Book Aging and the Macroeconomy

Download or read book Aging and the Macroeconomy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is in the midst of a major demographic shift. In the coming decades, people aged 65 and over will make up an increasingly large percentage of the population: The ratio of people aged 65+ to people aged 20-64 will rise by 80%. This shift is happening for two reasons: people are living longer, and many couples are choosing to have fewer children and to have those children somewhat later in life. The resulting demographic shift will present the nation with economic challenges, both to absorb the costs and to leverage the benefits of an aging population. Aging and the Macroeconomy: Long-Term Implications of an Older Population presents the fundamental factors driving the aging of the U.S. population, as well as its societal implications and likely long-term macroeconomic effects in a global context. The report finds that, while population aging does not pose an insurmountable challenge to the nation, it is imperative that sensible policies are implemented soon to allow companies and households to respond. It offers four practical approaches for preparing resources to support the future consumption of households and for adapting to the new economic landscape.

Download or read book Labor Force Participation written by Federal Reserve Federal Reserve Board and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than five years after the Great Recession ended, the labor market has, by many metrics, finally shown substantial improvement. The unemployment rate is now nearly 4 percentage points below the peak reached in late 2009, and the number of nonfarm payroll jobs has returned to pre-recession levels. However, one lingering concern is the ongoing decline in the labor force participation rate and the concomitant absence of a significant rise in the percentage of the working-age population who are employed. In particular, the labor force participation rate has fallen from about 66 percent of the population in 2007 to about 63 percent over the first half of 2014, while the employment-to-population ratio currently stands at 59 percent, only about ½ percentage point above its low point in the wake of the recession.

Book Key Labor Market Indicators

Download or read book Key Labor Market Indicators written by Ina Pietschmann and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key Labor Market Indicators: Analysis with Household Survey Data is an introduction to labor market indicator analysis and a guide for analyzing household survey data using the ADePT ILO (International Labour Organization) Labor Market Indicators Module. The analytical framework and approach taken up in this book are based on the ILO’s Key Indicators of the Labour Market (KILM). KILM indicators provide a strong basis on which to address key questions related to productive employment and decent work. The ADePT ILO Labor Market Indicators Module is a powerful tool for producing and analyzing KILM indicators using household survey data. The software allows researchers and practitioners to automate data production, to minimize data production errors, and to quickly produce a wide range of labor market data from labor force surveys or other household surveys that contain labor market information. ABOUT ADePT Streamlined Analysis with ADePT Software is a series that provides academics, students, and policy practitioners with a theoretical foundation, practical guidelines, and software tools for applied analysis in various areas of economic research. ADePT Platform is a software package developed in the research department of the World Bank (see www.worldbank.org/adept). The series examines such topics as sector performance and inequality in education, the effectiveness of social transfers, labor market conditions, the effects of macroeconomic shocks on income distribution and labor market outcomes, child anthropometrics, and gender inequalities.

Book The Labor Force in Economic Development

Download or read book The Labor Force in Economic Development written by John Dana Durand and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores growth and structural change in the labor force that accompany economic development. It reports on labor force characteristics in one hundred countries around the world, a project of the Population Studies Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Based on a world-wide compilation of labor force and population statistics of censuses taken during 1946-1966, it presents previously inaccessible data on sex and age patterns of participation in economic activities, the size of the labor force in proportion to population, and changes in these areas associated with economic development. Patterns related to the level and speed of development, the structure of employment, urbanization, and age structure of population are defined. Conclusions are offered with regard to changing participation by women, young people, and the elderly. Originally published in 1976.
