Book Pope the Odyssey and the Ontology of Language

Download or read book Pope the Odyssey and the Ontology of Language written by Nicholas Gayle and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique study examines the interface between contemporary philosophy and literature through Alexander Pope’s majestic translation of the Odyssey of Homer. Employing the lens supplied by the philosopher Graham Harman in his development of Object-Oriented Ontology, it explores the beautiful (and sometimes dazzling) figurative language of both Pope’s English and Homer’s Greek; in so doing, it uncovers something of the vast withdrawn and subterranean reality to which the poems can only allude, setting this against a contrasting sensual world—a world encrusted with shimmering images and objects that range from the quotidian to the metaphysically bizarre.

Book Conrad and the Being of the World

Download or read book Conrad and the Being of the World written by Nicholas Gayle and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is it that many readers sense in Joseph Conrad’s universe something opaque and withdrawn, a suggestive feeling of something lying behind his richly textured prose that is possibly momentous, always hidden, but never fully expressed? This unique study explores and answers this question by analysing Conrad’s work through the lens of Object-Oriented Ontology, a new development in contemporary philosophy that has already been employed to illuminating effect in aesthetics and the humanities, quite apart from philosophy itself. What results from such a literary and philosophical coupling is a persuasive reading with real explanatory force, one able to shed light on what has remained hidden in Conrad till now, at the same time as it articulates a metaphysical structure of not just Conrad’s world but the universe itself and the very things we are—and what we take ourselves to be.

Book Cyberspace Odyssey

  • Author : Jos de Mul
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2010-04-16
  • ISBN : 1443821934
  • Pages : 355 pages

Download or read book Cyberspace Odyssey written by Jos de Mul and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of the hominids, more than five million years ago, marked the start of the human odyssey through space and time. This book deals with the last stage of this fascinating journey: the exploration of cyberspace and cybertime. Through the rapid global implementation of information and communication technologies, a new realm for human experience and imagination has been disclosed. Reversely, these postgeographical and posthistorical technologies have started to colonize our bodies and minds. Taking Homer’s Odyssey and Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey as his starting point, the author investigates the ‘informatization of the worldview’, focusing on its implications for our culture–arts, religion, and science–and, ultimately, our form of life. Moving across a wide range of disciplines, varying from philosophical anthropology and palaeontology to information theory, and from astrophysics to literary, film and new media studies, the author discusses our ‘cyberspace odyssey’ from a reflective position beyond euphoria and nostalgia. His analysis is as profound as nuanced and deals with issues that will be high on the agenda for many decades to come. In 2003 a Dutch Edition of Cyberspace Odyssey received the Socrates Prize for the best philosophy book published in Dutch.

Book excerpt: A new experience of identity is emerging within the digital apparatus under the rubric of “avatar.” This study develops “concept avatar” as an opportunity to invent a practice of citizenship native to the Internet that simulates the functionality of measure dramatized in the traditions of “descent” (“avatar”) or “incarnation,” including the original usage in the Bhagavad Gita, and the Western evolution of the virtue of prudence from the Ancient daimon, through genius and character, to the contemporary sinthome.
