This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Political History of the Extraordinary Events Which Led to the Burmese War: Illustrated With a Map of the British Frontier The happy termination of the late disastrous contest with the Burmese Power, although a subject for general congratulation, by no means should be permitted to draw the attention of the public and British legislature from the question of the causes which led to, and the propriety of the commencement of the War. The con clusion by no means supercedes the necessity of a rigid enquiry into the circumstances which led to the sacri fice of so much human life, the desolation of province after province, with all the attendant evils, and the ex penditure of twelve millions of pounds stirling. It must be admitted that it is a subject that demands very grave and serious consideration. N o success which the British arms may have acquired can render it a less important duty which the British nation owe to them selves, as well as mankind at large, to show that the war in its origin was just, and in its commencement proper. Much doubt has existed on these points: it is high time it was removed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Memoir of the Early Operations of the Burmese War

Download or read book Memoir of the Early Operations of the Burmese War written by Henry Lister Maw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-27 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Early Operations of the Burmese War: Addressed to the Editor of the United Service Journal On its publication, remarks were made by various persons, and angry complaints by the navy I, for one, spoke to Colonel Snodgrass on the subject; and his answer was, That his work was a journal of Sir Archibald Campbell's army; that he did not understand naval tactics and that he thought some naval man had better publish an account of their proceedings adding, however, that the naval force employed was comparatively small and, you know that, at one time, you were the only naval officer doing duty at Rangoon. This was all well and true, on the part of the Colonel but, the public having read and approved his work, it was scarcely probable that they would read and approve all, or any, of the nine hundred and ninety-nine accounts that might follow it; and, consequently, the naval man, whoever he might be, that should undertake the task, would have an additional difficulty to overcome to obtain a hearing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How Wars Arise in India: Observations on Mr. Cobden's Pamphlet, Entitled "the Origin of the Burmese War" Those who have watched the origin and progress of these proceedings will be unable to resist a feeling of surprise, almost bordering on indignation, to find a man of Lord Dalhousie's high principle and unimpeached character, held up to the execration of the civilized world as having got up a war with a weaker power from an insatiable love of territorial aggrandisement, and defended it by an immoral publication. When it is borne in mind that the Blue Book affords irrefragable evidence of his extreme reluctance, from first to last, to engage in any war at all, and of his repeated declaration that annexation would be a calamity second only to war itself, Mr. Cobden's assertion will admit of but one explanation, that all his Lordship's pacific professions were the result of hypocrisy, and that the spirit of forbearance which he manifested throughout these transactions was only assumed to conceal his ambition. From any imputation so utterly at variance with his established character, an appeal may be made with perfect confidence to those who have watched his career during the last twelve years, in the discharge of duties of the highest importance and responsibility. Book Our Burmese Wars and Relations with Burma

Download or read book Our Burmese Wars and Relations with Burma written by W. F. B. Laurie and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Burmese Wars and Relations With Burma: Being an Abstract of Military and Political Operations, 1824-25-26, and 1852-53, With Various Local, Statistical, and Commercial Information, and a Summary of Events From 1826 to 1879, Including a Sketch of King Theebau's Priogress It seems almost superfluous to ask the attention of intelligent Britons to a region little known among them, but one, most assuredly, that has "a greater future before it than any country in Asia." Experience, however, has shown the necessity of so doing; for if we do not yet nearly realise the immense interests we possess in our old and "loved India" - the most splendid dominion under the sun - how is it to be expected we should do so in our comparatively new portion of Chin-India? That people often require to be reminded as well as informed, is another reason for the appearance of this volume, the greater portion of which is devoted to the operations of our Burmese Wars, and much of the remainder to the bright and hopeful effect. As regards the Military portion, the object of the present "Abstract" is two-fold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
