Book Revenge Tragedy and Classical Philosophy on the Early Modern Stage

Download or read book Revenge Tragedy and Classical Philosophy on the Early Modern Stage written by Crosbie Christopher Crosbie and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-14 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the influence of classical philosophy on revenge narratives by Shakespeare and his contemporariesThis book discovers within early modern revenge tragedy the surprising shaping presence of a wide array of classical philosophies not commonly affiliated with the genre. By recovering the pervasive influence of Aristotelian faculty psychology on The Spanish Tragedy, Aristotelian ethics on Titus Andronicus, Lucretian atomism on Hamlet, Galenic pneumatics on Antonio's Revenge and Epictetian Stoicism on The Duchess of Malfi, Crosbie reveals how the very atmospheres and ontological assumptions of revenge tragedy exert their own kind of conditioning dramaturgical force. The book also revitalises our understanding of how the Renaissance stage, even at its most lurid, functions as a unique space for the era's practical, vernacular engagement with received philosophy.Key FeaturesAnalyzes the twentieth-century development of revenge tragedy as a genre, and diagnoses the roots of modern criticism's tendency to treat most philosophy as estranged from the violent work of revengeProvides fresh readings of five plays central to the revenge tragedy genre, paying close attention to the conditioning influence of classical philosophy on their narratives of retributionReveals how revenge tragedy's distinctive 'moods' or 'atmospheres' emerge from fully-realized sets of ontological assumptions which help shape reception of retribution on the early modern stageDevelops new reception histories for five classical philosophical doctrines, revealing their currency and, what's more, radical adaptability within early modern England

Book The First and Second Parts of King Edward IV

Download or read book The First and Second Parts of King Edward IV written by Thomas Heywood and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-06 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yet the playwright produced a text which was at once generically complex (the play blurs the distinction between chronicle history and 'domestic' tragedy), brilliantly assured in its dramatic craftsmanship, and politically explosive. The play depicts the streets and houses in which its original spectators lived and worked with a precision unprecedented in English writing. But this vividly realised London is under assault, first from rebels outside its walls, and subsequently (and more seriously) from the predations of two monarchs."

Book The Duel in Early Modern England

Download or read book The Duel in Early Modern England written by Markku Peltonen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-30 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguments about the place and practice of the duel in early modern England were widespread. The distinguished intellectual historian Markku Peltonen examines this debate, and show how the moral and ideological status of duelling was discussed within a much larger cultural context of courtesy, civility and politeness. The advocates of the duel, following Italian and French examples, contended that it maintained and enhanced politeness; its critics by contrast increasingly severed duelling from civility, and this separation became part of a vigorous attempt in the late seventeenth century and beyond to redefine civility, politeness and indeed the nature and evolution of Englishness. To understand the duel is to understand much more fully some crucial issues in the cultural and ideological history of Stuart England, and Markku Peltonen's study will thus engage the attention of a very wide audience of historians and cultural and literary scholars.

Book Shakespeare and the Renaissance Concept of Honor

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Renaissance Concept of Honor written by Curtis Brown Watson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting a background study of honor, the author compares ancient concepts with the sympathetic restatements of them that appeared during the Renaissance. He places Shakespeare's plays in the context of these Renaissance ideas, pointing up the sharp conflict between Christian morality and the revived pagan humanism. He demonstrates by pertinent evidence from the plays that Shakespeare favored humanist values over Christian values. Originally published in 1960.
