Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the debut of These Are My Children in 1949, the daytime television soap opera has been foundational to the history of the medium as an economic, creative, technological, social, and cultural institution. In Her Stories, Elana Levine draws on archival research and her experience as a longtime soap fan to provide an in-depth history of the daytime television soap opera as a uniquely gendered cultural form and a central force in the economic and social influence of network television. Closely observing the production, promotion, reception, and narrative strategies of the soaps, Levine examines two intersecting developments: the role soap operas have played in shaping cultural understandings of gender and the rise and fall of broadcast network television as a culture industry. In so doing, she foregrounds how soap operas have revealed changing conceptions of gender and femininity as imagined by and reflected on the television screen.

Educators will appreciate the concise annotations, arranged alphabetically by author, that form the core of this work. A theme guide utilizes the nearly 100 theme headings matching those at the start of each entry, allowing the user to quickly locate story titles on related themes and construct reading lists based on individual interests and needs. Another component designed to aid librarians offers one bibliography that lists the anthologies from which the stories are drawn (Works Cited) and one comprised of a number of recent anthologies that can be adapted for the classroom (Further Reading). In addition to the theme index, the general subject and author indexes make this a user-friendly and invaluable resource.

Cawelti reveals the artistry that underlies the best in formulaic literature. Cawelti discusses such seemingly diverse works as Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Dorothy Sayers's The Nine Tailors, and Owen Wister's The Virginian in the light of his hypotheses about the cultural function of formula literature. He describes the most important artistic characteristics of popular formula stories and the differences between this literature and that commonly labeled "high" or "serious" literature. He also defines the archetypal patterns of adventure, mystery, romance, melodrama, and fantasy, and offers a tentative account of their basis in human psychology.

Download or read book Popular Stories and Promised Lands written by Roger C. Aden and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2007-07-25 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular culture stories--found in comic strips, TV programs, magazines, and movies--gain their popularity by evoking our desires and anxieties. Aden offers a well-constructed argument that creating a sense of place (and with it a sense of personal identity and community) serves as an important enticement for many popular cultures works. . . . Aden handles contemporary theory deftly and] does an excellent job of identifying many of the tensions present in 20th-century America. --Quarterly Journal of Speech Stories encountered at the movies, on television, and in popular magazines are treated as reflections of the popular culture. . . . Believing that the American experience has been guided by a 'normative narrative' or 'grand narrative' that constitutes the 'American dream, ' Aden holds that stories can be used to extract the 'rules' of a narrative, determine the direction, and identify conceptions of the 'promised lands' for a culture. --Critical Studies in Mass Communication

Book History and Popular Memory

  • Author : Paul A Cohen
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2014-04-29
  • ISBN : 0231537298
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book History and Popular Memory written by Paul A Cohen and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When people experience a traumatic event, such as war or the threat of annihilation, they often turn to history for stories that promise a positive outcome to their suffering. During World War II, the French took comfort in the story of Joan of Arc and her heroic efforts to rid France of foreign occupation. To bring the Joan narrative more into line with current circumstances, however, popular retellings modified the original story so that what people believed took place in the past was often quite different from what actually occurred. Paul A. Cohen identifies this interplay between story and history as a worldwide phenomenon, found in countries of radically different cultural, religious, and social character. He focuses here on Serbia, Israel, China, France, the Soviet Union, and Great Britain, all of which experienced severe crises in the twentieth century and, in response, appropriated age-old historical narratives that resonated with what was happening in the present to serve a unifying, restorative purpose. A central theme in the book is the distinction between popular memory and history. Although vitally important to historians, this distinction is routinely blurred in people's minds, and the historian's truth often cannot compete with the power of a compelling story from the past, even when it has been seriously distorted by myth or political manipulation. Cohen concludes by suggesting that the patterns of interaction he probes, given their near universality, may well be rooted in certain human propensities that transcend cultural difference.
