Book excerpt: The dialect of North-East Scotland, one of the most distinctive and best preserved in the country, survives as both a proudly maintained mark of local identity and the vehicle for a remarkable regional literature. The present study, after placing the dialect in its historical, geographical and social context, discusses in some detail a selection of previous accounts of its distinctive characteristics of phonology and grammar, showing that its shibboleths have been well recognised, and have remained consistent, over a long period. Passages of recorded speech are then examined, with extensive use of phonetic transcription. Finally, a representative selection of written texts, dating from the eighteenth century to the present and illustrating a wide variety of styles and genres, are presented with detailed annotations. A full glossary is also included. This study clearly demonstrates both the individuality of the dialect and the richness of the local culture of which it is an integral part.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The folklore of the north-east has provided a rich tapestry for the tales within; from Celtic and Pictish origins meet witches, selkies, smugglers, fairies, monsters, despicable rogues, riddles and heroes. Tragic events, spellbinding characters, humour, romance and clever minds are bound together by two well-established storytellers living and working in the city and shire of Aberdeen. Some of the tales in this collection are based on historical fact while others are embedded in myth and legend. All the stories are set against the backdrop of this lovely and varied landscape; the silver city and surrounding farm lands, the forested and mountainous terrain through which the River Dee flows, the rolling, gentler land surrounding the meandering River Don and the beautiful but sometimes forbidding Aberdeenshire coastline. Sheena and Grace have both been inspired in their storytelling and singing by the traveller, raconteur and balladeer, Stanley Robertson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Deeside: A Guide to the City of Aberdeen and the Villages, Hamlets, Districts, Castles, Mansions and Scenery of Deeside, With Notes of Antiquities, Historical and Literary Associations, Etc But, while this may be admitted, some may question whether another Guide Book is needed. Without directly contradicting this View, I may say that one who has lived a long time in a district can hardly fail to know some things - and these not always useless or uninteresting-in a manner in which they can scarcely be known to those who are only occasional visitors. I may also explain that I had become pretty familiar with most of the localities of the country, and had acquired an appreciable amount of historical and miscellaneous information about them, without ever intending to submit a book on Deeside to the public. The idea of doing so afterwards sprung up in my mind, and I must abide the result of the wisdom or folly of the venture. Whatever may be the fate of the book, it has been a pleasure to me to revisit the old familiar scenes and to look up those with which I was previously not so well acquainted. There are few places comprised in the work that I have not visited and inspected for myself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fishermen Against the Kaiser

Download or read book Fishermen Against the Kaiser written by Douglas d'Enno and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British fishermen are among the unsung heroes of the First World War. The conflict with Germany had an immediate and enduring impact on their lives and livelihood. They were immediately caught up in the sea war against the Kaisers navy, confronting the threats presented by the submarines, minelayers, gunboats and capital ship of the High Seas Fleet. Often they found themselves thrust into strange, dangerous situations, which put their lives at risk and tested to the limit their bravery and skill as seamen. This is their fascinating story. For the first time in this two-volume study Douglas dEnno provides a comprehensive and lasting record of the services rendered by the fishermen and their vessels, both under naval control and on their own account. His pioneering history shows the full extent of their contribution to the British war effort, from minesweeping and submarine detection to patrol, escort and counterattack duties. The areas of action were not limited to the home waters of the Channel, the North Sea and the Western Approaches but ranged as far as the Arctic and the Mediterraneans Aegean and Adriatic seas. Extraordinary stories are recounted here of the hazards of minesweeping, battles with U-boats, decoy missions, patrols, blockades, rescues and capture by the enemy. First-hand accounts make up the essence of the material. Reports from the leading trade journals, specialist literature and personal manuscripts vividly recall the fishermens experiences and the hardships and dangers they faced throughout the war.

Book excerpt: This volume, the earlier of the two-volume official History of Aberdeen, provides a comprehensive picture of the development of the two historic burghs of Old Aberdeen and New Aberdeen over their first seven centuries, from 1100 to 1800. As early as the 14th century, Aberdeen was: recognized as one of the 'four great towns of Scotland'. Early settlement, the growing townscape and social change over the centuries are all traced. Aberdeen's contacts with the sea and other towns overseas and its economy and politics, both local and national, are assessed. And Aberdonians themselves, the vital forces behind the history of the two burghs, are highlighted: their faith and culture, homes and health, and their education and pastimes are all rediscovered.
