Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Romances of the Middle Ages These two conditions have, it is hoped, been strictly observed in the versions here given of these romances. While special care has been taken to guard against the introduction even of phrases not in harmony with the original narratives, not less pains have been bestowed on the task of preserving all that is essential in the narrative; and thus it may perhaps be safely said that the readers of this volume will obtain from it some adequate know ledge of the tales without having their attention and their patience overtaxed by a multiplicity of super uous and therefore irksome details. Of the present version of the Arthur story, the most celebrated perhaps of all, it may be enough to say that it relates many important episodes which have been omitted in the versions recently published, while no attempt has been made to impart to the romance a more historical complexion than that which it received at the hands of Caxton's friend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epics and Romances of the Middle Ages Egend is' not history; but in legend we find embodied historical truths, manners and customs of past ages, beliefs and superstitions otherwise long forgotten. Of which history itself takes no account. Legend has preserved for us, maybe in romantic dress, maybe' under altered names and circumstances, stirringgpictures of heroes and heroines, who once have lived and suffered, fought and conquered, or have faced death with' trustful courage; pictures, too, of men of equal prowess, as strong in evil as in might, who, victorious for a time, have yet ever met a stronger power than theirs, stronger in virtue, stronger in might. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlemagne: Or Romance of the Middle Ages One of Thomas Bulfinch's books, in which he sought to clear a way into the great and entrancing jungle of the earlier ages, has already appeared in this series.1 He had a distinct feeling for the needs of Everyman and of those who like himself had to give most of their days to commerce, for he sat at the desk of the accountant and the bank-clerk through all his long life. He was born at Boston in 1796, went to school there and to Harvard University, lived on through the days when Emerson, Hawthorne, and Longfellow were coming and going in that city, spent the last thirty years of his life as a clerk in the Boston Merchants' Bank, and died in 1867. The American Civil War befell during his last decade, and he saw manyphanges but his chief events were books, and the exploits of Charlemagne engaged him at the very time when North and South were at their mortal struggle. It is no easy thing to condense a whole confused literature into a single volume, as he did in the case of the romances and histories of Charle magne; and when he did it, he had not at command as we have now the eleven or twelve volumes of the English Charlemagne Romances published by the Early English Text Society. His book is on the face of it a kind of primer, meant to induct its readers into the region of Orlando, Rinaldo, Astolfo, the brave revolter Ogier the Dane, and Malagigi the Enchanter. Presently it is hoped to add to Everyman's Library one or more of the actual romances; and meanwhile this book will serve to arouse an interest in the world whose threshold was lit with the morning sun. Book Medieval Romance in England

Download or read book Medieval Romance in England written by Laura Hibbard Loomis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medieval Romance in England: A Study of the Sources and Analogues of the Non-Cyclic Metrical Romances The amount of intensive work that has been done on the in dividual non-cyclic romances and the lack of any comprehensive effort to summarize the results have led almost equally to the present undertaking. For the purpose of selection the Middle English romances of this type offered a convenient and somewhat neglected group with which to begin. Though a few of them are relatively unimportant, others are versions of some of the most famous European stories of the Middle Ages, and for the sake of convenient reference it has seemed well to include the less with the more important. Each romance is treated indi vidually in a section, one part of which deals with Versions, and one with the Origins of the tale. Under Versions I have at tempted to give something of a life history of each legend by listing all of the literary versions which were composed before 1500, and by indicating so far as possible their relationship. In the section on Orzgms I have recorded the oplnlons of scholars on the historical and legendary elements that gave rise to the story and have tried to set forth the most important motifs which characterize the different versions. The Index of M otters and Literature at the close of the book is designed to co-ordinate this material and to reveal for these romances, as the similar in dex in Volume V of Professor Child's monumental edition of The English and Scottish Ballads revealed for the ballads, the recurrent themes, the stock situations, characters, incidents. Book A Catalogue of Medieval Literature Especially of the Romances of Chivalry

Download or read book A Catalogue of Medieval Literature Especially of the Romances of Chivalry written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of Medieval Literature, Especially of the Romances of Chivalry: And Books Relating to the Customs, Costume, Art, and Pageantry of the Middle Ages According to Hallam, the Middle-Ages form a period of a thousand years, beginning with the establishment of the Frankish kingdom in Gaul under Clovis and ending with the invasion of Italy by Charles VIII of France in 1494. The intention of the present catalogue is to give a list of "the books of the Middle Ages" including some belated growths which appeared in the Renaissance. This requires a slight modification of Hallam's limits. Medieval literature inherited much from classical and post-classical times, but its own distinctive characteristics ad their root in the eighth century, and the days of chivalry cannot be said to ave passed away before the death, in 1519, of Maximilian I, or the fall of Bayard in 1524. Our Middle-Ages shall therefore begin about a.d.750-800, when the national legends, in which the mighty events of the fifth century had been distorted or transfigured, began to take written shape; and the panorama shall lose with the strange allegorical pictures furnished by the Tewrdank of 1517 and he Weiss Kunig of 1519. Chivalry had its birth in Gaul, and the lingua rustica of earlier times, as oonas it attained to the dignity of a written speech, became the language fromantic and chivalric literature. The first step towards the creation of that terature was taken by Karl the Great, when, in the later years of the eighth entury, he committed to writing the ancient heroic ballads of the Franks. These arbara et antiqvissima carmina, as Eginhart calls them, were undoubtedly the teutonic poems which formed the original elements of the Nibelangen-lied and he Heldenbuch, and embodied traditions of the great wars of the fifth century, lended with the primeval mythology of the Gothic and Germanic race. The Prankish language died out of Gaul when the empire of Karl the Great was broken up by his grandsons, and the heroic ballads receded to the east of the Rhine, but not without leaving permanent memorials of their existence in the intellectual life of France. Many of the French romances which in the twelfth century celebrated the gesta of Charlemagne and his Paladins, were based upon the lays of Frankish minstrels. The bi-lingual character of the people of Eastern Gaul in the ninth century is shown by the extant record of the compact of 842 between Charles the Bald and Louis the German, which comprises the first written specimen of the French language. Book The Romance Cycle of Charlemagne and His Peers Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Romance Cycle of Charlemagne and His Peers Classic Reprint written by Jessie Laidlay Weston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance Cycle of Charlemagne and His Peers The Middle Ages were, as we know, the ages of Romance; Romance embodied in Prose - pseudo historic chronicles, pseudo - biographical accounts of noted heroes; in Poetry - short lais, longer poems (metrical romances as we call them), some independent, the greater number falling into groups round some one central figure, and in their entirety forming what we call cycles of Romance. To the mind of a writer of the twelfth century, whose words are quoted above (jean Bode], author of La Chanson des Saisnes), there were three of such cycles, and to them alone might the atten tion of a poet of that day be worthily directed; and of these cycles the respective centres were Charlemagne, Arthur, and Alexander. Book French Mediaeval Romances

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Mediaeval Romances: From the Lays of Marie De France An age so feminist in its sympathies as ours should be attracted the more easily to Marie de France, because she was both an artist and a woman. To deliver oneself through any medium is always difficult. For a woman Of the Middle Ages to express herself publicly by any means whatever was almost impossible. A great lady, a great Saint or church woman, might do so very occasionally. But the individuality Of the ordinary wife was merged in that Of her husband, and for one Abbess of Shrewsbury or Whitby, for one St. Clare or St. Hilda, there were how many thousand Obscure sisters, who were buried in the daily routine Of a life hidden with Christ in God! Doubtless the artistic temperament burst out now and again in woman, and would take no denial. It blew where it listed, appearing in the most unexpected places. A young nun in a Saxon convent, for instance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epic and Romance Essays on Medieval Literature These essays are intended as a general description of some of the principal forms of narrative literature in the Middle Ages, and as a review Of some of the more interesting works in each period. It is hardly necessary to say that the conclusion is one in which nothing is concluded, and that whole tracts of literature have been barely touched on - the English metrical romances, the Middle High German poems, the ballads, Northern and Southern - which would require to be considered in any systematic treatment of this part of history.
