Book excerpt: A deeply personal exploration of fatherhood, addiction, and resiliency from Craig Melvin, news anchor of NBC’s Today show. For Craig Melvin this book is more an investigation than a memoir. It's an opportunity to better understand his father; to interrogate his family's legacy of addiction and despair but also transformation and redemption; and to explore the challenges facing all dads--including Craig himself, a father of two young children. Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina, Craig had a fraught relationship with his father. Lawrence Melvin was a distant, often absent parent due to his drinking as well as his job working the graveyard shift at a postal facility. Watching sports and tinkering on Lawrence's beloved (but unreliable) 1973 Pontiac LeMans were two ways father and son connected, but as Lawrence's drinking spiraled out of control, their bond was stretched to the breaking point. Fortunately, Craig had a loving, fiercely protective mother who held the family together. He also had a series of surrogate father figures in his life--uncles, teachers, workplace mentors--who by their examples helped him figure out the kind of person and father he wanted to be. Pops is the story of all these men--and of the inspiring fathers Craig has met reporting his "Dads Got This Series" on the Today show. Pops is also the story of Craig and Lawrence Melvin's long journey to reconciliation and understanding, and of how all these experiences and encounters have informed Craig's understanding of his own role as a dad.

Book Revolving Doors The True Account of the Full Spectrum of Fostering Abuses of a Boy Before Age Five

Download or read book Revolving Doors The True Account of the Full Spectrum of Fostering Abuses of a Boy Before Age Five written by Dawn Maree Ketteringham, B.A., M.A.Ed. and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Revolving Doors" is an adult, autobiographical novel in which 'Richard', now in his sixties, recalls incidents of his nightmarish first five years of childhood, while fostered through seventeen residences as a ward of Toronto's "S.W.York Co. Children's Aid Society". From his perspective and understanding as a small child, he shares graphic details of memories of unspeakably perverse mistreatment, including perpetual neglect, abuse, molestation and worse. After years of counselling and treatment for ensuing, debilitating mental illnesses, "Richard" experienced a "black-out", resulting in the sudden awareness of long-buried, traumatic memories. The author furnishes vivid details of her brother's incredible story by interweaving his recollections, and relentless nightmares, with documentation from the organizations involved. It is "Richard's" most sincere desire that his story of ultimate survival might encourage similar abuse victims who may be searching for hope in facing and fighting their own "demons".

Book Seven Days of the Dog

Download or read book Seven Days of the Dog written by Vernon Schmid and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written over a period of ten years by the poet, journalist, educator and clergyman, Vernon Schmid, Seven Days of the Dog centers around the John Lee Parker, a poet and journalist, called home in the summer dog days of Kansas for the funeral of his lifelong mentor and friend Blind Tom Harper. The author is a native of the region he writes about so he brings to the novel a feeling for the period, the climate, and the humanity. Within the seven days in which the novel takes place John Lee is confronted by the surprising news that the woman he loved as a teenager is now married to a violent, fundamentalist deputy sheriff. He is also surprised to learn that he is heir to Blind Tom's forty acre farm on the outskirts of the village. His struggle to readapt himself to the community after years away in college and work as a journalist in Baltimore, Maryland, is made even more challenging by a series of revelations about his own Native American heritage, the peeling away of the superficiality hiding violence and hatred in the community, and the continuing mystical reappearance of Blind Tom. The oppressive heat, the news that Blind Tom was killed by a hit and run driver, his mother's strong and resilient presence in the midst of a community on the edge of disintegration, and the anchoring presence of Blind Tom's spirit creates an atmosphere that is filled with humor, tension, passion, violence and murder. Anchoring much of the story are four old men, storytellers who recite the history and reality of the community with humor and the wisdom of ancient priests. They also involve themselves in the action of the story resulting in humor and arrest. The surprising turn of events as the week passes creates tension and laughter in the reader with an unexpected twist that culminates in a bloody and revelatory ending.

Book excerpt: Tree of Lives is an epic about the legacy of violence and abuse passed down through generations -- and the redeeming strength of Ruth, a singular woman who overcomes the effects of a horrific secret. Ruth will not be silenced. She will not be robbed of her strength. A clear-eyed young artist with a promising future, Ruth is stymied at every turn by men who seek to maintain power over her. Gripping and inspiring, Tree of Lives spans the 20th century, and in following Ruth's development, demonstrates how feisty and independent women paved the way in the fight for social equality as the decades unraveled. At the heart of this novel is the story of one woman who made her own way with wit, grit, luck and a wide open heart. This book is a poignant reminder of the importance of self-empowerment and the courage needed to break free from the shackles of the past. Within each of us, there is a hidden well from which we can draw our power, whether it is filled with art or any other channel of love. Overall, this is a tale that is often painful but equally inspiring. Readers with an interest in complex soul-searching into family secrets and the dynamics they forge will feel the same way.
