Book Population Estimates for Peary Caribou and Muskox on Banks Island NT July 1982

Download or read book Population Estimates for Peary Caribou and Muskox on Banks Island NT July 1982 written by J. A. Nagy and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latour (1985) conducted a stratified strip transect aerial survey of Banks Island in 1982. We re-analyzed the data using current standard statistical methods and measured linear distances and areas using current GIS technology. The population estimates derived for Peary caribou and muskoxen during our analyses did not differ significantly from the original analyses. The area of Banks Island surveyed in 1982 was originally over estimated, as a result when we extrapolate the results of our analyses to the island, the mean estimates for the number of Peary caribou and muskoxen numbers are approximately 950 and 1,600 higher, respectively than the results of the original extrapolation. Maps showing the distribution of non-calf and calf Peary caribou and muskoxen on the island are provided.

Book Productivity of Peary Caribou and Muskoxen on Banks and Melville Islands NT July 2004

Download or read book Productivity of Peary Caribou and Muskoxen on Banks and Melville Islands NT July 2004 written by J. A. Nagy and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We observed a total of 4,689 muskoxen including 4,426 adults, 82 yearlings, and 181 calves. Calves and yearlings represented approximately 4% and 2% of all muskoxen observed, respectively. The proportion of calves in the muskoxen population observed during July 2004 was the lowest documented on Banks Island since 1992. The low proportion of yearlings indicates that recruitment to the population in 2004 was very low. The low proportion of calves indicates that recruitment to the population in 2005 will also be low. A total of 471 muskox carcasses were found, with approximately 84% of these located on the northern portion of the island. This suggests that the most severe icing conditions occurred in this area. We believe that the underlying cause of the mortalities observed was malnutrition resulting from the severe icing condition on the island.

Book Abundance and Distribution of Caribou on Banks Island NWT July 1987

Download or read book Abundance and Distribution of Caribou on Banks Island NWT July 1987 written by Bruce D. McLean and published by Inuvik : Northwest Territories Renewable Resources. This book was released on 1992 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report of a stratified strip transect survey of Banks Island (N.W.T.) flown in June 1987, providing population estimates of Peary caribou (Rangifer tarandus pearyi) (number of non-calf caribou, mean group size, proportion of calves to total) and of Muskox (Ovibos moschatus). Population estimates suggest caribou populations have declined since the 1970's.

Book Sex and Age Classification Surveys of Peary Caribou on Banks Island 1982 98

Download or read book Sex and Age Classification Surveys of Peary Caribou on Banks Island 1982 98 written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex & age classification surveys of Peary caribou on Banks Island, Northwest Territories, were conducted sporadically between 1982 & 1991 and annually from 1992. This report compiles, reviews, and assesses all data from these surveys from 1982 to 1998. It presents the best estimates of yearly Peary caribou calf production for the Banks Island population, and where adequate data are available, the best estimates of overwinter survival of calves. The findings are compared with similar data available from studies of Peary caribou populations and Svalbard reindeer.
