Download or read book Fear Itself written by Nancy Lusignan Schultz and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection contains twenty-seven new essays on American paranoia drawn from a range of disciplines, including American studies, film studies, history, literature, religious studies, and sociology. It's arranged by topic and largely in chronological order, explore manifestations of fear throughout the history of the United States. Approaching the topic from a variety of perspectives and methodologies, contributors to the collection explore theoretical constructions of fear, religious intolerance in early American culture, racial discrimination, literary expressions of paranoia, and Cold War anxieties, as well as phobias of the modern age and about the future. Together, these essays cover topics from nearly every period of U.S. history, offering a remarkable picture of the nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror that Roosevelt discerned as such a paralyzing threat on the eve of the Second World War, and which continues to haunt American culture even as we shape our perceptions of the future.

Download or read book Drawing Morals written by Thomas Hurka and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected essays in moral and political philosophy by Thomas Hurka. The essays address a wide variety of topics, from the well-rounded life and the value of playing games to proportionality in war and the ethics of nationalism. They also share a common aim: to illuminate the surprising richness and subtlety of our everyday moral thought by revealing its underlying structure, which they often do by representing that structure on graphs. More specifically, the essays all give what the first in the volume calls "structural" as against "foundational" analyses of moral views. Eschewing the grander ambition of grounding our ideas about, say, virtue or desert in claims that use different concepts and concern some other, allegedly more fundamental topic, they examine these ideas in their own right and with close attention to their details. As well as illuminating their individual topics, the essays illustrate the insights this structural method can yield.

Book Experimental Evolution and the Nature of Biodiversity

Download or read book Experimental Evolution and the Nature of Biodiversity written by Rees Kassen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncovering the principles governing the origin and fate of biodiversity is the central goal of modern biology. The first edition (2014) of this novel textbook drew on more than two decades of research in microbial experimental evolution to provide a sketch of a general, empirically grounded theory of biodiversity and the first synthetic treatment of experimental evolution. It has since become an indispensable resource to research laboratories around the world as an essential introduction to the field. However, the science has moved on considerably over the last decade and an updated and expanded treatment of the subject is now timely. Three developments bearing directly on the issue of the nature of biodiversity now deserve particular attention and inclusion: (1) The introduction of high-throughput tools to capture the detailed dynamics of genetic variation are revealing that adaptation is a far more complex process than previously anticipated; (2) A rapidly expanding literature on adaptation and diversification in the kinds of physically complex, multispecies assemblages thought to characterize natural communities; and (3) A growing literature on the evolution of novelty and innovation that takes advantage of the unique features of microbial evolution experiments to study both the ecology and genetics of this process. In this second edition the author updates existing analyses with more recent work, expands on existing chapters to include the most important new ideas, and incorporates three new chapters (parallel and convergent evolution; the evolution of novelty and innovation; coevolution), detailing their respective contributions to our improved understanding of adaptation and diversification. Experimental Evolution and the Nature of Biodiversity is an accessible, upper level textbook aimed principally at graduate students and practising researchers interested in the evolution of biodiversity, particularly through the lens of experimental evolution.

Book How the world can be improved

Download or read book How the world can be improved written by Rafael Barracuda and published by Smashwords. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we want to improve life on earth and our own lives, it is necessary to find a new guide: one that can meet the challenges of our time and of the future. The old guides were good in principle, but have become bogged down in calcified structures, often accomplishing the opposite of what was originally intended. The development of society makes it necessary to find new guiding principles from time to time. To do so, however, we need to know what the history was, how the present society is structured, and how it is likely to develop. The author aims to discover this by highlighting the following topics: Information: truth and lies Conspiracies: real and imagined conspiracies Nodes and choices: in history and as individuals Education Religions Cultures and subcultures Good and evil Resolving conflicts Freedom Justice Security How a poor country can become rich. Nature and the environment and global warming Art Creativity The meaning of life Peace Reform of the United Nations Health: Physical and mental Advice on how to become happy What ultimately matters is how to safeguard and promote life on earth. According to the author, making the right choice at certain crucial moments (called "nodes") is of great importance. Ultimately, it is about love and the unity of all and everything,
