They escape by accidentally breaking into ZOAR II, a secret biosphere constructed to house the president of the United States and staff if a nuclear war were to occur, then in the 1960s. Unable to find an exit, they are trapped there for ten years, thus subject to the indictment of being absent without cause during the Vietnam War, an act punishable by death. How they survive this isolation from society, their fundamental differences on issues, and bearing a child they name Hope is the essence of this adventure. Finally, Beth and Jeff miraculously find the way out of ZOAR II. To avoid prosecution for the AWOL not of their making, they assume new identities. Seeking a second refuge, they settle in Seaside, California.

Book Jesus the Port in a Storm

Download or read book Jesus the Port in a Storm written by Betty Biank and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These poems were written in a time of post-traumatic stress. My husband had throat cancer. He underwent four years of treatment and seven surgeries to save his voice, and at times, his life. Afterward, his trauma created a time of great stress for both of us. I developed serious symptoms as well. We walked through our recovery time together under Gods loving care. Issues from our individual past came up to the surface. Our faith in God was being challenged and stretched. These prayerful poems were the ways I dealt with my feelings and experiences. Gods mighty power was made manifest in these difficult times. Book A Dictionary of Sexual Language and Imagery in Shakespearean and Stuart Literature

Download or read book A Dictionary of Sexual Language and Imagery in Shakespearean and Stuart Literature written by Gordon Williams and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-09-13 with total page 1650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing an alphabetical listing of sexual language and locution in 16th and 17th-century English, this book draws especially on the more immediate literary modes: the theatre, broadside ballads, newsbooks and pamphlets. The aim is to assist the reader of Shakespearean and Stuart literature to identify metaphors and elucidate meanings; and more broadly, to chart, through illustrative quotation, shifting and recurrent linguistic patterns. Linguistic habit is closely bound up with the ideas and assumptions of a period, and the figurative language of sexuality across this period is highly illuminating of socio-cultural change as well as linguistic development. Thus the entries offer as much to those concerned with social history and the history of ideas as to the reader of Shakespeare or Dryden.

Book Port in a Storm

    Book Details:
  • Author : George MacDonald
  • Publisher : CreateSpace
  • Release : 2015-10-28
  • ISBN : 9781518825095
  • Pages : 24 pages

Download or read book Port in a Storm written by George MacDonald and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George MacDonald (10 December 1824 - 18 September 1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle. C. S. Lewis wrote that he regarded MacDonald as his "master": "Picking up a copy of Phantastes one day at a train-station bookstall, I began to read. A few hours later," said Lewis, "I knew that I had crossed a great frontier." G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence." Elizabeth Yates wrote of Sir Gibbie, "It moved me the way books did when, as a child, the great gates of literature began to open and first encounters with noble thoughts and utterances were unspeakably thrilling." Even Mark Twain, who initially disliked MacDonald, became friends with him, and there is some evidence that Twain was influenced by MacDonald. Christian author Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) wrote in Christian Disciplines, vol. 1, (pub. 1934) that "it is a striking indication of the trend and shallowness of the modern reading public that George MacDonald's books have been so neglected." In addition to his fairy tales, MacDonald wrote several works on Christian apologetics including several that defended his view of Christian Universalism. George MacDonald's best-known works are Phantastes, The Princess and the Goblin, At the Back of the North Wind, and Lilith, all fantasy novels, and fairy tales such as "The Light Princess," "The Golden Key," and "The Wise Woman." "I write, not for children," he wrote, "but for the child-like, whether they be of five, or fifty, or seventy-five." MacDonald also published some volumes of sermons, the pulpit not having proved an unreservedly successful venue. MacDonald also served as a mentor to Lewis Carroll (the pen-name of Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson); it was MacDonald's advice, and the enthusiastic reception of Alice by MacDonald's many sons and daughters, that convinced Carroll to submit Alice for publication. Carroll, one of the finest Victorian photographers, also created photographic portraits of several of the MacDonald children. MacDonald was also friends with John Ruskin and served as a go-between in Ruskin's long courtship with Rose La Touche. MacDonald was acquainted with most of the literary luminaries of the day; a surviving group photograph shows him with Tennyson, Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Trollope, Ruskin, Lewes, and Thackeray. While in America he was a friend of Longfellow and Walt Whitman.
