Book excerpt: Cathy Drumm has been in love with horses since she was 5 years old. Since then, she has participated in Pony Club; competed in the hunter/jumper world and English and western dressage; trained riders young and old, and horses -both backyard and A-circuit; bought, trained, and sold horses; ran successful riding stables; transported horses; continued to learn; and, continued to ride. Cathy's life-personal, and professional - has depended on horses. During this journey with horses, Cathy has reached impressive pinnacles and fallen into unimaginable depths that she has risen from, again and again, like a phoenix rising from the ashes. And while horses have been both the cause of joy and success and the cause of collapse, Cathy has needed them in her life. Her story is one of strength and perseverance, love and understanding, and the power of horses in a person's life.

Book Tall Ears and Short Tales

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carol Chapman
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2003-10
  • ISBN : 0595289355
  • Pages : 138 pages

Download or read book Tall Ears and Short Tales written by Carol Chapman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-10 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Carol Chapman sold her home in Connecticut, she soon found herself on one of those roads less traveled...and that has made all the difference. Arriving in Texas, she bought a ranch and created The Last Refuge, a sanctuary for unwanted dogs, cats, goats, and, most of all, for horses, mules, and donkeys that were destined for the slaughterhouse. Meet Chipper, a chocolate Lab who not only participates in nursing horses back to health, but has also raised cats, lambs, and baby chicks. Learn how goats secretly yearn for the mountains of their ancestors and happily leap onto the hood of a car to illustrate that point. Follow Chapman around for a day and discover that it's hard to get out of shape when caring for horses--if lugging what has to go in one end (massive buckets of water, sixty-pound bales of hay, and fifty-pound bags of grain) doesn't keep a waistline trim, shoveling up piles of what comes out the other end will. Grab a cup of coffee, pull up a hay bale, and enjoy Chapman's unconventional collection of earthy, hilarious, but always heart-warming and timeless reminiscences.

To avoid her drunk, abusive father, who is the Swiss version of Oscar Wilde and her American mother, a has-been soap opera star, who has no interest in her chubby, slant-eyed daughter, Marlene spends most of her time hiding inside the warehouse, which houses the family business, Morl Theatrical Costumier. Preferring life among mannequins, props and costumes, Marlene has created over the years, a life of make-believe, where her imagination runs rampant. Trouble is, unbeknownst to her, she's also created an alter-ego named Bad Egg who happens to be a 'toon' and who wants to eliminate Marlene's personality all together. And to make things worse, Bad Egg has also created an alter-ego ego in the form of Kali, the Hindu Goddess of Sex and Destruction who plans on murdering Marlene's abusive father. Between these three out of control personalities, not to mention, Marlene's difficult circumstances with both parents, the poor girl ends up in a mental institution. With the help of a Jungian psychologist named Dr. Karin Sommerfeldt, Marlene D. Morl's multiple act of misfits finally become solo again. Deflection of Pig-Ponies is a cross between the films, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and American Beauty.

Book Dictionary of the Ponca People

Download or read book Dictionary of the Ponca People written by Louis V. Headman and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published through the Recovering Languages and Literacies of the Americas initiative, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Dictionary of the Ponca People presents approximately five thousand words and definitions used by Ponca speakers from the late nineteenth century to the present. Until relatively recently, the Ponca language had been passed down solely as part of an oral tradition in which children learned the language at home by listening to their elders. Almost every family on the southern Ponca reservation in Oklahoma spoke the language fluently until the 1940s, when English began to replace the Ponca language as children entered government boarding schools and were forced to learn English. In response to demand, Ponca language classes are now being offered to children and adults as people seek to gain knowledge of this important link to tradition and culture. The approximately five thousand words in this volume encompass the main artery of the language heard and spoken by the parents and grandparents of the Ponca Council of Elders. Additional words are included, such as those related to modern devices and technology. This dictionary has been compiled at a time when the southern Poncas are initiating a new syntactic structure to the language, as few can speak a full sentence. This dictionary is not intended to recover a cultural period or practice but rather as a reference to the spoken language of the people.
