If some day another edition is published, it will be found, I hope, to have profited by all the valuable remarks that may have been made concerning this; or, if not by all, at least by all that become known to me by courtesy or chance or search. Emendations Although the error which it contains is not vital, my statement of the steps by which the Torrigiani bust (it is not a mask) was transferred from private to public ownership (page 38) should have conformed exactly with the historical data in the footnote on page 39. I avail myself of this opportunity to mention by the way a very recent 'discovery' described by Mr. P. G. Konody in The Illustrated London News for July 1, 1911; this 'discovery' illustrates various affirmations of mine, but especially some of those on the manufacture of death-masks in chapter iv. In dealing with Giotto's Dante it behoved me to lay greater stress on the difference in colouring of Kirkup's original sketch (in his Convivio) and of the Arundel print or its immediate source; fortunately both the sketch and the print are now reproduced in fascimiles so accurate that experts in evidence may be able to account fully for the obvious discrepancy by comparing the two reproductions with each other and with the testimonies quoted in chapters ix, xiii, and xiv. The focus us not primarily upon stylistic influences or attempts to imitate Dante's manner of writing, but rather on the different guises in which the enormous presence of Dante has made itself felt, and how that presence has affected some of the central concerns of the poets in question. The poets considered are Shelley, Byron, Browning, Rossetti, Yeats, Pound and Eliot. In addition to analysing the way Dante is approached by these poets in their major poetry, Dr Ellis also discusses relevant critical works: Shelley's Defence of Poetry, Pound's The Spirit of Romance and Yeats' A Vision. The critical survey is unified by the attempt to show certain recurrent preoccupations in the work of these writers, such as the need to define a tradition in which Dante is a necessary forerunner. Ellis also shows that Dante has been read in a very partial way by these poets and the images of him which emerge in their works are inevitably varied and contradictory.

The situation of the sources, however, is complicated: On Giotto's life, there are – on the one hand – biographical accounts from the mid-fourteenth century onwards that responded to various ideological requirements (patriotism, humanism, Renaissance ideology, cult of the artist); on the other, there is extensive documentary material from Giotto's lifetime, which seems to reflect less the biography of an artist than that of a bourgeois businessman resolutely climbing the social ladder. The present volume focuses on this second aspect of the Giotto figure's double life relating it to the form of existence of the pre-modern artist. Vol. 2: Works The paintings examined and contextualised in this volume are those secured for Giotto through early written sources. These sources also help to reconstruct the sequence of his works and artistic inventions as is plausible in the context of media culture in the decades around and after 1300: while Giotto was spiritually and intellectually formed in the sphere of the Florentine Dominicans, his artistic path began in Rome in the shadow of the Curia. The breakthrough to his own artistic concept came immediately before and during his work in Padua. In addition to prominent churchmen, ecclesiastical institutions, and the King of Naples, his clients were predominantly members of Italy's urban and financial elites. The adoption and further development of his inventions by other - especially Sienese - painters pressured him in his later years to try new approaches again. Vol. 3: Survival Giotto is considered by many to be the founder of modern painting. This thesis is discussed and modified in the present volume on an empirical basis. What emerges is that Giotto's impact cannot be reduced simply to the introduction of the study of nature. Rather, his art was involved in the development of pictorial idioms that were attuned to the skills and interests of their audiences. The new approaches in his painting contributed in particular to the possibility of examining and communicating psychological, narrative and allegorical content of great complexity outside the media of language and text, which not only changed the face of European art but certainly contributed to the intellectual opening of Western societies.

By the nineteenth century the two fields had become inseparably linked. While the art historical scholarship of this period has been widely studied, its restoration practices have received less scrutiny—until now. This book charts the intersections between art history and conservation in the treatment of Italian Renaissance paintings in nineteenth-century Europe. Initial chapters discuss the restoration of works by Giotto and Titian, framed by the contemporary scholarship of art historians such as Jacob Burckhardt, G. B. Cavalcaselle, and Joseph Crowe that was redefining the earlier age. Subsequent chapters recount how paintings conservation was integrated into museum settings. The narrative uses period texts, unpublished archival materials, and historical photographs in probing how paintings looked at a time when scholars were writing the foundational texts of art history, and how contemporary restorers were negotiating the appearances of these works. The book proposes a model for a new conservation history, object focused yet enriched by consideration of a wider cultural horizon.
