Download or read book Pompeiana Vol 2 of 2 written by William Gell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pompeiana, Vol. 2 of 2: The Topography, Edifices and Ornaments of Pompeii, the Result of Excavations Since 1819 In a line with the tablinum are two other apartments of the same size, one of which was probably the triclinium, and the other an exedra or pinacotheca. There are only two cubiculi in this court, and only three in the atrium, the upper oor probably sup plying the other necessary bedrooms. The step from the atrium to the tabli num is faced With a remarkably pretty sculp ture of leaves and flowers. The triclinium is painted within in imitation of brickwork a taste which continues to prevail in modern Italy. The other room is decorated with pic tures of game and hunting, so that, if it be true that the ornaments were analogous to the uses of the chamber, these would be more appropriate to the dining-room than to the pinacotheca. Book Pompeii Its Life and Art Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pompeii Its Life and Art Classic Reprint written by August Mau and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-23 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pompeii, Its Life and Art The restorations are not fanciful. They were made with the help of careful measurements and of computations based upon the existing remains; Occasionally also evidence derived from reliefs and wall paintings was utilized. Uncertain details are generally omitted. It is due to Professor Mau to say that in preparing his manu script for English readers I have, with his permission, made some changes. The order Of presentation has occasionally been altered. In several chapters the German manuscript has been abridged, while in others, containing points in regard to which English readers might desire a somewhat fuller statement, I have made slight additions. The preparation of the English form of the volume, undertaken for reasons Of friendship, has been less a task than a pleasure. Book Returns to Pompeii

Download or read book Returns to Pompeii written by Shelley Hales and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a series of case studies that trace the ways in which audiences across Europe have attempted to return to Pompeii by emulating its interior decorations since the city?s rediscovery in the mid-eighteenth century. As such, it is about both the impact of Pompeian antiquity on the present and the reception in the present of that antique past, exploring the variety of ways in which Pompeian domestic space and decoration have been revived (and for what purposes and audiences). The contributions to the volumes compare the ways in which Pompeian wall decorations were interpreted and adapted, given new context and put to serve new social and political purposes, both close to their place of discovery, in the Kingdom of Naples, and in the far-off European periphery, represented by Denmark and Sweden.

Book Illustrations of Ancient Art

Download or read book Illustrations of Ancient Art written by Edward Trollope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Ancient Art: Selected From Objects Discovered at Pompeii and Herculaneum The Architecture of Herculaneum and Pompeu has been most com pletely illustrated by the great works of Mazois, Donaldson, and Gell. The statues, together With some of the other most striking works of art, have been also engraved in several publications of much merit. The chief, if not the only work, however, treating of the immense general mass of antiquities, is that published by the Neapolitan Government; but the cost of this is so great, that it must necessarily be excluded from most private libraries. It has consequently been thought possible that an illustrated work on this subject, comprising specimens of the Arms, Armour, Jewelry, Furniture, Vases, &c., Which throw so much light upon the domestic life and manners of the Romans, might not be unacceptable to the public. The Author has therefore attempted to classify the materials he possessed, which have been chiefly gathered from a large number of his own sketches, taken from the originals, but aided by selections from other works, such as the Museo Borbomlco, &c. In the explanatory descriptions he has to acknowledge the great assistance he has derived from Smith's Classical Dictionary and Rich's Companion to the Latin Dictionary, 850.
