Book excerpt: Herbert Ponting (1870-1935) was young bank clerk when he bought an early Kodak compact camera. By the early 1900s, he was living in California, working as a professional photographer, known for stereoview and enlarged images of America, Japan and the Russo-Japanese war. In 1909, back in Britain, Ponting was recruited by Captain Robert Scott as photographer and filmmaker for his second Antarctic expedition. In 1913, following the deaths of Scott and his South Pole party companions, Ponting's images of Antarctica were widely published, and he gave innovative 'cinema-lectures' on the expedition. When war broke out, Ponting's offers to serve as a photographer or correspondent were declined, but in 1918 he, Ernest Shackleton and other Antarctic veterans joined a government-backed Arctic expedition. During the economically depressed 1920s and 1930s, Ponting wrote his Antarctic memoir, re-worked his Antarctic films into silent and 'talkie' versions and worked on inventions. Like others, he struggled financially but was sustained by correspondence with photographic equipment magnate George Eastman, a late-life romance with singer Glae Carrodus and knowing that his images of Antarctica had secured his place in photographic and filmmaking history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cattle driving was a major economic activity in the 19th century American West, particularly between 1856 and 1896. Texas Longhorns were a tough breed of cattle, in a tough place—Texas. And tough were the men that drove them. Two such men, though hardly men at all, had a plan. Young Tom Candy Ponting, the son of a farmer from Somerset, England, and his partner, Washington Malone, had heard stories of the availability of cattle in Texas. The durable, hardy Texas cattle were practically running wild and could be bought for next to nothing. Ponting and Malone would buy, herd and sell cattle, all the time saving their money, so they could ride to Texas and buy Longhorns. They’d drive them all the way to New York—something that had never been done before. The trip would take over a year, so the cattle would winter in the Midwest and fatten on corn. The drive and the corn would turn an “$8 to $12 dollar steer” from Texas, into an “$80 to a $100 dollar steer” in New York. The present volume contains Tom Candy Ponting’s recollections of his time as a drover. Written on the urging of his children, Ponting’s memoirs were originally published in very limited numbers in 1907, and then again in 1952 in revised format.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Season of Tests, Turmoil and Twenty20 Few Australian cricket captains have had a tougher time than that experienced by Ricky Ponting in 2008-09 - a controversial test tour of India, series home and away against South Africa, more than 30 ODIs, the ICC World twenty20. And, finally, the fight for the Ashes.Ponting began the year with a better winning percentage than any other captain in test history, but this adventure ended in disappointment, as his young side fell just short in England after a typically dramatic confrontation. the task of replacing recently retired champions such as Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist and Hayden is still a work in progress. However, this is a story with many positives, as Ponting's Australians produced a number of impressive performances, most notably in South Africa, when they stunned the home side in consecutive matches, and at Leeds, when they completed one of the most decisive test wins of recent times. the emergence of young guns such as Mitchell Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus, Phillip Hughes and Peter Siddle points to an exciting future. throughout the period of cricket recalled in Ashes Diary 2009, Ponting played with a steely spirit that impressed many observers, including the Guardian newspaper which, after the final Ashes test, wrote, 'Staring down the barrel of a loss that must have hurt more than any other in his career, Ponting showed what a class act he is.' During the series, he had become Australia's highest test run-scorer. At the end, the crowd at the Oval gave him an extended standing ovation.this insider's account follows the path that led to this increased respect. It had been quite a year ...

Book Ricky Ponting s Captain s Diary 2007

Download or read book Ricky Ponting s Captain s Diary 2007 written by Ricky Ponting and published by HarperCollins Australia. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From facing the old foe, England, to a World Cup campaign, Australia's cricket captain charts his year ... In 2006-07, Ricky Ponting's Australian team achieved the first Ashes clean sweep in 86 years, an experience Ponting described as 'the best of my cricketing life'. It featured stunning performances from men such as Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds, while the captain himself drew comparisons with Bradman following his hundreds in the opening two tests.Yet, immediately afterwards, the Australians produced an even more commanding performance at the World Cup in the Caribbean. Not even the bizarre ending to the final againstSri Lanka, in near darkness after officials misinterpreted the playing conditions, could hide the fact that this victory was one of the most dominant in Australian sporting history. It was a season of triumph, but also the last for some of Ponting's great teammates - Warne, Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer and Damien Martyn - and coach John Buchanan, who all announced their retirements. In Captain's Diary 2007, Ponting pays tribute to these men, and in doing so reveals why they, and the team he is privileged to captain, are so special.

This book was released on 2016-01-04 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing and Novel Applications of Multilayer Polymer Films discusses the advancements in multilayer technology, including its capability to produce hundreds of layers in a single film by a melt coextrusion process. These engineered films can have significantly enhanced performance properties, allowing films to be made thinner, stronger, and with better sealing properties. As recent developments in feedblocks and materials have opened up a range of new possibilities, this book discusses different feedblocks, and viscosity and material considerations. It is the first comprehensive summary of the latest technology in multilayer film processing and related applications, and is written from a practical perspective, translating research into commercial production and real world products. The book provides fundamental knowledge on microlayer coextrusion processing technology, how to fabricate such structures, structure and properties of such microlayers, and potential applications, thus helping research scientists and engineers develop products which not only fulfill their primary function, but can also be manufactured reliably, safely, and economically. - Provides a fundamental knowledge of microlayer coextrusion processing, including how to fabricate microlayer structures, the properties of microlayers, and potential applications, including optics, polymer film capacitors, and semiconductors - Includes an in-depth analysis of all technologies used for producing multilayered films and structures by coextrusion processing - Thoroughly assesses potential future trends in multilayer coextrusion technology, thus enabling engineers and scientists to stay ahead of the curve in this rapidly advancing area
