Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vol. 1: In the essays presented in this volume, Bentham lays down the theoretical principles from which he develops his proposals for reform of the English poor laws in response to the perceived crisis in poor relief in the mid-1790s. In "Essays on the Subject of the Poor Laws", Bentham seeks to justify the principles on which entitlement to relief should be grounded, while in "Pauper Systems Compared", he presents a sustained comparison between home relief and institutional relief. The polemical "Observations on the Poor Bill" is a lively critique of the Bill introduced into the House of Commons by William Pitt in 1796. The ideas advanced here by Bentham were a significant influence on Edwin Chadwick, and through his mediation, on the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. The essays are based almost entirely on manuscript sources

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parry, Edward Abbott. The Law and the Poor. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1914. xxi, 316 pp. Reprinted 2004 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 1-58477-354-5. Cloth $70. * Reprint of first edition. Parry [1863-1953] was an English municipal judge for over twenty years. His book, a guide for "the man in the street," which began as a series of newspaper articles, outlines the laws concerning insolvency, debt and poverty. It is distinguished by its emphasis on cultural attitudes toward the poor, and its readability and humanity. Parry's was among the strong voices to speak in sympathy to the poor in response to the Poor Law Amendment Act which had been enacted in 1834. "Judge Parry is particularly gifted with that rare imagination which enables him to see mortal men and women where others see cases, litigants, and parties before the courts. Hence his volume is a rare document, especially useful as a corrective to the tendency to lose sight of actual living conditions in the logical pursuit of abstract legal doctrines." Cohen, Law and Social Order cited in Marke, A Catalogue of the Law Collection at New York University (1953) 810.

Book The History of the Poor Laws

Download or read book The History of the Poor Laws written by Richard Burn and published by . This book was released on 1764 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only edition. The author of the standard English justice of the peace manual of the eighteenth century, Burn was also the author of a law dictionary and important treatises on ecclesiastical and poor law. 'The [History of Poor Laws] is a history, an account of the various proposals made at different periods for the reform of the poor law, and the author's own proposals for the reform both of the poor law and of some other branches of the jurisdiction of the justices of the peace. Like Burn's other works, it is a clear and well arranged account of the subjects with which it deals; but it is more valuable as a criticism, by an exceptionally competent critic, of the defects of the law in his own day, than as a history.'
