Book Polygyny and Sexual Selection in Red Winged Blackbirds

Download or read book Polygyny and Sexual Selection in Red Winged Blackbirds written by William A. Searcy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to explain why red-winged blackbirds are polygynous and to describe the effects of this mating system on other aspects of the biology of the species. Polygyny is a mating system in which individual males form long-term mating relationships with more than one female at a time. The authors show that females choose to mate polygynously because there is little cost to sharing male parental care in this species, and because females gain protection against nest predation by nesting near other females. Polygyny has the effect of intensifying sexual selection on males by increasing the variance in mating success among males. For females, polygyny means that they will often share a male's territory with other females during the breeding season and will thus be forced to adapt to frequent female-female interactions. This work reviews the results of many studies by other researchers, as well as presenting the authors' own results. Studies of red-winged blackbirds have ranged from long-term investigations of reproductive success and demography, to research on genetic parentage based on modern molecular methods, to a variety of experimental manipulations of ecological circumstances and behavior. Since the red-winged blackbird is one of the best studied species of any taxa in terms of its behavior and ecology, the authors have a particularly extensive body of results on which to base their conclusions. Book The Myth of the Monogamous Package

Download or read book The Myth of the Monogamous Package written by Matt and published by Tredition Gmbh. This book was released on 2024-05-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever wonder if monogamy is the norm in the animal kingdom? "The Myth of the Monogamous Package" shatters that assumption. This book explores the fascinating diversity of animal mating systems, revealing a world far more complex than the typical pair-bonding narrative. From the well-known harem structures of some primates to the surprising infidelity of seemingly monogamous birds, this book delves into the strategies animals employ to reproduce. You'll learn about factors that influence mating systems, such as competition for resources, parental needs, and social structures. But "The Myth of the Monogamous Package" goes beyond mere curiosity. It explores the implications of this diversity for understanding human behavior. By examining the natural world, we gain a deeper perspective on our own evolutionary history and the potential range of human mating strategies. This thought-provoking book is perfect for anyone interested in animal behavior, evolutionary biology, and the complexities of love and relationships in the animal kingdom.

Book Mating and Marriage

Download or read book Mating and Marriage written by Vernon Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives from the fields of zoology, biological anthropology, social anthropology, and sociology frame the discussion in this fascinating new study of mating and marriage. Both animals and humans engage in mating; however, only humans marry each other. Is marriage an outgrowth at the cultural level of the kinds of mating habits observed in animals, or is it inherently different? This thoughtful volume presents stimulating, new interdisciplinary approaches to this study, indicates the main problems, and explores promising possibilities for a synthesis.

Book Evolution and Speciation in Animals

Download or read book Evolution and Speciation in Animals written by T. J. Pandian and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-09-23 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first attempt to quantify environmental factors and life history traits that accelerate or decelerate species diversity in animals. About 15%, 8% and 77% of species are distributed in marine (70% of earth’s surface), freshwater (terra firma fosters more diversity. The harsh hadal, desert and elevated montane habitats restrict diversity to 0.5-4.2%. Costing more time and energy, osmotrophic and suspension modes of food acquisition limit diversity to Selfing hermaphrodites (0.9%), parthenogens ( Incidence of heterogamety is four-times more in males than in females. Hence, evolution is more a male-driven process. Egg size is determined by environmental factors, but lecithality is genetically fixed. In poikilotherms, sex is also determined by gene(s), but differentiation by environmental factors. The extra-ovarian vitellogenesis (> 96%), spermatozoan (81%) rather than spermatophore mechanism of sperm transfer, promiscuity and polygamy over monogamy, iteroparity (99.6%) over semelparity and internal fertilization (84%) are preferred, as they accelerate diversity. Body size and egg size determine fecundity. Indirect life cycle (82%) and incorporation of feeding larval stages accelerate diversity. Brooding and viviparity (6.4%) decelerate it. Parasitism extends life span and liberates fecundity from eutelism. Evolution is an ongoing process, and speciation and extinction are its unavoidable by-products. The in-built conservation mechanism of reviving life after a sleeping duration has been reduced from a few million years in microbial spores to a few thousand years in plant seeds and a few hundred years in dormant eggs in animals. Hence, animal conservation requires priority. The existence of temperature-resistant/insensitive individuals, strains and species shall flourish during the ongoing global warming and earth shall continue with such burgeoning species, hopefully inclusive of man.

Download or read book Animal Social Networks written by Dr. Jens Krause and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific study of networks - computer, social, and biological - has received an enormous amount of interest in recent years. However, the network approach has been applied to the field of animal behaviour relatively late compared to many other biological disciplines. Understanding social network structure is of great importance for biologists since the structural characteristics of any network will affect its constituent members and influence a range of diverse behaviours. These include finding and choosing a sexual partner, developing and maintaining cooperative relationships, and engaging in foraging and anti-predator behavior. This novel text provides an overview of the insights that network analysis has provided into major biological processes, and how it has enhanced our understanding of the social organisation of several important taxonomic groups. It brings together researchers from a wide range of disciplines with the aim of providing both an overview of the power of the network approach for understanding patterns and process in animal populations, as well as outlining how current methodological constraints and challenges can be overcome. Animal Social Networks is principally aimed at graduate level students and researchers in the fields of ecology, zoology, animal behaviour, and evolutionary biology but will also be of interest to social scientists.

Book TEXTBOOK OF ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR THIRD EDITION

Download or read book TEXTBOOK OF ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR THIRD EDITION written by MANDAL, FATIK BARAN and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-accepted book, now in its Third Edition, is an extension of the previous edition. The text has further enriched with more information to understand animal behaviour coherently and scientifically. The book attempts to provide a reasonably suitable account of animal behaviour for undergraduate as well as postgraduate students. Although behaviour of animals has fascinated people for a long, behavioural biology has been incorporated in the syllabi very recently. The study of behaviour received its important boost from the work of Charles Darwin who used the term ‘instinct’, to refer to the natural behaviour of animals. In the 1930s, a comprehensive theory of animal behaviour emerged through the work of Konrad Lorenz and, later of Niko Tinbergen. Biological study of behaviour, in fact came of age as a science when Lorenz, Tinbergen and Karl von Frisch received the Nobel Prize for their contribution to science. Observing and describing exactly what animals do is fascinating and scientific analysis of their behaviour is significant for several reasons. Each species tends to have an array of stereotyped behaviours, some of which are shared with related species, but others are unique. Ecology, natural selection, macroevolution, microevolution, and gene constitute the foundation of animal behaviour. Various animal groups exhibit diverse strategies for their survival and reproduction which are discussed in this book. The book is primarily intended for the students of B.Sc./M.Sc. (Zoology/Life Science) for their courses. It would be useful for the researchers in the field of animal behaviour, and conservation biologists. It would also attract students who are pursuing courses in Sociology and Anthropology. Key features • Presents a well-balanced view of ethology. • Discusses the current development in the field. • Includes a glossary of important terms. • Offers chapter-end questions to check the students’ understanding of the concept.
