Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive account of the historic diplomatic agreement that provided a blueprint for ending the Cold War The Helsinki Final Act was a watershed of the Cold War. Signed by thirty-five European and North American leaders at a summit in Finland in the summer of 1975, the document presented a vision for peace based on common principles and cooperation across the Iron Curtain. The Final Act is the first in-depth history of the diplomatic saga that produced this important agreement. This gripping book explains the Final Act's emergence from the parallel crises of the Soviet bloc and the West during the 1960s and the conflicting strategies that animated the negotiations. Drawing on research in eight countries and multiple languages, The Final Act shows how Helsinki provided a blueprint for ending the Cold War and building a new international order.

This book was released on 1994-02-03 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book describe the situation of the elderly today, taking into account the major political, economic, and social variations of service provided in a variety of countries. Although the welfare state exists in all developed and developing countries, its content and administration varies substantially. The editors first develop a framework of concepts and perspectives that establish links between eldercare, distributive justice, and the welfare state. This is followed by analyses of the services provided to the elderly in selected countries. Finally, the editors show how and in what ways the concepts developed earlier in the introduction—equity, uniformity, public accountability, individualism, collectivism, institutional or residual welfare state orientation, "high" or "low" wage economy—apply to and explain the differences in care of the elderly.

Download or read book Soviet Military Doctrine written by Harriet Fast Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to document from basic Soviet sources the development of Soviet military doctrine and its impact upon the Soviet Armed Forces. Soviet military doctrine is defined as the military policy of the Communist Party. In one way or another, this policy affects the lives of all of us-as a possible threat to free institutions and political processes as well as to our economic life and well-being. Generally we approach Soviet military policy in terms of military balances and weapons: comparisons in the number of men under arms, the speed of aircraft of the Soviet bloc versus that of NATO aircraft, the number of ballistic missiles and their throw-weights. Studying such balances is of critical importance in defining, to some degree, existing forces. But it is only through a deep and thorough study of the military policy of the Communist Party, which translates directly into military doctrine, that we can obtain the background that might aid in negotiating with the Soviets on arms control matters or in making decisions that will enable those nations outside of the Soviet bloc to deter future Kremlin military moves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cooperative effort by a number of historians and political scientists, this essay collection focuses on the important connection between domestic affairs and foreign relations during the Cold War. The case studies treat phases of both the Soviet and American experiences and involve contributions by two Russian scholars, three Americans, a German, a Swede, and an Israeli. This collection is particularly timely and signficant because of the surprising way the Cold War ended, making clear that domestic developments can overthrow even the most potent foreign policies and undermine longstanding assumptions about the primacy of international factors. A provocative essay collection, this will be of interest to diplomatic historians and Soviet Affairs specialists, scholars, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gorbachev at the Helm (1987) analyses the policy decisions taken at the 27th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in February–March 1986, declared at the time by the Soviet government as a major turning point in Soviet history. It considers the importance of the changes for a number of policy areas, and from a variety of perspectives. The authors examine the degree to which the policy initiatives and associated personnel changes brought about by Gorbachev in certain key areas – domestic politics, general economic policy and administration, agriculture, ideology and foreign policy – constitute substantial innovations.
Download or read book Khrushchev and the Communist World written by F. Fehér and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Khrushchev and the Communist World, first published in 1984, reviews the Khrushchev era, when the legacy of the Stalinist past was partly repudiated and the possibilities of reform within the USSR and the countries of the socialist camp were explored. The lessons derived from this exploration by Bloc leaders and Khrushchev’s successors unhappily led them to conclude that the scope for such reform was extremely limited. Many of Khrushchev’s reforms and reorganisation measures were indeed rescinded, but the notion had been planted that the naked terror of Stalinist rule and direct, centralised command over other socialist states were no longer feasible. This book reviews the evidence for this view both in internal terms and also in foreign affairs.
