light fascinating stories for every reader, from the newcomer to the fifth-generation locals.

Book Around Portsmouth in the Victorian Era

Download or read book Around Portsmouth in the Victorian Era written by James Dolph and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1997-04-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art and business of photography arrived in Portsmouth in 1840. Beginning with the sale of daguerreotypes and progressing to the creation of studio cards and stereoscopic views, photography studios prospered and grew throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century. Among the most successful of these studios in the Portsmouth area were those operated by the Davis brothers--Lewis and Charles--from 1856 to 1903. The Davis brothers began by creating and selling portrait photographs, and their business evolved over the years to include the sale of stereoscopic views. The Seacoast's healthy tourist market demanded stereopticon images of Portsmouth, New Castle, Rye, the Hamptons, Kittery, York, and the Isles of Shoals, and the Davis brothers responded with a large and varied selection of such images.

Book excerpt: Portsmouth combines historic and contemporary photographs with excerpts from An Old Town by the Sea by revered essayist Thomas Bailey Aldrich. Together, the photographs and the essay reveal a place that began as a small port town that evolved into a thriving city on the New Hampshire seacoast. Aldrich recalls the day when President George Washington visited Portsmouth and said he was not much impressed by the architecture. Today, Smestad shows the beauty of this city and its New England charm. Although much has changed, there is still of hint of old Portsmouth downtown, on the waterfront, and in Strawberry Banke.

Book excerpt: The major port and popular tourist city of Portsmouth has a rich heritage which is uniquely reflected in this fascinating new compilation, carefully selected from private collections. Contrasting a selection of over eighty archive images alongside full-colour modern photographs, this book delves into the changing faces, buildings and streets of Portsmouth and Southsea. The photographs in this absorbing collection enable the reader to explore the differences that passing time, wartime bombing, the rise in car use and redevelopment has wrought on the streets, neighbourhoods, businesses, houses and, not least, the people of Portsmouth. Archive images, including rare Victorian views and some remarkable Edwardian street scenes by the Barkshire Brothers, are compared and contrasted with similar views taken today or, in some cases, in the interim, placing often unrecognisable scenes in their context of place and time. Inspiring fond memories in some and revealing the Portsmouth of yesteryear to others, this volume will appeal to all who know this ever-changing city.
