[z0'5n, ani mal; leg' Os, a discourse], would naturally begin with the more simple forms, and finally conclude with those Of the highest development. We would not, however, were we even to include a consideration Of all fossilized, as well as living, forms, meet with an unbroken series; but would find rather a branched arrangement, the ultimate twigs Of which might represent the living forms It is the province Of systematic zoology to discover the rela tions that these ultimate twigs bear to one another and to their supporting branches, giving us 'finally a natural arrangement, a complete classification. This is a rich field for scientific activity; its enormous range is a consequence, on the one hand, of the well-nigh exhaustless variety of animal organization, and, on the other hand, of the different points of view from which the zoologist enters upon the solution of his problem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Zoology This book is intended to serve as a text for beginning students in universities and colleges, or for students who have already taken a course in general biology and wish to gain a more com prehensive View of the animal kingdom. It differs from many of the college textbooks of zoology now on the market in several important respects: (1) the animals and their organs are not only described, but their functions are pointed out; (2) the ani mals described are in most cases native species; and (3) the relations of the animals to man are emphasized. Besides serv ing as a textbook, it is believed that this book will be of interest to the general reader, since it gives a bird's-eye View of the entire animal kingdom as we know it at the present time. Within the past decade there has been a tendency for teachers of zoology to pay less attention to morphology and more to physiology. As a prominent morphologist recently said. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Steps to Zoology All these animals it is the business of the zoologist to divide into groups, so that those may be placed together which are alike, and those may be separated, more or less remotely, which are different. The task is one that no single individual could accomplish by his own efforts 3 but it has been done by the combined and successive labours of many. In this way the entire animal kingdom has been divided into a number of great groups, distinguished from one another by peculiarities of structure. This permits a continuous existence in one place, and accord ingly we note the entire absence of locomotion and the or gans controlling it, which form so conspicuous a part of the body of an animal. Also in the production of flowers and seeds, and in the growth of the seed into the tree, we detect many characteristics peculiar to plants. Book An Introduction to Zoology Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Zoology Classic Reprint written by Charles Henry O'Donoghue and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Zoology The many things that we encounter in our everyday life we soon learn to divide into two more or less sharply contrasted groups, the living and the non-living. This classification is a fundamental one, and when we come to the Sciences, that is, the ordered and intensive study of these things with a view to under standing them and explaining them, we find that they also fall into two corresponding fairly distinct categories, the Physical Sciences, treating of non-living things, and the Biological Sciences, concerned with living things. The two groups differ not only in their content, but, as the nature of this is dissimilar, the methods in which they can be investigated, that is to say, the technique, is also different in the two cases. Biology is the branch of science that treats Of living things in their manifold relations with one another and with non-living things. Living beings are generally recognised as being divided into Plants and Animals, and while, as a matter of fact, we find a certain amount of overlapping between the two when we study them in detail, this is a moderately clear cut division, to correspond with which Biology may be subdivided into Botany, the study of plants, and Zoology, the studv of animals. The present book is concerned with the latter, namely Zoology, or more accurately with some aspects of it as illustrated by certain type forms treated in an elementary manner.
