Download or read book Government Foreign Policy Towards the United States HC 695 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Foreign Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reports finds that the Coalition Government has developed in public a more mature and measured relationship with the US, although there has been no fundamental change in the nature of the tie. The Committee declares the relationship to be in good health. In particular, the Committee said that it was not aware of any evidence that the House of Commons vote in August 2013 against potential military action in Syria had damaged the UK's relationship with the US. Rather, the Committee concluded that the episode illustrated general features of the UK-US relationship, namely that developments in the UK could influence US policy; and that the underlying tie was resilient. Today's publication follows up a report produced by the previous Foreign Affairs Committee at the end of the last Parliament, which recommended that the UK Government should adopt a more hard-headed and less deferential approach to the US. The Coalition Government seemed to have taken up this recommendation. The Committee criticises the UK Government's poor provision of information about the UK-US Joint Strategy Board, which was created during President Obama's State Visit to the UK in May 2011. Among strategic issues that it considered, the Committee agreed with the Government that the proposed EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) could have significant positive strategic impact for the UK and the transatlantic relationship.

Download or read book Adapting the Foreign and Commonwealth Office s global estate to the modern world written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-02-11 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Foreign and Commonwealth Office lacks a clear strategy and comprehensive data to manage its overseas estate effectively. It is taking positive steps to adapt its properties to new global challenges but has not achieved value for money in the management of its estate as a whole. Without a clear framework to assess the estate's performance, it is difficult to evaluate the Department's progress. The Department has recently appointed an estates specialist as Director of Estates and Security who is developing a new strategy which should help secure improved value for money in the future. There are several factors, such as changing political issues, security restrictions and exchange rate pressures, which add to the complexity of managing the global estate. But lack of adequate financial and management information about the estate hampers good decision making on efficient use of space and the identification of surplus assets for potential sale. The management of projects to improve the estate could be better: a third of the projects that the NAO analysed exceeded their initial approved budget by over 10 per cent and two-thirds were delivered late. The total cost overrun since 2002 is approximately £57 million, against a total spent on capital projects of £250 million. The FCO does not always use space in its posts efficiently. Over half of the posts that responded to the NAO's survey have unused office space or staff accommodation. The FCO could do more to promote the use of its overseas estate by other UK government organisations where feasible.
Download or read book Tipping Point written by Helen Ramscar and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain is facing big security challenges in the 2020s. The decade to come will not be as favourable as the two past decades. For a country as 'globalised' as Britain, security challenges cover a wide spectrum - from terrorism, international crime and cyber attack through to the prospects of war in its own continent or even, again, for its own survival. Brexit has entered these equations and turned them into a political tipping point, from which there is no hiding and no turning back. Tipping Point looks at the immediate and long-term security challenges Britain faces - from security and foreign policy to the crisis of liberal democracy - as well as Britain's security capabilities.
Download or read book International Tax Primer written by Brian J. Arnold and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Tax Primer provides an introduction to the policies that countries seek to advance with their international tax rules, with numerous examples drawn from the practices of both developed and developing countries. This third edition has been expanded substantially, due to the major developments that have occurred since the second edition of this indispensable resource appeared in 2004 – not least the fact that innumerable smalland medium-sized firms, as well as individuals, now engage in cross-border transactions that cause them and their tax advisers to confront international tax issues on a regular basis. Moreover, as the countries of the world have become increasingly integrated economically, the importance of the major issues that a country must confront in designing its international tax rules and in coordinating those rules with the tax systems of its trading partners has mushroomed. The book strikes a balance between the specific and the general by illustrating the funda mental principles and structure of international tax with frequent reference to actual practice in a variety of countries. Coverage includes the following: • role of the tax adviser in planning international transactions; • taxation of residents on foreign income and of non-residents on domestic income; • mechanisms used to mitigate the risks to taxpayers of international double taxation; • transfer pricing rules to prevent the avoidance of tax by multinational corporations; • anti-avoidance measures dealing with tax havens, treaty shopping, and other offensive tax planning activities; • overview and analysis of the provisions of bilateral tax treaties and the OECD and UN • Model Treaties on which they are generally based; and • challenges posed by taxation of income derived from the digital economy. New material in the third edition includes analysis of the OECD’s initiative against base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS), tax aspects of hybrid entities and financial instruments, and taxation of fees for technical services as proposed under the UN Model Treaty. Although of greatest value to tax practitioners and government officials confronting interna tional tax for the first time, this book is sure to continue in use by tax professionals at every level of experience and on a worldwide basis.

Download or read book Strategy development in humanitarian NGO positioning and the rise of FCOs written by Julian J. Rossig and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As competition over donations for humanitarian aid projects intensifies, traditional German NGOs come under additional pressure from an unlikely side: A new breed of aggressively expanding market entrants monopolizes distribution channels, thus obtaining a significant market share. Lacking any own aid projects, however, these organizations distribute the raised donations to traditional NGOs. This unusual set-up leaves NGO executives searching for a strategic response: While the new competitor’s funding is clearly a welcome treat, the competitive aspect is much less pleasing. This study revisits contemporary approaches to positioning strategy formulation, deducing a systematization of fundraising campaign organizations (FCOs) and offering helpful recommendations for NGO executives.

Download or read book OECD Development Co operation Peer Reviews United Kingdom 2020 written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) conducts reviews of the individual development co‐operation efforts of DAC members once every five to six years. DAC peer reviews critically examine the overall performance of a given member, not just that of its development co‐operation agency, covering its policy, programmes and systems. They take an integrated, system‐wide perspective on the development co‐operation activities of the member under review and its approach to fragility, crisis and humanitarian assistance. The United Kingdom uses its global standing and convening power to promote an evidence-based approach to stability, inclusion and prosperity and continues to provide 0.7% of its national income as Official Development Assistance (ODA). The depth and breadth of its expertise, combined with flexible funding instruments and strong country presence, allow the United Kingdom to focus these ODA resources on developing country needs, while protecting its own longer-term national interests. Articulating a clear and comprehensive whole-of-government vision for its support to international development would allow the United Kingdom to reinforce its policy priorities and engage the public. Further measures to build effective partnerships and institutional capacity in developing countries would allow the United Kingdom to build ownership of development processes and contribute to lasting change.
